Seven Rays Included in Baseball America Top 100 Prospects List

Here are the Rays that managed to crack the Baseball America Top 100 list:

6. Desmond Jennings, OF
34. Wade Davis, RHP
35. Matt Moore, LHP
54. Reid Brignac, SS
67. Tim Beckham, SS
68. Alex Colome, RHP
Considering the Rays had only five prospects in Baseball America's Top 100 list last year (and graduated one of them in David Price) and did not have a high first-round draft pick this past season, I'd say it's pretty impressive that they managed to have so many players make this list.  It speaks to the depth of talent in the Rays' minor league system and the front office's emphasis on player development.

For comparison's sake, here are the 2009 Baseball America rankings for the prospects not named David Price:
28. Tim Beckham
32. Wade Davis
78. Reid Brignac
80. Desmond Jennings
Jennings, Hellickson, and Moore certainly climbed a long way in a year, while Beckham has had the largest tumble.  Davis is about status quo, though, and Brignac improved his ranking with a strong showing in Triple-A last year.

Of course, the big question in my mind is: should Jennings be ranked higher? Here on DRaysBay we heard from Frankie Piliere last month, who ranked Jennings as the number three prospect in all of baseball.  I think that in the end, it doesn't matter if you rank Jennings at two, four, or nine.  Regardless of the exact rank, once you get into the single-digits you're looking at players that have top-tier talent and the potential to become stars.

For the list of the Top 10 Rays prospects according to Baseball America, go here.

If you don’t me asking. I’m 6’1" 175 but it’s not a good 175 at all, I have a really skinny frame, I’ve just been shoveling all sorts of bad-for-me stuff into my mouth these last four years(hooray college). I eventually want to settle in around 180, but a “good” 180. If I do get into really good shape I may try out for the US men’s handball team in a few years(not a joke).

You're gonna have to get a brace or something

I cut my leg open sliding into home in a softball game and was off it for 3 months, it still bothers me a lot of the time because I didn’t do proper rehab at the time and have had to work (failure) at rebuilding the muscles since then. Now it’s affecting my hip which worries me going forward. It sucks, but you’ll have to find a way to build the strength back up.

They think he's an injury risk

Which, well, every pitcher is. Yeah, Hellickson’s missed some time(it’s why I like Davis better than him) but the injuries were never major and his stuff was as good as ever at the end of 2009. I think it’s ridiculous to drop him as far as they did because of perceived injury concerns(and for the record, while he was in the FSL, Kiley McDaniel described his mechanics as relatively clean.

Across all sources (even the rubes on MLBN), the description of Jennings seems to be that of a surefire stud.

He’s only not ranked #1 because his power ceiling isn’t as high as others, like Heyward and Stanton. But, barring injury (of which every player is at risk), nobody seems to think that Desmond Jennings will end up less than a very good player. Call me optimistic, but the Deezy Factor is why I have no issue with letting Carl go.

I disagree

He’s ranked lower because (a) the top 2 are complete studs and should rank higher than Jennings no matter what and (b) injury history (of which his is much more serious than most).

I disagree that

“the only reason he’s not ranked #1 is because his power ceiling isn’t as high as the others.”

I think that even if he did have the same power ceiling, he’d still only be #3. The injury history and the other two’s studliness would prevent him from being higher.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

by Brickhaus on Feb 24, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

So he hits for as much or more in terms of average, is faster, plays better defense, and if he had the same power ceiling, he'd still be behind them?

Jennings is better in terms of average vs. Stanton

I think the problem here is Brick is saying that even if Jennings’ power ceiling was higher, he would be #3 behind Heyward and Strasburg, whereas PlayOnWords thinks that he means he’d be the #3 hitter behind Heyward and Stanton

I would still think Deezy carries a higher injury risk than Heyward

It can happen at any time, but it has happened to him twice. On that note, I can’t wait to watch Stras blow out that elbow.

That and the fact that Heyward's upside is much higher than Deezy's.

You can’t just project injury history on a pitcher without a past of it, though. That’s dumb, and it’s what make sthe PP list almost meaningless.

how does he actually drop? after how he looked last year? he’s got to be one of the top 3-5 pitching prospects in the game after a show like that at the ML level…

by davidsmarch on Feb 23, 2010 6:19 PM EST reply actions

Did anyone see Bekchams best attribute?

Along with the ranking, each player is listed with their best attribute. Jennings was speed, Davis was fastball, Hellickson was command, and so on. For Beckham, his best attribute was POWER….huh? Just a misprint or is BA under the impression that Beckham is a blossoming power hitter?

by BossmanJunior333 on Feb 23, 2010 6:29 PM EST reply actions

Very true

Why wouldnt they just put “bat” like a lot of the other players. Power is very specific and Ive never once heard him profiled as a future power hitter. Sure maybe 20 hr one day, but I dont think he really has the build for real power. Ive always thought of him as a potential Barry Larkin, as Im sure many of you have as well. But considering his defense is suspect right now and he hasnt shown any real speed, maybe they had to pick something. Still think “bat” would have been a better choice. Then again maybe they see something I/we dont.

by BossmanJunior333 on Feb 23, 2010 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

Here is a breakdown of everyone before Beckham

Power: Stanton, Montero, Alvarez, Santana, Carter, Saunders, Norris, Bell, Frazier, Lawrie, Flowers, (Ike) Davis, …Tim Beckham?
Bat: Heyward, Posey, Ackley, Smoak, (Starlin) Castro, Morrison, Wallace, Taylor, Freeman, Chisenhall, (Jason) Castro, Alonso, Green

In addition to power and bat, there were an occasional “arm,” “speed,” and “defense” sprinkled in. It just seems to be an odd group he’s thrown into, with a bunch of budding corner infielders and outfielders who are projected power hitters. Although I would probably switch a couple of those guys.

He definitely fits more in with the Castro's and Alonso

than Ike Davis and Carter.
