Nyjer Morgan's Defense
I was lucky enough to contribute to ESPN's Hot Stove U series. The piece is about -- what else -- a talented centerfielder's defense.
Many thanks to Dave Cameron and the ESPN folk for the opportunity.

I blame myself.

That would be my fault for not providing a bio line.

I think a book about a semi-famous blogger will be big money.

Nyjer Morgan's glove of choice? Isotoners.
I’m killing that line this year.

FREE SPEACH is a myth. There is no such thing as 100% free speech. You cannot go into a movie theater and say "FIRE"!…"What? I have freedom of speach!" Bull. Doesnt work that way. Any real lawyer will tell you that.
Mets claimed Jason Pridie,
when will this trade stop being laughable?

Hey RJ, I might be reading this wrong
But are you really arguing that Nyger Morgan is a better defender than Guttierez based off of 781 innings of UZR?
The editors wanted the "For Morgan" argument.
The sample sizes for both are too small to say at any degree of certainty. I don’t think you can go wrong with either of them moving forward though. Just not at these extremes.
by R.J. Anderson on Feb 9, 2010 9:30 PM EST up reply actions
I just hope that 20,000 ESPN readers don't go home thinking you can evaluate feilders with less than a seasons worth of UZR data
I included a paragraph about sample size.
It doesn’t appear to have made the edit.
by R.J. Anderson on Feb 9, 2010 9:46 PM EST up reply actions
Also, they're going to think that anyways.
Even people who read FG daily think you can use one season of data and make accurate assertions.

R.J. ANDERSON DOES NOT BELIEVE SAMPLE SIZE MATTERS. I DIDN'T SEE A PARAGRAPH ON IT

I suppose this is a telling lesson to cut the mainstream guys some slack
Ultimately its the editor who frames their arguments. Price you pay for selling out.

Well, I mean, that's an editors job.
Hopefully one day R.J. gets to have his very own chat and we can bombard him with asinine questions.
Meh
You are right, but it must be painful to have your thoughts and evidence beyond spelling and grammatical errors altered. Suggestions are one thing, blind rewriting seems odd. After all its the author’s name on the piece and whose reputation is at stake. Note to Trance L: FreeZo is out of the hire an editor camp.

Word.
They probably just looked at the sample size caveat, recognized it as extraneous material, and cut it without asking because he’s R.J. Anderson, sweetheart college student and part-time blogger. Little do they realize the Douchebag Dictator they have enraged.
