Tampa Bay Rays Owner Stuart Sternberg: "Baseball will not work long-term in downtown St. Pete"
Full presser:
ST. PETERSBURG, FL-Following a meeting with St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster, Tampa Bay Rays principal
owner Stuart Sternberg said the team wants to explore all potential new ballpark options within Tampa Bay,
including those outside St. Petersburg and Pinellas County."The future of Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay depends on finding the optimal site for a new ballpark,"
said Sternberg. "It is my conviction that if baseball is to survive and flourish in Tampa Bay for the long-term,
we must rise above municipal boundaries and work together with a common interest."Added Sternberg, "We will consider any potential ballpark site in Tampa Bay, but only as part of a process that
considers every ballpark site in Tampa Bay."Sternberg said he believes baseball can succeed in Tampa Bay and that he is committed to doing all he can to keep the team in the region.
"When I assumed control of the Rays almost five years ago, it was commonly assumed that winning would
change everything at Tropicana Field. Everyone believed that with a winning team on the field, fans would fill
the stands. That has not been the case."Sternberg continued, "Our ability to compete and, quite frankly, to survive rests on our ability to attract people
and businesses to our ballpark. Our customers are our fans. And like any other business, we need to be in a
location that is convenient for our fans to reach us."
In discussing the Rays future, Sternberg confirmed that he wants the team to remain in Tampa Bay but for that
to happen a regional discussion needs to begin soon.
"Baseball in the Tampa Bay area does not belong to Stu Sternberg, just as it doesn't belong to St. Petersburg
or Tampa, Pinellas or Hillsborough. It is a regional asset. It belongs to our fans throughout the region. For
this asset to be preserved, a comprehensive process to explore a new ballpark must begin. That process
needs to consider all possible locations throughout Tampa Bay - meaning Tampa and Hillsborough as well."Sternberg said being able to explore all possible stadium options to keep the team in Tampa Bay was "the right thing for our fans and for all the residents of Tampa Bay."
Until that discussion began in earnest, he continued, the team cannot and will not make a decision on a future ballpark in Tampa Bay and the air of uncertainty over the future of Major League Baseball in the area will
continue to linger."The Rays are a valued member of our regional community, and that's exactly how we want things to remain,"
Sternberg said. "We appreciate all the support we have received from our loyal base of fans and supporters in
both turning around this franchise and in trying to figure out how to keep it here in Tampa Bay."Sternberg concluded, "The Rays organization stands ready to engage. We have an opportunity to secure the
future of Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay. I look forward to working with you."
Note that the quote contained in the headline of this post is pulled directly from the press conference itself, but is not included in the press release.

Heartbreak Kid
I know this is a reality if Rays baseball is to really thrive, but its sad nonetheless. I love the Trop, for a lot of reasons, but mainly because its all i really know of major league ball. Its been my home, so to speak, for many years. And while i understand all the knocks the park takes, I always feel giddy when I’m there, like part of some weird experiment that caught on, or a funny little in-joke for us Rays fans…
Also, if a new park is built outside of St. Pete, and to some extent, Pinellas, that will be kind of sad, too.
Its a shame the stands aren’t filled. Logistics aside, I think its really unfortunate. I understand that a trip from, say, Brandon to the Trop is kind of a bitch, but I moved from St. Pete to Fort Myers a few years ago, and I still make it up regularly. Am I better fan? No, but I do believe you don’t know what you’ve got till its gone, and I always took it for granted that I could hop on 275 in the Point and be at the park in less than ten minutes. I think others will feel the same if (and when) they move it to Channelside, or out by Ray Jay, or whatever…
All that aside, lets shake off this slump, get the rotation back in kick ass mode, and TAKE BACK FIRST!!!!!!

I’m indifferent on the whole stadium issue. I’m good with the one we have now. And I’m good with getting a new one. It is nice having it in Pinellas, but if the better economic move is Tampa, that’s fine. Whatever keep the team local and competitive.

Isn't the rent free for the Rays at the Trop?
I thought the city owns the Trop and team leases for free? What’s the Trop’s overhead then to the team? I
I don't think this is true

Rent is low
But almost no team pays significant rent. Most teams’ “rent” is the property taxes they would pay if the stadium wasn’t on land owned by the city. They’re called PILOTs (payments in lieu of taxes). I suspect that’s the deal the Rays have as well.

Yep, totally agree
I like living 5 minutes away from the Trop, but I’m not going to be selfish and stamp my feet and demand the team stay there. Of course, I am partial to the Carillon area of Pinellas over other proposed sites, but in the end I’m all for the team playing in the best spot for Tampa Bay, regardless of county.
Too bad I’m not Bill Foster, mayor of St. Petersburg.

I did not have the benefit of watching the press conference. RJ posted something labeled as the “full presser,” which did not contain the quote that he used as the headline.
If he said that exact quote at some other point in the press conference, it really wouldn’t have been a big deal to throw that in an extra sentence or two after the block quote. But the way it was done, it left the impression that the block quote is all Stu said, and RJ was editorializing in his headline but making it look like an exact quote.

best point i've seen made about the stadium
is they put the stadium on the wrong side of the lot when they built it. if they had put it close to downtown st pete instead of putting the parking lot there it would have created more room to built a stadium community. Instead there is basically just one bar within walking distance of the stadium.

Wow I was with him for the first half, but then he just went off the wall.
WTF does this even mean:
David Price pitched well in Sunday’s loss at Florida, but he missed a chance to take the American League lead in wins. This is where the relative youth of Tampa Bay’s pitching staff creates a question about maintaining a high performance level all the way through the 162-game grind.
Because he didn’t re-assume the AL wins lead the team doesn’t know how to play a full season’s worth of games? I’d blame the writer, but really an editor has no business green-lighting this. Just awful.

Fair point. It seems like the most likely location would be somewhere in Gateway, be it Toytown, Airco (v. unlikely), Derby Lane, or somewhere else.
The big downfall from that is that no matter where it goes there will be some public funding. In exchange for that public funding the stadium should provide some sort of economic development boost. Unfortunately there isn’t really anything to boost in Gateway, unless other development is built around it to take advantage of that. But where is that money going to come from?
It’s a tough question, and one that I don’t see moving anywhere with the economy in the state it is.

I think the traffic around RayJay is a major detriment on the weekdays. It works fine on Sundays for football but having the game contend with afternoon rush hour with people on the way home doesn't seem like the right fit.

Also a new stadium will cause much higher gameday experiences. More to park, no bringing in food/drink, higher ticket prices….

Orlando
I’m in Orlando at least once a week playing baseball and constantly during our games you hear “Pena just went yard again!!” or “That kid Hellickson is our third best pitcher right now” or “Rays suck! Yankees/Red Sox will kick their ass!” There are fans in Polk and Orange county that will make that trip for sure.
It’s an hour fifteen from the Fairgrounds to Downtown Orlando at 10pm, which I think is the key time most people consider when deciding to make a trip to a sporting event. Leaving early enough to get to the game is one thing, but when can I get home and get to sleep is more important.

It brings in all of northern Pinellas county. A big problem with the Trop is that it’s easier for someone from Tampa to get to the game then someone from Palm Harbor.

Not really
It’s still a huge pain in the ass to get to Carillon from anywhere west of US 19. That’s more of a general transportation problem than anything though. There’s no good west county N/S highway, and there’s no good E/W vein of traffic.

Agreed
I’d rank them
1. Carillon
2. CSide
3. Westshore

I'm not that familiar with Carillon...
Could you google map it for me?

I'm about to post a bunch of HTML code, certain it won't work, but I'm hoping there's a slight chance it will.

That’s right where my sister just moved to. There is a ton of available land right there. I could just park at her place call and call a taxi.

The fairgrounds is a poor area
There is nothing around it. You need restaurants, shops, and bars. Same problem as near RayJay. Football stadiums don’t require a good surrounding atmosphere. Baseball stadiums are much more like hockey or basketball in that respect.
Go Gators!!
There's a huge fucking casino right there.

That's been my biggest point of it, cutting 30-45 mins off the drive time makes it a realistic option for Orlandoites
to want to head down. Right now it’s just impossible to get out of work at 5 and get to the park at 7. That’s a huge market that could be brought in.

St. Pete is just a minor league town
It just isn’t ready for the big show
1. Not enough people close by
2. Not enough $$$$ close by
3. Not enough businesses close by
4. Poor entertainment and food
5. Too many cheap retirees
Seeing and listening to the anti-stadium St Pete crowd just breaks my heart. They have no idea what baseball means to the community and the city. They have no idea how many hearts they are breaking. They had the golden goose; a waterfront stadium at Al Lang. It would have put St Pete on the map and made it a true destination. Christ I bet Stu would have changed the name to the “St Pete Rays” for a deal to get that stadium. It would have made the city big time, instead the city is going to lose baseball. It will go back to being some crappy retirement village on one half and some dangerous ghetto on the other.
Lets just hope the region doesn’t lose baseball. That will kill the region.
As a resident of Pinellas and the TB Area my entire life I am absolutely sick of this rivalry between the two cities. It is really only old people and politicians that care about this. Nobody I know gives a rats hoot whether the stadium is there or here. It is all the same to us. I am a resident of Tampa Bay, my allegiance isn’t to a particular city within this region.
Go Gators!!

I've always thought that if Tampa, St. Pete, and Clearwater functioned as one political entity that the region would be better off
If they could go back and set it up all over again I’d suggest a burrough style like NYC and have a city of Tampa Bay.
I agree; the current structure just creates way too many hurdles
And frankly the bulk of the citizens do not think of them as truly separate entities. We do not identify with either “Tampa” “St Pete” Clearwater" “Brandon” “Largo”, but rather Tampa Bay.
Go Gators!!
Some thoughts:
Is moving the team to Tampa really going to help? You still have a lot of fans that are going to blame the drive. Florida is much more sprawling than Chicago or New York. I doubt there are a million people that live within 30 minutes of downtown Tampa.
I still don’t understand why the Rays haven’t insisted that MLB make the Phillies & Yanks move their spring training. There are some entrenched fans that might switch over to the Rays if they had no other options…

I just don't get the rivalry between the sides of the bay
If Europe can unify under a common currency, after numerous wars, a Holocaust, and language barriers shouldn’t the two sides of the bay be able to work together?
Go Gators!!
It wasn't a possible reference
Whether it is a good or bad idea was totally irrelevant to what I said. The point was that they were working together given all their differences and historical problems.

This is nearly universally wrong.

I really hate the Trop
outside of the roof and A/C. I’ve been to Petco, Minute Maid, Rangers Park, and will go to Target Field next week. Go to any one of those yards and you’ll never view the Trop in the same manner again.

The thing St pete (local leaders and citizens)
need to understand is there is no local rivalry between St. Pete and Tampa. Its over, I know in the 80’s the cities were close in size and stature but now its the Tampa Bay area, not St Pete and that’s because the population, airport, pro teams, large business districts, super bowls, republican national convention, large malls, concerts….. Are in Tampa. and that’s where the Rays have to be to make money. The Abc collation just did a study to say something every resident in this area knows more people live in and around Tampa then St Pete.
I have a feeling the reason it's called the Tampa Bay area
is because the bay is called Tampa Bay and nothing else.
