Minor League Highlights 4/26
AAA Durham Bulls L 4-3
Heath Rollins made a spot start due to the fractured wrist suffered by VIrgil Vasquez. Rollins reminded us all why he was converted to a reliever by allowing four runs on seven hits including a home run, and a walk in four innings of work. He struck out one and generated three whiffs on his 64 pitches. The recently recalled Richard De Los Santos was excellent in relief going five innings allowing just one hit. He only struck out one, but induced nine ground outs to three fly outs. The De Los Santos boys sure seem to have some sink working.
Offensively, Dan Johnson hit his eight home run of the year, while Joe Dillon was 2-3 with a walk. Justin Ruggiano, Hank Blalock, Jose Lobaton, and Chris Richard all reached safely twice.
AA Montgomery Biscuits W 2-1
Darin Downs made his first start since fracturing his skull last season going 5.2 strong innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five. Unfortunately Double-D took a batted ball off his leg forcing another early exit as he limped off on his own power. Downs generated 7 whiffs on his 76 pitches. Offensively, Chris De La Cruz went 2-4 with a triple, while Emeel Salem (6) and Cody Strait each doubled (9).
A+ Charlotte Stone Crabs W 5-3
Nick Barnese allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in six innings while striking out five. Barnese also hit two batsmen and threw a wild pitch. His bullpen picked him up in a big way as Neil Schenk had four strikeouts in two innings of work for the win, and Josh Satow struck out two in the ninth to pick up the save. That makes 15 strikeouts and three walks in 9.1 innings for Satow on the season. Isaias Velasquez led the offense with a 4-5 night with three steals (8). Henry Wrigley, Matt Sweeney, and Ky Kang each contributed two hits, and Reid Fronk had a clutch pinch-hit double.

How long is Vasquez out?
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
A few weeks minimum, two fractured wrists
Throwing wrist is the less serious. Minor league time tables are tough to gauge as information is scarce.

How the heck did he break both of them?
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Getting run over as he rode his scooter to the ball park.
At no point should a professional player be allowed to ride scooters. That really should be part of their contracts.
De Los Santos
Even better than it sound like above. Didn’t allow any hits. Did hit one batter, but he was caught stealing a bit later. So, 5 innings, 15 batters. This from a guy who gave up 8 runs in his first 7 innings of AAA relief. Maybe a “road to Montgomery” experienced?
Thanks for the correction.
Indeed, it was 5 innings of no hit ball.

Interesting Quote form Dan Johnson on playing in Japan
As an American, he was subject to what he called a “huge” strike zone—he struck out 78 times in 325 at-bats, a much higher rate than usual for the normally selective Johnson. “I felt completely cheated… They made it as unfair as possible.” He played for Yokohama, a bad team that finished last in the league, and said that they benched him to keep him from reaching incentive bonuses and finally sent him back to the US two weeks before the season ended: they wanted to make sure that a Japanese player would lead the team in home runs, apparently. Johnson’s contract with Yokohama included a club option for a second year, but the team tried to re-negotiate the terms and Johnson opted to return to the US.
