Fantasy Update time!

OK so it's looking like we have a 24 person league. I sent out a paypal request to everyone for the league fees. 2 people have yet to sign up, and so we are looking for 2 people. If you want to join, then give me your email address.

In this fanshot I'd like to hit on a few items. Below I'm going to start subthreads for different items we all need to discuss. I think this is the best forum to do it rather than the league message-board.

A cool aspect of the cbssports.com's Commisioner Leagues is that there is a viewable link for people not in the league, but are interested to see how they're fellow DRBers are doing, to follow along. Here it is:

http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/league-view/baseball/drb10/standings

Remember if you are interested in other leagues you can get them for half price by following this link:

Discuss scoring options here:

We’re doing head to head, so we need to pick the scoring categories.

I like 6×6 with the normal 5×5 and thow in losses and OPS.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 11:57 AM EST reply actions

how's about:

5×5 and replace avg with obp or ops and keep pitching the same. not a big deal tho, whatever works for you.

by CBJones on Mar 12, 2010 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

That was another one I thought of.

I’m fine with either. I kind of like the 5×5 plus 1, but am not married to it.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

i just hate avg

with a deep passion. i generally play w/ obp, but even i realize that’s half assing it when i could be using ops…

by CBJones on Mar 12, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

they have HRs to gauge power

and use OBP to utilize guys who can get on base

This

I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

by Steve Slowinski on Mar 12, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

one thing we should state is how the scoring will work

I’ve played leagues that just give a win for winning the most categories which leads to a ton of ties and generally reward teams that can consistently win 6 cats. I prefer assigning wins based on cats won. For instance, if you win 6 your record would be 6-4 instead of 1-0.

I normally do leagues this way

But using OBP, since if you use OPS I feel like it gives an undo advantage to power hitters.

I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

by Steve Slowinski on Mar 12, 2010 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

I prefer 5x5

with OBP instead of AVG

by Sveet on Mar 12, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

i still like 6

if you guys don’t like average, use 2B or a defensive metric… i like the use of holds, making the pitching cat 6… that way closers aren’t the only relivers with ‘value’

by daveh33 on Mar 12, 2010 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

RPs that perform well will have value.

I hate holds though. They’re kind of dumb.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

There might be some teams that have no closers at all

Daily or Weekly roster moves?

I prefer daily, as I like to change my starters and bench constantly. I’m a micromanager.

However with daily leagues you really have to make sure you have the proper innings, and at bats limits, as well have well balanced stats. But I think it is more fan from a managerial point of view.

Weekly is fine as long as the stats aren’t terrible.

How many starting and relief spots are you allowed ‘starting’? That is a critical component

I actually prefer leagues far bigger than 5×5.

Most of my leagues are daily so a balance between ratios and counting statistics is of major importance. That isn’t as big of a deal in a weekly league.

My preferance is still more the merrier in a weekly league (but not as much as if it were a daily league). The reason for this is I like ying to my yang. I like negative stats to balance out positive stats. I think things such as Losses are critical as well as caught stealing (or Net steals). You want a league that rewards well balanced teams that just doesn’t throw a bunch of crap at a wall to see what sticks.

If I had to pick off the top of my head assuming only basic statistics are available

Pitchers:
W, L, Saves, Holds, IP, ERA, WHIP, SO

The goal here is to balance between relievers with starters, with quantity with quality.

Hitters:
Net Steals, OPS, Runs, Hits, K’s, RBIs, HRs, (something defensive?)

Depending on the format of the league I’d change that around.

5×5 or 6×6 is sufficient for a weekly league, but I do think it overemphasizes some things while ignoring others.

Go Gators!!

by matthan on Mar 12, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

i don't want to play if its weekly

all you have to do is set IP caps , etc …. there won’t be much of that anyway with 24 teams in the league… who’s gonna want to trot out their 6th starters, who will probably suck? . there is no good argument for weekly.

by daveh33 on Mar 13, 2010 2:33 AM EST up reply actions

I actually like the points options that are defaulted

But, I’ll do whatever…related to comments below…

Holds are dumb – no way.
You already have HR, don’t need OPS instead of OBP
Net steals are better than just steals

Discuss draft possibilities here:

I think the best way is to do it out of the application because it will be hard to coordinate everyone’s schedules.

We could set up a google.doc with all the players and their cbs ranking. Then leave it open and everyone use it.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 11:59 AM EST reply actions

No we'd do it in a DRB fanshot I think.

That way we’d have a good archive, and our fellow readers can mock us for ages.

But looking at it you can do an extended draft with longer periods between as previously mentioned.

This tool really is pretty impressive.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

that's what she said...

sorry had to be done…
either way on the draft, only thing i cant do is the day it’s actually set now

by CBJones on Mar 12, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I agree it should be all the same.

If I value a minor leaguer over a major leaguer i’d want the chance to draft him first. This is vital in a keeper league

Go Gators!!

by matthan on Mar 13, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

i think the point is:

you CAN draft a minor leaguer in the major league draft if you want. you just have to use a major leafue roster spot to keep him. the minor league dreaft is for longer term guys (think tim beckham) who wont make it up at al this year, and most likely next year. we have a MiLB roster of 5 in my other league and i think it’s worked great, it’s made everyone in that league learn a bit more about the process.

by CBJones on Mar 13, 2010 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

Once you call them up they can’t be kept on the farm.

by rglass44 on Mar 13, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Why not just that extended draft feature?

Why not just that extended draft feature?
If we’re doing a fanshot, aren’t we going to have to manage:
- the available player list (which after round 10 is going to be a nightmare)
- if one person is out for some reason, we’re all stuck indefinitely
- our own rosters (which shouldn’t be all that hard, but is easier if the player shows up on your team after you draft him)

Just do the longer draft feature on the site, everyone gets an hour during the day to draft, and set the timeframe longer at night. If you’re out for some reason, auto-pick will pick someone for you. We can all queue up 2 or 3 players from an auto-pick process, because that’s all we’ll need with how many teams we’re talking.

by TallMatt on Mar 13, 2010 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

Use this area to discuss position/roster issues:

I’m thinking the following

1 C
1 1B
1 2B
1 3B
1 SS
1 LF
1 CF
1 RF
1 UTIL

3 SP
3 RP
3 P

But I wouldn’t be against adding more positions (starters). If we did that (18 starters), I’d say 6 bench spots would suffice (24 roster spots).

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 12:02 PM EST reply actions

hitters are solid

thouhgts about 2 SP, 2RP, 3P ? and six bench? 24 teams, the talent pool will be hard pressed to support that… i think. though, the biggest league ive played in has been 16 teams

by CBJones on Mar 12, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

if you use holds as a cat

then i would understand the larger pitching roster

by CBJones on Mar 12, 2010 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

How 'bout just 8-9 Pitchers?

Do you have to differentiate between SP and RP on CBS. Doing so eliminates the possible strategy of punting saves. Or is that your intention?

by ShawnTSA on Mar 12, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

You don't have to, but I prefer it.

You can still punt saves by targeting the high-K, lowERA types that have value but don’t provide saves as opposed to the poor closers who get saves but also losses and hurt ERA and Ks.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

hmmmmmmmm

It looks like you can do SP/RP or P, but not both. Let me look into this further.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Do you have to play a full roster?

With typical 5×5 in weekly leagues that don’t have minimums or force you to throw starters you can just toss a few great relievers and win 3 categories every time.

Go Gators!!

by matthan on Mar 12, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

I dont think that's an option.

I do prefer COF/CF as well, but I didn’t see it at first glance.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

I prefer 3 OF slots over LF,CF,RF

im for general OF too

It can be tough with specific positions especially wit this many teams. Some people might not even be able to get starters at CF or RF

That's true.

I hadn’t thought about the fact that we have 24 teams.

Yes 24 is a lot of teams

Discuss keeper items here:

My thoughts:

Each draft spot is given a dollar value. Each player you draft is then assigned a dollar amount. You get a set number of 4, 3, 2 year contracts with everyone else recieving one year deals. You can “franchise” one FA at the end of the year for a set price. From there FAs are bid on in the offseason. When you bring up a minor leaguer they come up on a rookie deal and get paid the rookie min. for the first year then they escalate by a set amount.

That’s just a skeleton version of the rules, but I think it’s a good launching point. Thoughts?

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Could you clairify a bit more?

Players are assigned dollar amounts, so that means we have a ‘keeper budget?’ we have a set number of milti-year contracts and the rest are one year deals. basically, each team can keep different numbers of players depending on their budget? You use your remaining budget in the off season to pick up any FAs (in a blind auction?) to fill out your keepers. Then you draft in year two like a normal draft again? Each pick having the same value as the year before? Some teams finishing in round 14 and some in 18? (just an example) is this kind of right?

by CBJones on Mar 12, 2010 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

I'll play if you still need someone

I’m already going to win 5 leagues, might as well make it 6

matthanuf06@gmail.com

As long as there isn’t a crazy draft time (the fanshot idea is good), and the fees aren’t crazy I should be good to go. I’m already in a CBS league where the commish said the keeper league (also minors, college, etc) will take over 12 hours. I can’t dedicate that much time in one sitting so the fanshot idea would really work for me. Either way let me know.

I think I'll draw up a manifesto while cheering against the Blue Devils tomorrow.

Then we can decide what to keep and what to strike. Maybe setup polls to figure stuff out.

We need to get this puppy off the ground

The draft itself is going to be very time-consuming and ,thankfully, the season is fast approaching.
