OTTOTD: The Voodoo 5

Did you know that someone finally got around to making a USF blog for SBN?  It's called Voodoo 5.  I happen to think it's an awful name but these guys do a good job of explaining exactly why it's called the Voodoo 5 here, and well, someone's got to take up responsibility for building some kind of fan history with the program, no reason it can't be these guys.  Quickly scanning some of their posts, I know I'm going to appreciate their insight and sense of humor, so this'll be nice.

Did the Big East destroy your brackets yet?  I managed to escape with five losses yesterday in the 16 games with 3 of them coming from the Big East upsets (the other two were both SEC teams, UF and Vandy).  I feel some comfort in knowing that I only had Georgetown going past the 2nd round, but Nova's going to ruin me when they lose against St. Mary's since I had them reaching the Elite Eight.  As for today, I have WV, Pittsburgh and of course Syracuse winning but Louisville losing.

If you're a large media conglomerate like Viacom who attempts to protect it's intellectual properties whenever they're posted to youtube, how do you handle your video clips on the internet?  Do you A) sign a licencing deal to authorize your videos to be posted there in return for money B) pull all your videos off the site and create your own streaming video network or C) hire marketing firms to post your clips then sue Youtube for not pulling them down?

I have all the Big Least teams winning today

they will most likely destroy me.

Georgetown was so up and down all year, they could beat anybody one game and lose to anyone the next

I will agree that the Big East is having kind of a down year, but we knew that when UCONN didn’t make the tourney and no one outside of Cuse and WV played consistent ball in the BE. I have six losses so far, but fortunately didn’t have any of those teams moving on in the second game. My bracket is still looking strong, provided, nothing really crazy happens today.

My fantasy league is doing our first $50 payout based on who can get the most points in ESPN's tourney challenge

We’ve got one kid that only missed on the Marquette game so far, but he had them going to the Elite 8, he’s sitting pretty right now in the 96th percentile, but shouldn’t be for long.

I've got them winning a couple of games

They’ve got a banging coach and can play inside and out. They pressure the ball all over the floor and can play zone or M2M. They’re not a bad team they just need big games from Samkon (sp?) and a guard to go off.

Not from you.

The talking head idiots everywhere. They’re actually the third best basketball conference this year top to bottom.

by rglass44 on Mar 20, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

In a down year they are probably number 2

The problem is that most of those guys just look at last year and project that forward. Last year the BE was clearly the most dominant conference in the country. Unfortunately, said talking head idiots didn’t realize this until the sweet sixteen. This year they spend all year talking about how good it is and it’s really a down year. I wish those guys would watch more sports and spend less time thinking of different ways to say Boo-yah.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 20, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

The problem with the BE is the dead weight drags the conference down.

Even in a really down year the ACC still rates as the best conference b/c even the Miamis and NCSUs are competetive…

by rglass44 on Mar 20, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah ND had no business there, G-town shouldn't have been a 3, I was high on UL, but they beat my boys twice and looked good doing it

Marquette was high, even with all the mediocrity, WVU and SU have really separated themselves and Pitt aren’t any slouches either. I hesitate to name a conference that can boast a top-3 like that.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 20, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Big 12 has KU, KSU, and Baylor...

I like that top 3.

The problem with comparing like that anyway is the BE has 16 teams, so of course they’ll have better top end talent. The issue is they have some absolutely awful teams that you can chalk up as Ws.

Kenpom has it ACC, B12, and then BE. There’s a sizeable dropoff from B12 to BE too.

90% of BE can’t come here, 90% of DRB can’t go to BE, so if everyone circumvents their banning (whether real or imagined) and congregates at a third party, it will not only destory the third party, but end up in a big slap fight.

Also per wiki:

On June 4, 2008, the Associated Press reported that Ronnie Craven of Somerville, Massachusetts, had been posing as Turner and using the identity to facilitate sexual encounters with women he met in online chat rooms. His ruse also included the additional falsehood that “Jeff Turner” was employed in the front office of the Seattle SuperSonics (Turner has never worked for the Sonics). Craven says he has received a cease-and-desist order from a lawyer for the Sonics. Craven said he was embarrassed and would stop lying about his identity.2

There comes a time
When we head a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it’s time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can’t go on
Pretneding day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of
God’s great big family
And the truth, you know love is all we need

[Chorus]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let’s start giving
There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day
Just you and me

Send them your heart
So they’ll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

[Chorus]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let’s start giving
There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day
Just you and me

When you’re down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There’s no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well, let us realize
That a change will only come
When we stand together as one

[Chorus]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let’s start giving
There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day
Just you and me

It's another inside joke.

Dick Vitale has called the men’s basketball position at USF “the toughest coaching job in America” because it’s a football school in a relatively talent-poor state in a top-flight basketball league. Hard to maintain success. But if Miami used to do it, then hopefully we can too.

They broke my heart. Apologies in advance for rooting against 'Cuse. I rooted against Kansas and Duke too though.
NOT COMPLETELY CRAZY
No. 1 Syracuse (32.9) vs. No. 16 Vermont (22.9)
UPSET CHANCE: 7.5 percent

Orange fans have been telling themselves all season that this year would be different. Syracuse, which is first in the NCAA in 2-point FG shooting (57.2 percent), third in blocks (17.9 percent of opponent shots) and fourth in steals (14 percent of opponent possessions) can beat you any way it likes, and surely won’t be prone to an early-round exit. But a first-round matchup against Vermont should make Cuse a tad queasy, and not just because ofArinze Onuaku’s injury. These Catamounts aren’t as good as the Taylor Coppenrath-led crew that slayed Syracuse five years ago, but they do clamp down on opponents’ shooting inside (43.2 percent, 19th in the NCAA) and outside (31.5 percent on 3-pointers, 56th). And Syracuse has discernible ball-control weaknesses: The Orange turn the ball over on an ugly 21.2 percent of possessions (210th in the NCAA), and their 2-3 zone allows opponents to grab offensive rebounds on 35.2 percent of shots (282nd). The Orange also rely on free throws for more than 30 percent of their scoring margin. It hasn’t happened often, and it probably won’t happen this early, but if Syracuse goes cold for an extended stretch, those are the kinds of stats that create upsets, and maybe even the first 16-seed over a top seed. We wouldn’t advise actually making this pick, but if our model had a forehead, it would be sweating with anticipation just a bit.

by R.J. Anderson on Mar 19, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

No worries, Rinze's injury does concern me (moreso going forward) as he's one of the bigger reasons for those numbers

That said, Rick Jackson is probably the better of the two. When both are clicking we might be the only team that can match up well with a guy like Aldrich, who is an absolute beast on his own.

The only thing I’ll add is that you will absolutely punish the living hell out of your toilet later that day. But it’s well worth it.
