Dioner Navarro Carted Off Field With Left Leg Injury
Well, this isn't good news.
According to Marc Topkin's twitter it appears like Dioner Navarro suffered a serious leg injury after a collision at home plate with Jacque Jones of the Twins.
#Rays Navarro taken off field on cart, injury to left leg appears very serious based on how much pain he appeared to be in
John Jaso and Jose Lobaton better get ready for some more action this spring.
We'll post more updates when they become available.
Update: Navarro only has a bruised nerve in his leg and should not miss Opening Day according to Andrew Friedman.
Quote from Friedman on the injury via @TBO_Rays:
"It should not interfere with opening day."

Time to make that trade for Mauer
WTF is Jacque Jones doing on a baseball field?

uh oh
as much as I dislike Navi as a baseball player… Jaso and Lobaton are not MLB ready. If this ends up being pretty serious I wonder if there is anyone out there we can trade for (say Pudge in Washington)
Pudge makes no sense.
Besides the horrible contract, he bats righty. We have Shoppach.

Ramon Hernandez for the billionth time

Figured Josh Bard would come up.
I don’t think he’s much better than Loba/Jaso though.

Without Navi, Shoppach becomes the unquestioned everyday catcher
Lobaton or Jaso will assume the Michel Hernandez Sunday catching role.

Navi on his way for x-ray
Maddon said he was caught on the shin guard , so fingers crossed he will be ok .
Flip a coin.
Neither will be 2008 Navarro, just hope that Shoppach + whomever is better than 2009 Navarro.

I think Casey Fossum standing in front of the plate with his eyes closed is better than 2009 Navi.
Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. I'm on a horse.
I'mma miss that lovable oaf.
Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. I'm on a horse.
And that he was due
for some regression, about halfway between 2008 and 2009. Can’t believe Nevin Ashley’s name hasn’t been ejaculated all over this forum yet.
Nope, Jaso/Lobes would be the right play if Navi's injury was legit
Thats what I wanted rather than resigning Navi

Well, fuck. This sucks.
Never want to see this happen. At least we have Shoppach.

I think a broken leg is 4-6 months
Sign lady must die.

Pretty sure, all depends on which, but bones recover easier/quicker than ligaments
IIRC when I tore mine in my ankle they said if I had broken it it wouldn’t have been so bad. Probably has to do with lack of surgery.
From Yer Scurvy Dog SRQman
There was no gravy found around home plate...
So I’m guessing no on the broken leg.
Could have been a closed fracture
My guess is a bad deep shin bruise, it’s gonna hurt for awhile, but should be good by May

This really sucks I hope he’s not seriously injured. He was batting .467 in the spring too

The one area we have no depth
If he’s out a while, AF will have to get busy
Looks like Navi will just miss a few days. Alvin Colina's time to shine

Yes, we can now disregard those above posts saying his leg might be amputated
btw—what did JP say to the media?
He's bummed, man, and he's not throwing for a few weeks, man, but it's not serious, just some inflammation, man, and he'll be back by May.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 20, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Really? May?
Shit, I was hoping he’d only be out for a week or 2.
He's not throwing for a week or two.
And by then he’ll need some innings in XST/minor league games.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 20, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Now I am confused....
Is it inflammation or weakness? Maddon sounded critical of JP, which would lead me to think it is a weakness caused from not coming to camp prepared.
.
SPTimesRays #Rays Howell said MRI showed “quite a bit of inflammation” in back of shoulder, but he feared worse.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 20, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I used to see one of the top trainers in the country....
One time my arm was very sore, and he tested it out, and found a weakness in one particular area. He gave me three or four exercises to strengthen the weak area.
Inflammation? This seems to confirm out "it's not a conditioning problem" theory.
from Cubs Stats and Twitter @BradleyWoodrum
Perhaps he came into camp and was overthrowing right off the jump, irritating a pre-existing stinger

Complete speculation on my part, but I know I was always amped to throw hard as soon as I could

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...
But it still could have been from coming to camp out of shape(shoulder muscle-wise) and then it got inflamed once he started throwing.
Absolutely

It could be worse

We could be paying him 10.5M and he could be out twice as long.

if Navi's injury won't interfere with Opening Day (according to Friedman)
does that mean that Shoppach was going to be our starter anyway?
Regressing to the mean streets of St. Pete
Whew
Good news. With the exception of Shoppach, we have no other MLB-ready catchers.
