Minor League Highlights 5/23

AAA Durham Bulls Game 1 W 18-1

This game was continued from yesterday when Aneury Rodriguez pitches two scoreless innings to begin the game. Richard De Los Santos picked it up today and allowed one run on six hits and two walks in five innings while striking out four. The story of the game was the offense led by Dan Johnson and his 3-4 effort with two home runs (13) and 8 RBI. Desmond Jennings was 2-4 with a walk, his 6th double and 10th steal. Joe Dillon was 3-4 with a pair of doubles (12) and a walk. Elliot Johnson, Justin Ruggiano, Chris Richard, and Fernando Perez all added multi-hit games for the Bulls.

AAA Durham Bulls Game 2 L 1-0

18 runs in game one, so this result seemed somewhat inevitable. Carlos Hernandez pitched two scoreless innings prior to the call to the pen, so let's hope he is okay. RJ Swindle allowed the lone run on a home run to a righty in his two innings of work. The LOOGY candidate did strike out four. The offense was two-hit, as Dan Johnson and Angel Chavez each had a single and a walk.

AA Montgomery Biscuits W 6-1

Alex Torres had a strong outing allowing just one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven in 6.2 innings. He induced 10 swinging strikes on 103 pitches, his highest pitch count of the season. 9 of the 12 batted outs came on the ground. For the second consecutive game Drew Anderson reached safely in all four plate appearances, finishing 3-3 with a walk. Matt Sweeney was 1-3 with his third double and a walk, while John Matulia was 2-5 with his 7th double.

A+ Charlotte Stone Crabs W 10-3

Shane Dyer went six innings allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. 11 of the 13 batted outs recorded by Dyer came by way of grounders. Reid Fronk was 3-3 with 3 doubles (11) and 2 walks, while Matt Joyce was 2-3 with a double and a pair of walks. Stephen Vogt was 3-4 with his 7th double and a walk. Leslie Anderson was 2-5 with his second double. Tim Beckham continued his tear going 1-3 with a pair of walks and two stone bases (7)

A Bowling Green Hot Rods W 6-4

Alex Colome lasted six innings allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Scott Shuman picked up his fifth save despite a bout of wildness Shuman allowed one run in on one hit and three walks, though he did strike out the side. The offense was led by Juilo Cedeno who was 3-4 with his first home run. Chris Murrill was 3-5 with a pair of doubles (5), while Tyler Bortnick was 2-3 with a walk and his 13th double.

Tim Beckham's wOBA now up to .333 and OPS up .717.

Still has a .256 BABIP, but he’s walking 9.4% of the time.

It's great to see him get it going.

Hopefully it’s the beginning of a good year and noit just a hot streak. Either way I think his season line will be down from what it could be because of the wrist injury.

Beckham's last 10 games:

.341/.386/.683/1.069
41 ABs, 2 BB, 8 K, 3 HR, 2 3B, 1 2B

The BB/K is lower than you like to see, but the way he’s swinging the bat you gotta imagine he’s swinging at mostly good pitches. His k-rate is down at just under 20%, but you’d like to see it even lower.

His May line is up to .257/.333/.500 which is very respectable. His k-rate for the month is much too high at 30%, but his 9% walk rate is a step in the right direction. Gotta love the power outburst.

From everything I've read on this site

A lost of those Ks are looking, versus swinging. The hope is that he’s trying to improve his plate approach (which is better than just him not being able to make contact)
