Per Topkin
UPDATE, 11:01: Pat Burrell will play RF in Clearwater on Sunday and has talked to the Rays about getting to do so more often. Maddon said they’d try it more during the spring but was noncommital about doing so during the season.

if Burrell proves he could play RF (even if only in emergency)
it moves Kapler one step closer to the door, if Rodriguez keeps hitting. No need for 4 RH’s who can play RF. (Zo, Rodriguez, Burrell, Kap) and Jennings and Ruggiano in AAA if we get plagued with injuries and get desperate.
No way in hell we let Burrell play in RF
He just wants to not be seen as a pure DH type after what happened to Vlad, Thome, Damon etc. in FA this year.
by benderbrodriguez on Mar 6, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions
Heard the same thing last year. Burrell should never see the outfield in a game that counts
Too many options ahead of him. If he wants to play in the spring, go ahead.

I'm still not sure there is a spot for Kapler if Rodriguez wins a starting job
and proves he can play OF.
Rays aren't throwing a millon dollars away.
Plus there’s no reason to get rid of Kapler. He’s a + defender in the corners and he’s decent in center on a limited. He also mashes LHP and will probably be better against RHP although he doesn’t need to play against them. Rodriguez making the team has no effect on him.
The battle is Rodriguez vs Brignac for the backup middle IF job. The Rays aren’t going to waste Brignacs service clock to be a backup all year. Rodriguez mashing in spring just makes the move an easier sell. Bench will be catcher, kapler, rodriguez and aybar (if healthy). If not Dan Johnson.

There really isn't a battle barring injury.
Rodriguez is doing well, but he could hit .100 all spring and still make the team as it is currently constructed.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 6, 2010 12:58 PM EST up reply actions
financially it makes sense to keep him (unless we can trade him)
I don’t see him hitting much better against LHP than Rodriguez, who is younger with a higher upside and provides more flexibility. I like this even more if they plan on bringing in Blalock or Johnson for the bench. I agree that Brignac should be in aaa unless he is at least playing everyday against RHP.
Kapler had a .931 OPS versus lefties last year.
1.001 in 2008 and he didn’t play in 2007.
Even when you regress that, it’s still damn good.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 6, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions
Brignac also has more development left, especially with his terrible plate discipline and relatively young age. I feel like S-Rod is already ready.

not that one batter effects this but
if Sonny is in the rotation and it isn’t the result of 2 or more injuries I’d be dissapointed. The 5 in the rotation plus Hellickson should all be above him “in line” so to speak.
Once Hellickson is up
He’s up for good. Will NOT be first in line in case of injury (or rainout, doubleheader, etc.)
Why not?
If he’s on normal rest, I wouldn’t see a compelling case against him

If it's a doubleheader or 15 day DL type of thing then Sonnanstine will probably fill in
But otherwise, I don’t see management making sonnanstine making 10+ starts in case of 60 day DL or worse.

I do too
that doesn’t mean you can’t be critical of his play behind the plate
From Yer Scurvy Dog SRQman
Honestly
I haven’t seen him behind the plate much in the past year and a half. Yesterday he made some nice blocks, but really hard to judge catcher defense on the basis of a few innings.
I've seen him a couple times
It was pretty bad. But overall what we have heard is that he isn’t solid behind the plate, not like Navi was at times last year though.
From Yer Scurvy Dog SRQman
Last year.
I hope he has because catcher is a huge question mark in the future
From Yer Scurvy Dog SRQman
Without seeing a whole lot of him I wouldn't want to make that judgment
Sounds like his blocking could use work. He’s only thrown out 21% of baserunners in his minor league career. Navi is at 30% in the Majors and was 34% in the minors.
