Ryan Braun?

Arod? Utley?

I would say one of those three

My choice would be Utley

Second base isn’t exactly deep with super stars

by staplemaniac on Feb 4, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

I mean

He’s value, and I sure hope he repeats last season’s success, but I don’t think he hits as many homers this season. Even counting him, there’s Kinsler and Pedroia, but then who? Cano? Roberts? Phillips? All are good, but hardly super stars. Cano went in the third round in ESPN’s mock draft. Do you want to spend your third round pick on Robinson Cano just because you need a 2b?

by staplemaniac on Feb 4, 2010 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

I mean there are plenty of okay-pretty good fantasy 2B

But at the elite level, it’s basically Utley and then everyone else (unless Zobrist’s wOBA is .408 again this season, which it probably won’t be)

by staplemaniac on Feb 4, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

There are different ways

The leagues I’ve played in there are 10 categories, 5 batting and 5 pitching. Each week you face a different opponent in the league. Each day you set your lineup, then whatever your active players do counts for your team. At the end of the week whatever your team did in each of the categories gets added up. You win based on each category, so you can win 6, lose 3 and tie 1 for example each week. At the end of the season all of that gets added up (total wins, losses, and ties) and whoever has the top 4 records or whatever goes to the playoffs.

At least, that’s how it worked in the league I was in.

by staplemaniac on Feb 4, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

Couple of different options. Some are season long (roto) some are more like fantasy football (head to head)

The league is structured as a 5 x5 league, meaning there are 5 stats collected and compared for offense and 5 for defense. For simplicity sake, lets assume you are in a 2 × 2 league where BA and HR are tallied on offense and K’s and ERA is tallied on defense.

You pick your team and start your players like most fantasy leagues. All players play in their respective games and their stats are counted and collected for each week (assuming you are in a head to head, weekly schedule league). Each category (BA, HR, K, ERA) is a separate win/loss component. So if your team hits 10 HR’s that week and your opponents hits 5 HR’s, you win that category. BA and ERA are accumulated for that week only, not cumulative. You can go 4-0, 3-1, 2-2, 1-3, or 0-4 with ties being available also. At the end of the week, lets say you go 3-1. The next week starts, and it starts all over again.

Its similar to fantasy football except instead of all stats being converted to points, most baseball leagues keep the stats separately. In FF, Td’s, yards and fumbles are aggregated, not so in FB.

The best actual baseball team no

but you don’t try and put together the best actual team. You try and put together the best team for whatever that stats that you use to score with.

I think you are looking more for stat-o-matic baseball .

Where they run simulations based on players past performance

Bring Your Z-Game!

by Sveet on Feb 4, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Even though I loathe BA and ERA and such,

it probably wouldn’t be as fun using more predictive stats like wOBA and FIP.

Also, I think there’s something to be said for the predictive vs. descriptive stats. ERA and BA are more descriptive, results-based stats, so that ultimately what you want for a fantasy team.

on Twitter @BradleyWoodrum and @CubsStats23

by BWoodrum on Feb 4, 2010 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

It isn’t a true measure of performance.

by rglass44 on Feb 5, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

huh?

wOBA is a much more descriptive stat than BA. FIP is a more descriptive stat of the pitchers performance. ERA? You may as welld raft a whole MLB team, since that plus variation plus the pitcer will determine ERA. With the first pick in the DRB draft, I select the Yankees offense.

Follow Me on Twitter @FreeZorilla

by FreeZorilla on Feb 5, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe 'descriptive' was the wrong word.

What I’m saying is I like how ERA and BA are such poor predictors of true talent. In turn, my team’s success then comes from my ability to see through a high ERA or BA and know what’s really going on.

on Twitter @BradleyWoodrum and @CubsStats23

by BWoodrum on Feb 5, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

It benefits the wise

If you understand that just because your pitcher has a good ERA doesn’t mean he’s good, then you can trade him to some loser for a guy who’s got like a .100 BABIP with a decent LD percentage.

Signups:

Reply with a +1 if you want to be in a 6*6 league with keepers, prospects, and weekly roster changes. The five categories will be as follows:
Bats- BA, RBI, SB, HR, OPS, R
Arms: ERA, WHIP, W, L, S, K

The amount of keepers and minor leaguers will be decided once we have a number of owners. As will money, draft time, and further tweaking. Don’t not join because you don’t want BA or something like that. Say you’re IN, and then change it from the inside. It WILL NOT be WAR, and it WILL NOT be wOBA/FIP solely. IMO it’s boring to do it that simplistic. I like to build a team where you are required to do a lot of different things. Don’t not join because you’re worried about the minor league aspect. I will put together a spreadsheet prior to that draft that will give everyone more than enough info for more than enough prospects.

I’d like to get at least 12 people, and I’d have no problem with 20. The more the merrier. If you have questions, email me (my email is in my profile) or start a new thread for each question. There are certain things I want to do and certain things I want to shy away from. I’m pretty flexible other than that. If people want to do something different, I’d be glad not to run one and possibley play in it. If I’m going to commish one (which I enjoy doing), I’d rather it be one that I am really enthralled in.

So who’s in?

How long is the season though? Missing a few games here and there isn’t that big of a deal. You just have to be more hesitant to start a player that’s banged up. I’ll consider that, but I think it could hamper roster construction.

Using wins and losses can help deter people from doing this

You might be able to take K’s and wins, but ERA (or whatever) and losses will become inflated. I would recommend capping at something like 8 starts a week, anyway.

Last year, my league had a 200 starts limit.

Most teams, for fear of the limit, didn’t even come close to that number. Still, we could put it at 180 or (if you want super-authentic) 162. Either way, daily rosters is MUCH better. I usually set my rosters a week out, anyway, but being able to go back and adjust for an injury is huge.
