DRB First Annual Fantasy Baseball Keeper League (poll added)

Good evening. I have great news. In our last fantasy discussion I offered two possibilities for the fantasy league I was creating. Well, after Andy's cryptic message, we've followed through and we're getting to use CBSSports.com's great Commisioner League tool for free. I was stoked to find out that SBN and CBSSports.com we're considering a partnership that netted us not only one free league, but any league started through DRB only has to pay half the league fees ($90). As I said in my previous post, this is the best tool I've used for fantasy baseball, and I'm pretty psyched to run a league using them as opposed to just playing in one.

Here are the details of their product (give you an idea of some of the great aspects of this league):

Customize entire league the way you want...rules, scores, teams + more
LIVE scoring & stats so you can follow along as your teams rack up points
Keeper league capability to carry on the tradition for many seasons to come
Expert analysis provides up-to-date information on all players & teams
Live chat/league messenger to trash talk with your competition

This comes with any league created through the link for half-price as well.

OK. I've sung the praises of the product enough, now let's talk about the actual league.

Star-divide

Right now I have a rough sketch of the league in my mind. Here's what I'm thinking:

-Keeper league that will ideally be for years to come,
-Minor leaguers that fill out each team's farm system,
-A little bigger league with 16-20 people,
-4 divisions (3 if we can't get 16-20 owners),
-Head to head,
-Playing for money,
-Me winning.

Any issues? Once we have an idea of how many people, what people want, etc. we can discuss auction vs. draft, draft time, roster spots, stats, etc.

Please post that you're in if you are, and I'll send out emails (if your email address isn't in your profile then include it, but make sure to spell out "@" or put speaces or something so you don't get spammed).

Also, here's the link to get additional leagues for half-price:

http://baseball.cbssports.com/splash/baseball/spln/mgmt/offer/a?ttag=fbbc10_on_all_sbnat_os_iab_0001

I've added a poll to determine how much the league fees should be. Please only respond if you plan on playing.

sweet

As i said before if its run through sportsline please count me in.

What stats are you thinking?

Tradional 5×5?

If its mixed leagues it needs to be at least 20 teams so everyone does not start an allstar team.

How are you going to handle waivers?

Weekly or daily league?

Position Eligibility?

Again, just tossing out ideas that need to be hashed out. Holla if you need any help and if there is a spot open,

OK...

I have sent out 20 invites (including myself drrrrrr). There were 3 people already signed up. I’ll give those that I’ve invited to Friday at noon to backout/not sign up.

It’s looking like a $25 dollar entry fee, but $50 could still make it.

Possible breakdowns:

$25×20=$500

Winner: $200
WS Loser: $50
Regs season champ: $50
4 division winners: $40
2 WC: $20

$50×20=$1000

Winner: $400
WS Loser: $100
Regs. season champ: $100
4 div. winners: $75
2 WC winners: $50

Thoughts?

With the great demand, I'm debating making it a 30 team league.

Does anyone have any reasonable objections against moving it from 24 to 30?

by rglass44 on Mar 10, 2010 2:04 PM EST reply actions

Payout scheme at 30 and $25:

Pot: $750
Winner: $300
WS Loser: $100
4 div. winners: $75
2 WC winners: $25

by rglass44 on Mar 10, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

If we do 30 I'd be willing to bet a handful are done by the AS break.

How do we go about backfilling owners when this happens?

One more year Brett. One more year.

by PriceMultiCyYoungs on Mar 10, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

If we bump it to $50 then we'd have another $750 to give out as weekly/monthly payouts to be sent at the end of the season

That should keep most people interested.

"It's good to have a little cushion. But it's not going to be easy."

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Mar 10, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

This is my feeling.

With 50 each we’d have $1500.

Winner – $600
Runner-up – $200
Regs season winner – $125
Div. Winners – $100
WC Winners – $75

That would leave an additional $400 to do weekly, monthly, etc. prizes. That could keep people interested.

I think there’d be 25 weeks of regs. season, so you could do like $10 a week and still have $150 left over to put elsewhere.

by rglass44 on Mar 10, 2010 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Boy, $50 is a lot (considering I'm using student loan money!).

But I’d be willing to do it in the name of 30 teams.

It might seem like a lot, but spread over 6 months it really isn't

Plus when you have the ability to recoup a chunk of it even if you have the worst team ever, it’s not so bad.

What are the keeper rules?

I didn’t see anything about that in the rules.

And I’ll send an email to the league on this, but we need to give some consideration into how long our draft is going to take. I think I saw a 90 second time limit per pick, but even if you assume people average 1 minute, with 30 teams and 21 rounds we are looking at a 10hr 30min draft.

I’m not generally a fan of this, but with the time needed and 30 owners’ schedules, what about doing an email draft, or even using a bulletin post? Not ideal, but neither is a 10 hour draft starting at 8pm.

That was just to have a draft slot.

I didn’ think we’d see this kind of interest.

I think e-mail or a board draft would be the best way to do it. We could do a fanshot. That could be fun especially because we could mock people going forward.

Did everyone have fun with the password?

by rglass44 on Mar 10, 2010 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

Could we do a CBS draft room without a time limit?

This would work like a message board, except we would still get to use our rankings and would clearly know who’s been selected. It still might take a few days to a week, but as long as there’s still some time before the regular season, it shouldn’t be a problem.

I think you need to do this to let us change our team names

How do I allow my owners to change their team names?

To allow owners to change team names, go to Setup/Teams&Owners and scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see “Advanced Features.” Select “Team Owner Permissions.” On the top portion of this page, you will find a segment labeled “General Owner Permissions.” Check the box for “Allow owners to change their team name.” Click “save” to lock in this adjustment.

by rglass44 on Mar 11, 2010 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

I should put it on my resume.

-During company time, I successfully managed a 30 team fantasy baseball league. I maintained spreadsheets in Excel detailing managers’ contracts, keepers, league finances (effectively managed a portfolio over $1500), and projected future outcomes. Coordinated draft times around many schedules using Outlook and Microsoft Scheduler.

by rglass44 on Mar 11, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions   2 recs

Posted this on the league message board too

Like others have said I think that a live draft with a long time in between picks is probably the best option.

But I was wondering if the March 16th date is a little too ambitous. It seems like there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding the league(How many keepers? How will the keeper system work? Stat Categories? Head to Head? How will everyone pay? How much is the entry league? What happens if we have a lot of people drop out next year?)

Also regarding the paying; Does everyone need to pay before the draft? I would hate to get towards the end of the season and half the teams haven’t paid and we never see that money.

by Sveet on Mar 12, 2010 10:56 AM EST reply actions

OK So today is the deadline for team's to sign up:

2 teams have yet to sign up that have received an invite. If they sign up we have 24, if they don’t I’d like to get 2 more to make 4 6-team divisions.

I’m sending out a paypal request to the league now. The deadline to paypal me the money is Monday at noon. If anyone has any issues feel free to email me.

I’m thinking the best way to do the draft will be via a fanshot. If we started Monday evening, we’d have about 20 days till opening day. We could do 2 rounds a day for two weeks to fill out our rosters (there about). Then we could do the MiLB portion over a few days as well (that one doesn’t necessarily be done before the season starts, biut it would be preferable).

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 11:12 AM EST reply actions

2 rounds a day might be a bit ambitious

Judging from the BtB WAR league that drafts in a similar manner. 2 rounds a day was a good pace and that’s with only 12 people in a league.

I think it’s still our best option, so we’ll just have to see how it goes.

I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

by Steve Slowinski on Mar 12, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

I still think the live draft with a decent amount of time in between picks is the best way to go

This makes it easy to know who is available. Who has been picked. You can see their draft rankings.

with 24 people if there is just one person who can’t get online it is going to hold up the whole draft. Which is a very probable scenario. If you have a time limit the live draft app will pick for that person and the draft can keep on moving. Also if you know you aren’t going to be able to be near a computer for a while you can set your queue so you can still get the player you want.

Strapping Young Lads

by Sveet on Mar 12, 2010 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Is that possible though?

Like what kind of time limit are you thinking?

It would be nice if we could do like 5 rounds 2 different evenings next week then finishing outside the application.

by rglass44 on Mar 12, 2010 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Haven't seen a paypal request come thru yet

Haven’t used PayPal in a lil while tho. Let me know if you did already send it and I’ll see if I can figure out what’s going on.

BTW – CBS is gonna take some serious getting used to. It really seems like a pain in the ass to navigate.

by ShawnTSA on Mar 12, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Why not just that extended draft feature?

If we’re doing a fanshot, aren’t we going to have to manage:
- the available player list (which after round 10 is going to be a nightmare)
- if one person is out for some reason, we’re all stuck indefinitely
- our own rosters (which shouldn’t be all that hard, but is easier if the player shows up on your team after you draft him)

Just do the longer draft feature on the site, everyone gets an hour during the day to draft, and set the timeframe longer at night. If you’re out for some reason, auto-pick will pick someone for you. We can all queue up 2 or 3 players from an auto-pick process, because that’s all we’ll need with how many teams we’re talking.

by TallMatt on Mar 13, 2010 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

How long are we thinking?

And is this even a possible function?

I imagine 20-30 minutes should be sufficient, but we could to something like 2-3 hours, just to make sure everyone gets a shot. I should hope we could do at least the first two rounds live, but if someone is not there for some reason, we might end up getting as little as one pick done!

from Cubs Stats and Twitter @BradleyWoodrum

by BWoodrum on Mar 13, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Is there some way that people could just check in every so often to see if you're coming up?

The guy with the first pick is going to have to wait 47 picks to get his second, so you’ve got a while. I think it requires people to just be vigilant and keep up. One advantage to a fanshot idea is that you can post from a mobile phone, where I don’t think that’s very likely on CBS.
