Balfour, Benoit, Wheeler, and Lance should be interesting today.

The lineup is less than inspiring:

Kapler, cf
Rodriguez, 2b
Pena, 1b
Burrell, rf
Joyce, lf
Shoppach, dh
Navarro, c
E. Johnson, 3b
Brignac, ss
Shields, p

This looks like the Strongsville lineup until we get to Navi. Phils are playing a lot of their regulars, but Francisco probably wishes he could have seen Sonny yesterday.

Rollins, ss
Polanco, 3b
Utley, 2b
Howard, 1b
Ibanez, lf
Francisco, cf
Brown, rf
Gload, dh
Schneider, c
Happ, p

Interesting argument

Some valid points, but I’d like to see a bit discussing his merits versus, say, Randy Choate (and JP Howell, if you’re looking for a lefty that can do a full inning+). Not sure we need a second lefty specialist, JP/Grant/Dan form a pretty nice trio in front of Soriano, and we have Lance and possibly Andy to the extent that we need several innings. Grant has also gone 3 on occasion.

by sstamour on Mar 7, 2010 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

I would take Washburn over Andy and he's better against righties than Choate is

I like Randy, but when you can make an incremental increase in talent I think you should.

Explain.

When it comes to Eric Berry, Tennessee fans have seen and heard it all. He's known as "The Fifth Dimension". "Two-thirds of the planet is covered by water; the rest is covered by Eric Berry." It's worth a rental, and worth a purchase consideration @ $40. Player basepath control is unituitive; that's my major complaint.

I mean, it’s not as good as the show, not even close. But it’s miles ahead of 2k9.

OT: USF bulls keep their tourney hopes alive with a nice win over freefalling UCONN.

I watched a good chunk of the 2nd half of this game and was impressed at how the Bulls took control of UConn early. Also impressed with the bench bringing UConn back to life and how they fought to chip away that big lead.

OT I was thinking of trying to do a fanpost on injured players being the new "moneyball" thingy

Anyone know where a good place to start would be, in terms of finding out which players the Rays have either signed/traded for who were injured just before they came here?

by staplemaniac on Mar 7, 2010 1:20 PM EST reply actions

I was looking at that

but the link is down on the site where they got it from, while they update it.

by staplemaniac on Mar 7, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Well, there's grant Balfour, Soriano, Benoit, Carlos Hernandez and about a gazillion others

If you’re looking for a low-risk, high-reward type guy, someone who was just injured and is gonna make less would be a good buy. For example, I think Sheets is gonna kill some dudes this season out in Oakland (although I definitely think they overpaid)

I just kind of wanted to see if this was just something I am making up, or for real. I was gonna calculate the WAR vs actual salary of players who were injured the season before, or something like that.

by staplemaniac on Mar 7, 2010 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Seems to me

Without knowing the type of injury and the recommendation from the medical staff, you could have an awful lot of noise or draw incorrect conclusions. Interesting topic though.

Yeah, I don't know what they look like.

But they’ve always had potential. His change is really inconsistent but every report I’ve ever read says it sinks and fades, which is very positive. We’ll have to see how the feel for his breaking pitch comes along. He was always hit or miss with that. I’ve seen him live a couple times. Once, he couldn’t throw it for a strike for his life, the second time it was an above-average offering and he was making hitters look silly because his fastball is just off the charts. It may be the best fastball in the organization. The combination of movement and velocity is absolutely sick.

Oh

and to think, I’m still watching hockey.

I can’t be the only one who thinks the Lakers are incredibly overrated this year, correct? Give me Denver in the West, with Dallas in the mix as well.

Washington, Detriot, Chicago and Pittsburgh are the teams they rotate for the Sunday game. Never anyone else. Next weeks game: Washington at Chicago C’MON

I don’t know if NBC has ever shown a regular season Sharks game either. While that team is classic 2nd round fodder, they are perennially among the league’s top regular season teams.

The opinion at the game

was that the fault was Foley’s for not holding him in time.

by bobr on Mar 7, 2010 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

Probably should get used to that

Seeing runners thrown out at the plate, I mean. A lot of people are arguing that 3B coaches are too conservative about sending runners.

Fair enough

But generally, I expect we’ll see more of it.

by sstamour on Mar 7, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Not stupid risks.

Numbers suggest that only sending the runner when they have a 90%+ chance is leaving runs on the table, and that’s what most 3B coaches are doing. Foley was at an 88.9% success rate last year.
