Minor League Highlights 5/27: A New Aussie
AAA Durham Bulls L 4-3
Aneury Rodriguez went 5.2 innings allowing one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Rodriguez induced just 4 whiffs on his 82 pitches. "The Strandman" Jason Cromer made his season debut in relief allowing three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Cromer allowed three walks, but true to form, all the runs went as unearned to keep his ERA down. Desmond Jennings was 0-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch. The Bulls only mustered four hits with Elliot Johnson's 9th double being the lone extra base-hit.
AA Montgomery Biscuits W 7-2
Jeremy Hall pitched eight shutout innings giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out five. Hall generated 11 whiffs on 99 pitches. Nevin Ashley and JJ Furmaniak paced the offense with 3-4 nights. Matt Sweeney was 1-4 with a strikeout.
A+ Charlotte Stone Crabs L 8-6
It was Frank De Los Santos' turn to suffer from the curse of the Charlotte BABIP allowed. De Los Santos allowed 8 runs on 8 hits and a walk in 5 innings while striking out one. 6 of the 9 batted outs came on the ground, but one flyball left the yard. Josh Satow struck out the side in order in the 8th. Tim Beckham went 2-4 with his fourth double, while Matt Joyce swatted a home run as part of a 1-4 effort. Reid Fronk continues to be a OBP machine going 0-1 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Catcher Matt Spring went 2-2 with his third home run and a walk.
For those interested, it appears Matt Moore is on the hill tonight in Dunedin.
A Bowling Green Hot Rods L 10-2
Kyle Lobstein continued his struggles in Bowling Green allowing four runs on two hits, both home runs, while walking six in just four innings. Lobstein did strike out four hitters. The Hot Rods managed just five hits, three coming from Dustin Biell including two doubles (6). Ty Morrison (5) and Mark Thomas (2) also added doubles. Tyler Bortnick drew a pair of walks, but also committed two errors.
Other Notes:
Grant Balfour is no longer the only Aussie within the Rays organization. Seventeen-year old Darryl George signed a minor league deal with the Rays this week. He is expected to attend to play in the Gulf Coast League for the Rays in 2011. For the announcement click here. George is busy representing Victoria at the Australian Schoolboys' Championship.

Schoolboy's club
Are you saying he should become fashionable or elitist or snarky or condescending? Is he supposed to adopt logical fallacies as his core technique of debate? Is he supposed to bleat religious proclamations and claim they are "proved" by statistics when they aren’t?

I'd guess S-Rod
They have excess flexibility right now, so the usual premium isn’t there. A trade is always a possibility but this isn’t a spot where they are forced to trade, so the price would have to be right.

I don't think so
Still have Kapler, Bartlett, Longoria, Zobrist, Aybar, Shoppach, Upton.

Isn't that the idea behind S-Rod?

I was at the Charlotte game in Dunedin.
Beckham’s two hits were solid line drives. The first went slightly to the RF side of CF. The second was a first pitch screamer that hit the left field wall almost before the fielder could turn around. I think it was the only AB he did not get pretty deep into the count.
The K was looking on a pitch a bit low and away but probably a correct call. Very close. In his other AB, he went to 3-1 when the runner at 1B was picked off for the third out. (Charlotte had 3 runners thrown out on the bases, including Beckham on a steal attempt.) He began the next inning in an 0-2 hole before hitting a high bouncer to 3B.
In the field, he made all the plays smoothly. They were generally routine. On one he hesitated whether to charge or let the ball come to him, but only for a split second and then charged quickly to scoop and made a perfect throw to get the runner by quite a bit. He did range far to his right on a very hard hit grounder that he dove to stop from going through but could not control as he fell to the grass. I doubt he would have gotten the out even had he come up with it.
Joyce looked terrible on some off-speed pitches on which he struck out. The grand slam came on a 3-2 fast ball that he must have been looking for after the pitcher just missed on a couple of off-speed pitches.
Matt Spring’s home run hit high off the left field light tower. I mean really high! Wow!!!
After a terrific first inning, De Los Santos got hit hard in every inning. Satow looks like he is about 5’ tall and throws very softly. One K came on a high change or curve that seemed to hang over the plate chest high but the batter swung and missed. He topped out at 86 on the radar but threw most pitches at 73-76.
Thanks for the report
A few questions:
Was the called strike 3 on a full count?
How did Satow’s change look overall? That’s supposed to be his pitch.
What about Schenk?

I'm hoping to go Sunday
Debating between taking my 3 yr old daughter to the Crabs or Rays. I’d do the Crabs b/c I don’t think she will last but 3 or 4 innings. But Pena is her favorite, and she’d love that toothbrush holder.

The Rays are sold out tonight?
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Haha, that's a foolish question.

I do not remember the count,
but I am pretty sure it was at least 2-2. I don’t think it was 3-2, because I don’t remember him taking a step towards 1B. He looked back at the umpire as if to question the call though.
Satow’s change was excellent. Actually, I don’t remember anyone even hitting a loud foul, and there were quite a few swings and misses. I just cannot see it working at a higher level.
Schenk was fine, but I didn’t see anything special. Seems to me his “fly balls” were more pop-up types rather than deep fly balls, with the outfielders drifting in to get them. There may have been one line drive near the left field line that Kang made a nice running catch on.
Incidentally, the 3rd base runner thrown out was Spring. With the Stone Crabs down 5-0, and I think 2 outs, he singled home a run and on the throw home tried to stretch it to a double. d’Arnaud threw the ball from his knees falling forward and bounced it to 2B where the tag was made by about 2 feet.
Satow's height?
According to MiLB and the Cube, he is 5’10" and 155 lbs. He sure did not look that tall, but maybe among his teammates who are generally over 6’ he appeared tiny. He did replace the 6’3" Schenk.
Added to Post: Matt Moore should be on the hill tonight in Dunedin
