Minor League Highlights 4/27
AAA Durham Bulls L 9-5
Carlos Hernandez was chased early four Durham after allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks through four innings. Hernandez struck out just one. Joaquin Benoit worked an inning of relief allowing one of each of the following: a walk, hit, run, and strikeout. Desmond Jennings sat out again with a shoulder injury. Justin Ruggiano had two hits and a walk and Chris Richard hit his third home run to lead the offense. Elliot Johnson (9th stolen base), Hank Blalock (2nd double), Dan Johnson, Alvin Colina, and Ryan Shealy (6th double) all reaches twice safely for the Bulls.
AA Montgomery Biscuits W 4-0
FreeZo fave David Newmann had a wonderful afternoon going 7.2 innings of shutout baseball allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out seven. The big lefty induced ten ground outs to four fly outs and generated seven whiffs in a very efficient 83 pitches. Matt Gorgen cleaned up for the save allowing one hit while striking out one in 1.1 innings of work. Emeel Salem went 3-4 with a walk out of the leadoff spot while Chris Nowak was 2-4 with a walk and his first double of the season. Matt Fields hit his third double and walked twice and Cody Cipriano was 2-4 with a walk.John Matulia added a triple and Greg Sexton his sixth double,
A+ Charlotte Stone Crabs L 5-3
Joe Cruz struck out six and walked two in his five innings but not before allowing five hits including a pair of solo shots. Tim Beckham was 1-3 with a walk and his second stolen base, but also committed his second error. Matt Sweeney was 1-3 with a walk, and Kyeong Kang was 0-4. Henry Wrigley hit a triple to extend his hitting streak to seven games and now has an OPS of 1.065 out of nowhere.
A Bowling Green Hot Rods W 4-2
Wilking Rodriguez was excellent once again allowing two runs on just two hits (one a HR) and two walks in six innings. Rodriguez struck out six in his effort. Kirby Yates pitched two scoreless frames including three strikeouts to pick up the save. Offensively no one reached base twice but Tyler Bortnick (5), Brett Nommensen (2), and Mayobanex Acosta (3) all swatted doubles for the Hot Rods.

Lots of interesting relief arms that we may never see
I think Gorgen has an outside chance, but a guy like Yates has been a nice find, but not sure he can survive the pitching rich system.

Yates, Shuman, Fleming, Satow, Quate
Are all lighting up A and A+ ball. I’m leaning towards doing a piece on the five for next week as well as a look of current MLB relievers that were not converted starters.

"Desmond Jennings sat out again with a shoulder injury."
Then I check the cbs.sportsline site and their take on him is as follows:
Rays OF prospect Desmond Jennings has 16 hits in his last 39 at-bats (.410) over 10 games for Triple-A Durham to raise his batting average to .377 for the season. He has one home run and 18 RBI in 77 at-bats.
(Updated 04/27/2010).
Fantasy Analysis
Jennings is arguably the top outfield prospect in the minors and could be an impact player for the Rays in the second half of this season. He has missed some time this season with a wrist injury, but it clearly is no longer an issue. Jennings is a must-stash in AL-only and long-term keeper leagues.
Gotta love it…
"I think we should put this guy on blast and let all the guys around town know to make sure you don’t leave your GFs around Evan Longoria while he’s in town because he has no class or respect for other men."
