Rafael Soriano To Make Cameo Appearances This Spring

One of the best things about spring training is getting an up-close preview of new players. So far we've seen Sean Rodriguez and Kelly Shoppach mashing the baseball like we all hoped. We've also enjoyed seeing new closer Rafael Soriano and his dominating fastball...or not.

For those with hopes of seeing Soriano in a Rays uniform before opening day, you better not blink because you might miss him. See, Soriano is a bit of a different cat, and that means this thing called "spring training" is not the same for him. Instead of getting normal game work every few days, Soriano will make seven apperances this spring with each appearance lasting exactly one innings.

Knowing that his new toy is a creature of habit, Joe Maddon plans on letting Soriano do exactly what he wants.

"Conversationally, I felt like he really does understand what he needs to do [to get ready for the season]," Maddon said. "I'm trusting him right now. And really, he's very upbeat. A late-inning guy like that, seven appearances should be good. --Raysbaseball.com

Star-divide

Looking back at his history, this is nothing new for Soriano. Even people I've talked to say this is common of the 30-year-old closer. Going over the last five (six, really) seasons, here are the spring appearances and innings pitched for Soriano.

Soriano needed just five appearances last year and he did pretty well for himself ,so getting seven this season is a treat. As for any worries about being ready, Maddon isn't concerned.

"I've seen him work in the past. He's a high-effort guy and he's going to throw hard. And again, you do want to save it for the season. He's getting the benefit of the doubt right now. I believe him. He seemed to be well-thought out about how he wanted to get ready, so I was on board with it."

For now, Soriano continues to get some work in on the side and expects to get into live game action some time next week. It looks like that $7.25 million is taking his time walking through that door.

I'm not sure a pitcher with a history of arm problems should be making unilateral decisions about his Spring.

As for the benefit of the doubt, if he has issues the Rays won’t afford him the same freedoms next year…..oh wait.

In all seriousness, I’m sure if the Rays thought he needed more work, they would push the issue.

Anything longer and he said it would be a problem.

If you know how to pitch, you don't need to work every day

Jeff Bennett could throw every inning of ST and still blow

Me too. Me too.

The plus there is with our BP depth (and MiLB pitching depth) we can be cautious with him. I also don’t expect that Maddon will abuse him quite as bad as Cox does.

That's a bummer, best closer in the game right there.

By now in his career he should know what it will take for him to be in shape for the season.

The only issue, which probably isn’t a big one since he is a specialty reliever, is his special treatment and team cohesion, a la Joey Galloway.

OT: Haven't seen you around much this offseason.

Congrats on the Terps awesome ACC season. Hopefully we can knock y’all off in the final (or someone knocks Duke off anyway).

Glass, you seem to be the college basketball honk around here....

How does a guy get regular playing time when he shoots 19% FROM THE DAMN LINE!

One more year Brett. One more year.

I'd say Andy is probs the biggest college BB nut. I just watch the ACC until this time of year pretty much.

Who gets regs PT and shoots that poorly? I thought it was bad that Wake’s starting PG shoots under 50%, but as Chaz would say “THAT’S TURRBUL!”

lolz

They’re relatively overrated again this year. That conference is such a joke. It’s almost as bad as the Pac10.

by rglass44 on Mar 9, 2010 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

blasphemy!

Haha nothing is as bad as the Pac-10. I usually like to print out the major conference tournament brackets, and do my picks to practice for the ncaa tourney pool. (nerd, I know). I clicked on the Pac-10 and just said forget it when I saw their records. Apparently that is why I’ve seen almost literally 0 games out of that conference this year.

Thanks!

It has been a great year to be a Terp fan, and I hope they can keep it up. Things have been falling their way lately. The buzzer beater with GT, 2 OT vs. Va Tech, and the Duke game was nuts!! It should be a great tournament.

I have been around and have been lurking on here, but don’t have much to say. I’m looking forward to the start of the baseball season. I will likely start posting more then. Go Rays!!

Cheadle aggrivates the shit out of me.

He wants so badly to play hard-ass/bad-ass roles; it’s kind of hard to look the part when you’re 5’8" and 150lbs.

Unless you meant Soriano was in it, in which case I should have remembered that. Soriano does a terrible English accent.

Odds are Soriano is going to disappoint the average fan

The hope for this guy is just a bit extreme. Now I think the best FO in baseball has the proper expectations, but the fans are a bit off. They are expecting some shut it down, top of the line, lights out, strikeout machine closer. Soriano just isn’t going to be that.

Reasons:

1. He is supposedly ‘top dog’. Now I think if he splits some time with JP or Joe does the matchup thing then we will have a great bullpen. However he has split time with Mike G. If he is thrown to the wolves for full innings with no regards for lefty/righty splits his numbers will go down.

2. Health (obvious)

3. He overchieved in his bread and butter, strikeouts last year.

4. NL to AL

Now boy wonder and the great Rays FO probably know all of this. However it just seems the fans are thinking we just landed Papelbon. The best we can ask for is right handed compliment JP Howell. If used in that fashion they could be a two headed beast comparable to the Papelbon’s of the world, but if he is used as the public seems to want him to be used (as the sole closer) I think we are more likely to see a below average closer (say worse than 15th in terms of value out of all eligible closers)

Can we get robots for umpires and a computer to make in game strategy decisions? I'm sick of inconsistently bad umpiring and Joe's pitiful in game management. Oh and Navi (and BJ) need some PED's. BenZo, Bartlett, and Pena do not.

by matthan on Mar 9, 2010 12:58 PM EST reply actions

I like that he walks less than JP

Papelbon was incredibly lucky against us last year. I do feel that Soriano should be used with an eye towards mixing and matching as just throwing him out every ninth inning with a 1-3 run lead is lazy.

I agree

Given Maddon’s history of matchup playing I am fairly confident that he will. But then again when he has had a “closer” he kind of threw them to the wolves as well. IMHO the success of the closer role is really contigent on how Maddon manages. We have the talent to have one of the best closer roles in the league.

I would consider myself pretty close to an average fan

I may have a little more experience and watch more games than most fans but close. I would expect to see Soriano used as our primary closer with JP and maybe a few others now and then. I expect he will be close to as good as JP was early to mid last year. JP should also benefit from not having to pitch as many innings and therefore stay fresh longer into the season. I thought JP did a very good job until late in the year when the wheels fell off.

While I agree to a certain extent,

I would argue that:

1. He’s pitched in the AL and had success so I don’t think it will be a huge adjustment
2. While he is much better against righties, he’s not too shabby against lefties either
3. One of the big reasons for his uptick in K’s last year was his cutter. And while perhaps the pitch f/x numbers won’t necessarily show it, it was a huge pitch for him last year if you watched him on a regular basis.
4. While I’m not going to discount the AL East and try to pump up the NL East, one thing to keep in mind is that many of the better hitters were of the left handed variety – Howard, Utley, Rollins, Ibanez, Beltran (switch), Reyes (switch), Dunn, etc.

Health is going to be the main concern, but in reality he doesn’t suffer from that many more injuries than your typical power reliever. His two main injuries (Tommy John and nerve transposition surgery) took him out for extended times because they were either misdiagnosed or were prescribed rehab before surgery. His other injury (2006) was a freak head injury when he got hit in the head by a Vlad line drive.

by wilymo on Mar 9, 2010 1:28 PM EST reply actions

1. Well I think Soriano, personally won’t have much of an issue adjusting, but his numbers will decline because of it. Can’t expect NL type numbers in the AL
2. Same sort of concept as my first point. Yes he is good vs both sides, but he was ‘platooned’ in such a way to face his weakest side in the past. If that sort of protection goes away the his number will naturally rise.
3. I was going by the expected strikeout formula that I devised. He was a definite overachiever based upon his pitch results.
4. Switching from the NL East to the AL is probably a bit better on the numbers than say the NL West to the AL East, but either way his numbers should rise.

I’m not saying that he is going to suck or not strike anyone out. I think if we are going to set some sort of baseline expectation from him we should definitely expect K’s to decline, and all other stats to increase, especially if he faces both sides of the plate without regards to splits. He will still be a very very good pitcher for us though.

Go Gators!!
