3/5/10 Spring GDT: Tampa Bay Rays @ New York Yankees

Oh look, another American League East game! Joe Girardi is afraid of Elliot Johnson

When: 1:05 pm

Where: Legends Field Steinbrenner Field, Tampa, Fla

TV/Radio/Web: MLBNetwork, Raysbaseball.com

Probable Rays pitchers: LH David Price, RH, Heath Rollins, RH, Mike Ekstrom, RH, Jeff Bennett, RH Jeremy Hellickson, LH Carlos Hernandez, LH R.J. Swindle

Probable Yankees pitchers: RH Phil Hughes, RH Joba Chamberlain, RH David Robertson, LH Jeremy Bleich, RH Grant Duff, RH Dustin Moseley, RH Hector Noesi, RH Kevin Whelan

If only R.J. was around to see...R.J. My spring fling from last season, Carlos Hernandez, returns to pitch along side David Price and Jeremy Hellickson.

Also, if you enjoyed the DRB annual, you need to check out the Amazin Avenue annual. You don't have to be a Mets fan to enjoy the quality of work put in to it.

I’m not from the city or Long Island. I’m an “upstater” that lives in a city called Utica, which is half hour from Syracuse. And i hate the Yankees? so why hate on me?

decent line-up for a road game

Puffy Rod gets to show off another position today as he tries to continue to impress.

Jason Bartlett SS
Sean Rodriguez LF
Evan Longoria 3B
Ben Zobrist 2B
B.J. Upton CF
Dioner Navarro C
Dan Johnson DH
Justin Ruggiano RF
Chris Richard 1B
David Price P

I know that it's ST, but it's hard to find a spot for Beej in this lineup, my ideal might be

Bartlett SS
Zobrist 2B
Longoria 3B
Pena 1B
Crawford LF
Sean Rod DH
Joyce RF
Fat Catcher C
Upton CF

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

I actually still like the idea of BJ leading off in front of CC, even though he struggled last year

Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Zobrist 2B
Pena 1B
Rodriguez DH
Joyce RF
Fat Catcher C
Bartlett SS.

by Dbullsfan on Mar 5, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

If Craw is legitmately learning some plate discipline then he can stay at the top.

I’d rather have his bat in the middle of the lineup where we can hide his OBP a bit, and those extra base hits can drive in runners. Also, he’s a sure bet to stay out of the double play, and can help our bottom of the order hitters get better pitches as he toys with a pitcher’s mind on 1B. I know he would make a fuss about it, but if he’s gone at the end of the year, it’s time to stop acquiescing to his demands and put him in the best position to help the team. He can’t afford to pout and have a shitty season as his next paycheck depends on his performance this year.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

The casual fan will make a fuss about it too

I really like the idea of Zobrist hitting in front of Longo and Pena either at 2 or 3. He is an OBP machine

by Sveet on Mar 5, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

that may be something we just have to deal with from him

as long as he is putting up mvp numbers besides that i think it is okay though

by Dbullsfan on Mar 5, 2010 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

From Baseball Between the Numbers
Furthermore, the correlation of a player’s DP percentage (the number of times he grounds into a double play per opportunity) from year to year is extremely low, indicating that much of a player’s skill at avoiding the double play is luck.

He had a lot of them last year, but how many times do you remember seeing him rip a hard grounder-low line drive to the left side of the infield that a guy made a play on. He hits it so hard that he doesn’t give himself much of a chance to be safe at first. I’ll take the hard contact over dribblers that give him time to leg it out.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 5, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

I don't mind that too much

I’m not sure I like the idea of JB leading off though. I just have a feeling his offense is going to be no where near what it was last year and that BJ is going to be much improved. I also wouldn’t mind Zobrist leading off.

by Dbullsfan on Mar 5, 2010 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Zobrist would be my choice for lead off.

I think that if out of Burrell, Rodriguez, Upton, Joyce

we cand find a good run production from the #5, 6. and 7 spots than going with Zo at lead-off works perfect.

Zo
CC
Longo
Pena
PTB
SRod/Joyce
Upton
Catcher
Bartlett

That being said Zo was near 100 RBI last year and that will be missed if he can’t be replaced inthe middle of the order.

I hope we can make Kapler into a 3B coach or something and give his spot to someone more deserving

All 3 would be good options. I hope Mad Dog isn't as stubborn as he was last year with the leadoff spot

Ideally, Upton is perfect for the spot, but he wasn’t hitting and a Plan B should have been used. I would start with Bartlett expecting regression, let Beej get some low pressure ABs from the bottom of the order and get his confidence up and then figure it out from there. Zips has the two with similar OBP and SLG, but Beej with a much lower average, meaning, he walks a bunch more than Bartlett. It’s a nice problem to have.

Crawford's an interesting one

His O-Swing% stayed the same (a high 30.9%) and his contact rates in and out of the zone both increased. He swung at fewer pitches in the zone. With his contact rate and speed, he can afford to work deep in the count to draw to draw more walks. I don’t think he actually had a better eye last year. This gives me a good idea for a post.

Kay said that the Rays never pitched to Teixeira

in that last series last year-to keep him from passing Pena. I was at the Sabathia game (that was fun) and do not remember that so I checked the play by plays. It does not seem to me to be true.

In game one, Price did hit Teixeira the first time up but then got him on a ground out to the pitcher after which Girardi took Teixeira out of the game. He was 0-1 with a HBP.

In game two, Teixeira hit a deep fly to CF for an out off Niemann, then grounded out to 2B. His third AB produced an RBI line drive to CF/RF after which he was taken out again. He was 1-3

In game three, Teixeira again hit a deep fly out his first time, off Davis this time. His next AB was a strike out. In the Yankee 10 run inning, he walked twice, the first time off Davis and the second, after most of the runs had scored, intentionally off Sonnanstine. In that game he was 0-2 with 2 BBs and 1 K.

It does not appear to me that the Rays did not pitch to him. Maybe they did try to keep the ball away, not a bad tactic in any case, and perhaps the HBP was a message, but he hit two deep flies, a line drive and 2 grounders, and was only walked intentionally once.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 5, 2010 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

Quite possibly

Niemann is almost as tall as me while kneeling. 2 feet of height difference.

Pat Burrell was the most intimidating in terms of body size, last year. Less so now.

It was definitely muscle

First time I had the “this guy could break me in half if he wanted” reaction to standing next to a ballplayer.

by sstamour on Mar 5, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Do you think he was too big? I know he's always been a big guy (insert buttsecks pic)

Interesting that he’s smaller this year, maybe he wants to be more flexible or he’s just losing mass.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 5, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

It's not so much losing it

It’s…distributed differently, if that makes sense. He looks much more proportioned, more flexible, more graceful. I don’t know how it will translate into baseball skills – he’s still a big guy. But I was impressed with the work he must have put into it over the off season.

Yeah, he worked out at API

Essentially bootcamp for baseball players. His work ethic has never really been in question (at least for me), but the type of work seems to have changed, and for the better. Coming in healthy, good attitude, and in great shape…I have high hopes.

by sstamour on Mar 5, 2010 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

He’s lost some of the cockiness too. He’s still Pat Burrell, but seems to have really woken up over the off season. Who knows what it will lead to, but I’d rather have the spring start off this way than with him doing the same things as last year.

When it comes to Eric Berry, Tennessee fans have seen and heard it all. He's known as "The Fifth Dimension". "Two-thirds of the planet is covered by water; the rest is covered by Eric Berry." The Tennessee "Minister of Defense". Besides Chuck Norris, who is the only guy to crash into Tim Tebow head-to-head and live to tell about it? Eric Berry.

As a relatively casual fan

I am torn. I like Joyce, I like Rodriguez, and obviously you’ve gotta love Zorilla. Heck, I like Brignac, too.

Ya know what, this is a good problem to have. For Magic fans, this is Rashard Lewis/Ryan Anderson/Brandon Bass.

Just got back from the game....

Thoughts:

1Bartlett’s swing looks great
2)Sean the Baptist has some great pop
30Hellickson’s fastball gets on hitters quick
4)Upton looked like he was swinging harder then last seasonhealthy shoulder)

by td32 on Mar 5, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

so no matters what happens results wise the rest of this game

The 2B/RF battle is going to be a fun one to watch. Brignac, Rodriguez, and Joyce all seem to be bringing it this spring. With the flexability of Brignac, Rodriguez, and Zobrist, if a SS goes down somewhere does AF try to pull a move for Bartlett and let either Briggy or Rodriguez start the year at SS.

oh and Hellickson looked sick after the AB to Cervelli.
