Not bad out of the pen last year

FB (93)/CT/CU pitcher with a <4 FIP last year, 4.18 xFIP, 4.00 tERA, decent amount of K’s, but lots of walks, the typical guy that the Pirates should be paying next to nothing.

Well for a team that hasn't made the playoffs in more than a decade and a half

I would give it another 5 years to make it a nice round number of 2 decades, no playoffs, before they even think about a world series

I think Aki is going to do real well over there, he's the perfect teammate and is slightly above-average,

Playing in the NL could turn him into a >3WAR player, I just wish we had room for what he brings to the table. People can criticize Huntington about making a play for Aki when we could have had him for nothing, but I think it was a very astute move to make sure he grabbed Aki. He’s going to be a great fit over there.

Jesse Chavez

Wasn’t exactly a huge “play” for Aki. Has some upside, sure, but there are a lot of people like him. The Braves desperation led to Aki, and that was just a perfect storm of events that our FO was ready and willing to jump into.

That's not the point, we recouped something when we should have gotten nothing

They gave up essentially nothing when they could have given up nothing, but risked outside interference. It was a smart move on both sides. After reading your correction below me, I agree that Soriano was all on the Braves, and we got him for the right to pay his salary.

I think we can all agree that it would of been better for the rays to trade sonny instead of ejax.

Whether or not the process was correct is debatable, but the result certainly was not good.

by RaysTheRoof on Mar 8, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

I don't agree with that

Sonny had flexibility in that he could go down to the minors and cost nothing. Edwin did not have that and he cost some money, and has gotten even more since then. Edwin was league average last year, Sonny was bad.

I'm happy with joyce too, but id be happier if we would have traded sonny before he became awful

and kept ejax for a year and then traded him this offseason when his value for was apparently quite high.

by RaysTheRoof on Mar 8, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Hindsight is 20/20

We weren’t going to get anything as good as Joyce in return for Sonny. I’m still not confident that Joyce is as good as we could have gotten for Jackson, but whatever. Trading Jackson was the right move.

by Brickhaus on Mar 8, 2010 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not going to fall into the arms of hindsight.

I don’t think anyone saw Sonnanstine falling quite like that. Even at his worst I figured league average. Obviously that was incorrect, but whatever. I can live with what happened and hope something is learned from his failures for a future case.

by R.J. Anderson on Mar 8, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Even if in this scenario we could only trade Sonny for a low level MiLB player?

That means we have no Joyce, we have/had E-Jax and would have traded him this offseason for who knows what. I’ll take Joyce and the “known” (somewhat) return vs the roll of the dice based on hindsight.

I guess I don’t get how you can have BABIP issues if its out of your hands.

Partially

IMO, it looks more like luck on a macro basis, but it’s definitely more luck for some than others.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."

by Brickhaus on Mar 8, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I guess my lack of understanding comes from hearing that pitchers with BABIP issues wont last long

but everyone refers to BABIP as being based on luck.

If you see any player that deviates from this average (.290-.300) to an extreme, start thinking that there might be some luck going on.

So if a pitcher has a BABIP of .380, how do you distinguish if this is due to bad luck or just flat out sucking? I would assume that after 3 yars of a BABIP that high its easier to see. I guess this is where other metrics would probably back up the bad luck versus bad pitching idea.

Hit Buc 'Em for all your Bucs news and DRaysBay for every piece of Rays info.

by Buc Wild on Mar 8, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

BABIP definitely isn't luck at the lowest levels

Low BABIP is definitely a skill in the low minor leagues, especially. I honestly think that it’s just that at a certain point, you’re so close to hitting the line that an incremental increase in skill just doesn’t do much in terms of stats. But if someone was throwing straight 50 MPH fastballs over the plate all the time, he’d have a pretty high BABIP.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."

by Brickhaus on Mar 8, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

BUT

Some guys who don’t have much of a BABIP skill do still make it to the majors because they’re able to make up for it in other regards.

What's the logic behind that?

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 8, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

That's always been the case

But what I’d love to see is BABIP by PitchFX. Hopefully we’ll have that info in 5 – 10 years, at least for the mid and upper minors. Obviously groundballers will do better than fly ball pitchers, but some types of pitches are just easier to hit than others. Yes, some of it would reflect in LD%, but not all of it.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."

by Brickhaus on Mar 8, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Most BABIP theories aren't reliably testable for that reason

Especially when there’s probably more of a correlation in subsets than on an overall level. But start looking at those subsets, and you’ll never get a large enough sample to be reliable.

Isn't the problem that no one with a 0.400 BABIP can last

Funny story:

So I was at the game Saturday, and we were on the berm in LF on the Sawx side. Lars Anderson was stretching out and jogging right in front of us between innings. As he’s stretching out we have the following exchange:

Me: Better stretch that back out good Lars…
He says nothing but gets a big cheesy smile, laughs, and throws a wink my way.
Me: You gonna hit this year?
Lars: I hope…

It was pretty funny, and I think he was a little suprised to have someone recognize him and give him shit about his back and his year last year.

Very late to the party regarding the Pirates future but here goes

They have a crazy amount of hitters

In like 2 years, there team will be

C Tony Sanchez (who lets them trade Doumit for pitching)
1B – Jeff Clement(I think he will finally get a chance and be awesome)
2B Andy LaRoche
SS Chase D’Arnaud
3B Pedro Alvarez
LF Jose Tabata
CF Andrew McCutchen
RF Gorkys Hernendez

Maholm, Duke, Alderson, Lincoln and McCutchen in the rotation. Yeah they are going to be awesome

Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!

Travel tips are nice
6. Do you have any expert travel advice?

GB: Get yourself a good suitcase where all the clothes don’t get squashed to the bottom of the suitcase – one of those ones where you can fold the suits over and the pants. You get some suitcases, where you lift it up, and everything goes right to the bottom, it’s all squashed up. You wind up having all these shirts that you had dry cleaned, ending up having to get dry cleaned again. And there’s nothing worse than having to pull a shirt out, and you’ve got to iron it or have it dry cleaned again because it’s all wrinkled up.

The idea is actually to develop a mosquito strain resistant to malaria

and then have it replace the wild mosquito species that transmits malaria in Africa. Similar in theory to GM corn and stuff, but much more difficult in practice.
