Time For The Rays To Trade BJ Upton ?

Something i can't help but notice is the rise and fall of BJ Upton in a Rays uniform and i firmly believe he needs to be traded which would benefit both him and the Rays going forward. There is no doubt the awesome amount of talent this guy has but events in the past have somewhat hindered his progress and the time to move on has come. Firstly the shoulder injury in 2009 was something that completely stopped the momentum of the 2008 WS and was a huge setback . He started to regain his form towards the back of 2009 when he was crushing balls and showing the form of 08 when he hit for the cycle towards the end of the season. What i believe is the problem now is the fact he went to arbitration with the Rays to start this season and felt he was worth more than he actually is. I believe now that ego has got the better of him and now we are seeing a guy who plays to the level he thinks he should by the salary he's being paid. The fact Evan Longoria rightly had words in the dugout after a slack effort from him shows to the fans that his heart really isn't in it even though he says the right things when being interviewed. This is not the first time he has showen a lack of hustle and i don't think it will be the last.  It's time to move on. The Rays need a power bat more than anything and should package Upton in a trade for someone that can contribute to this team for a title shot. I believe this move will not only help the Rays but the future of Upton as well. I also believe that Desmond Jennings is ready to be promoted and take over the CF role if Upton was to be traded meaning that the Rays can concentrate on a bat for the DH spot.

It's also the wrong site because

of runon sentences, lack of commas and missed capitalization.

That said, if they can get the right price for Upton, then great. But right now his value is at an all-time low. Buy low, sell high is the name of the game, and there’s almost no way we could “win” an Upton trade right now. Better off hoping his offense rebounds a bit and seeing what happens from there.

Also, while Jennings could replace Upton, then who would replace Crawford next year?

I have nothing against BJ as a person

This is about what i believe which directions BOTH the Rays and Upton should take for the betterment of both parties. The Rays can;t think about CC and next year when they have a chance to great things this year.

by AUSSIExRULES on Jul 15, 2010 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

How much of an improvement do you think Jennings is from Upton

And how much do you think we can get in return? I suspect that trading Upton right now is close to a zero sum game. Upton is still hitting average and playing great defense. I wouldn’t expect a rookie first coming up to hit much better than average, although there probably won’t be much of a drop in defense. So it really depends on what we get back. If we can get the bat our lineup needs on rental, then great. If we could swing BJ Upton for Adam Dunn, I wouldn’t necessarily be against it (although I think it hurts us in the future, since Joyce is a big defensive downgrade from Upton). I just doubt it.

And frankly

For all the free agents we were worried about coming into this offseason, the only two who have had an impact this year are Crawford and Soriano. I think we DO need to think about next year, because chances are that team will be just as good as this one.

When it starts impacting on others

That is the time to start looking at it. Stats aren’t everything but team chemistry is. The facts are that Upton dogged it and was confronted by Longoria. When that starts to happen and it isn’t the first time, then it is time to explore opportunites.

"Everyone knows the Rays want to unload BJ." I doubt everyone knows that, and further I'm sure they would rather him start hitting and have a cost controlled 5 tool stud

“They are going to get crap for him.” Probably not, since again he is a cost controlled player who has at least flashed 5 tool abilities.

“But what do they do” Should have ended in a comma or a questionmark

“Let him go and get nothing,” Not going to happen

“or trade him and try to get something for the future.” If there was an attractive enough deal out there I’m sure the Rays would take it, but the same can be said for every single player on their roster.

This is stupid

I’ll concede he has mental lapses, but the notion he doesn’t try is absurd. I went to the final game before the break (Family Day). Upton had hit a double and I believe a sac fly and the next time he came up he still was greeted by father/son attacks of “Don’t be lazy BJ!” and “BJ Lazyton”. Two different families both within earshot. Its disgusting. I have no problme with people choosing to give it to him if he does loaf on a play, but that play should not define him forever.

I said he is prone mental lapses

Its not a daily, weekly, or monthly occurance though. THe impact of lapses on his or the teams performance is blown way out of proportion. Nor is Upton the only player to have a lapse. He does receive unfair treatment. Lapses are frustrating, but ideally he would be treated equally.

I was at that game too

The lady behind me bitching about how awful he is then he smoked a double that was a foot for a homerun. I was like “how do you like that?” She bitched that he should’ve been at third so then I proceeded to flip out on her. I told her there were two outs and if he would’ve gotten thrown out at third then it would’ve been the end of the inning. I also said he should score on a base hit, and guess what? He did.

So as far as average fans are concerned, he’s damned if he does, he’s damned if he don’t….

by Travis Lee on Jul 16, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's my question for you

Why does team chemistry change? Will it make you less likely to swing at pitches in the dirt? Will it make you more likely play through an injury? Will it let you hit the ball harder? Will it make you more likely to dive into second to stop a double play?

And, if team chemistry doesn’t do any of the above, or some tangible difference on the field, why does it matter?

by benderbrodriguez on Jul 16, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd say team chemistry does matter

Being happy can translate to working harder and performing better than what you would have otherwise.

This is something that is pretty difficult to measure if not impossible. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. And I think a safe conclusion would be the impact of this emotion will have wildly different impacts across the spectrum of players.

Here is just one article…

Go Gators!!

by matthan on Jul 16, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Chemistry does matter

It cannot be measured statistically, but BJ Upton is far from a clubhouse cancer. There are far worse players on other teams that can bring down a team. BJ Upton is the least of this team’s problems. I think his value should be measured on what he does on the field. He apologized to the team and has busted his ass since. A problem child is one who does what he did, and then fails to address the team or starts throwing crap around in the dugout saying everyone is wrong.

by Travis Lee on Jul 16, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Chemistry matters very little in baseball. There’s simply not enough team play for it to matter. That being said, BJ is not a disliked in the clubhouse. Longo said he is one of his closest friends. Of course, the media would have you think otherwise cause controversy sells.

by Jeffrey Borbas on Jul 16, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Any change of performance related to chemistry or happiness

should show up in the statistics somewhere. Maybe the player wants to never go back to the dugout again, and starts becoming overly passive to draw out at bats. The passivity can be measured, the fact that he is being passive because he is unhappy with the rest of the people in the dugout is not. Its why things like chemistry and emotion are ignored. Too difficult to program.

by Navi's_Navy on Jul 17, 2010 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure it does show up in the statistics

I’m sure it happens all the time. It is just impossible to measure. It is a variable that we cannot see so we just ignore it. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. We just don’t have the capabilities to model it.

If I had to guess quite a bit of performance swings would be due to some type of off the field issue. Whether it is chemistry, personal happiness, etc.

Either way just because we cannot model it doesn’t mean we should ignore it. Each team should try to have the best team environment as possible.

Go Gators!!

I'm going to take a shot at being civil here, seeing how I am not in the BJ Upton bandwagon:

I want to be clear, that I am not at all being sarcastic or smarmy, but am attempting to prove a point to you.

There is no doubt the awesome amount of talent this guy has but events in the past have somewhat hindered his progress and the time to move on has come.

How do you know this? What ‘events’ are you talking about, what progress were you expecting him to make? What talent are you referring to?

Firstly the shoulder injury in 2009 was something that completely stopped the momentum of the 2008 WS and was a huge setback.

How do you know this? What ‘momentum’ are you referring to that never manifested itself? Seeing how he’s been pretty streaky his entire career, what is it that you know that says that he can sustain that performance for an extended period of time?

He started to regain his form towards the back of 2009 when he was crushing balls and showing the form of 08 when he hit for the cycle towards the end of the season.

How do you know this? What is this ‘form’ you keep referring to? What are your expectations of how he should be/have been performing?

What i believe is the problem now is the fact he went to arbitration with the Rays to start this season and felt he was worth more than he actually is.

How do you know this? What evidence do you have that directly correlates him losing a whopping $300,000 in arbitration while still receiving a $3 million dollar contract to his performance?

I believe now that ego has got the better of him and now we are seeing a guy who plays to the level he thinks he should by the salary he’s being paid.

Seriously, this is just unbelievably stupid. For $3,000,000 the Rays have a player who is vastly underperforming his expected value offensively but for $3,300,000 they could have had an elite superstar?

The fact Evan Longoria rightly had words in the dugout after a slack effort from him shows to the fans that his heart really isn’t in it even though he says the right things when being interviewed.

How do you know this? What metric are you using for motivation? I’ll give you a hint; the only thing you can learn with what your eyes see is how to speculate on things you don’t know anything about. Unless you’ve talked to BJ Upton and asked him about his motives for playing the game, you can’t answer this.

I also believe that Desmond Jennings is ready to be promoted and take over the CF role if Upton was to be traded meaning that the Rays can concentrate on a bat for the DH spot.

How do you know this? Frankly, I agree here, but I’m pretty sure that you don’t know why you know this other then some radio show hack told you so.

tools are there, but a bit raw. In the same way Ryan Sweeney was a big guy with potential who never developed monster power, I feel Glaesmann might fall in the same way. I think people (the typical fan) should just lower their expectation of Upton

Instead of hoping that he will change into some superstar you should just enjoy what he is. If you do that, then you’ll realize that he is an average CF and quite useful for this team.

Even if it his potential never bears any fruit he will still be a pretty decent CFer. We don’t need to have the top player at every single position.

If BJ was hitting .300 and had 10-15 homeruns very few would be harping on lack of hustle

I get very frustrated by BJ’s apparent lack of hustle/focus but the more I think about the situation, the more I realize his batting numbers are creating the criticisms. Longo may have ripped into him for being lazy but most fans would have been less active joining the anti-BJ bandwagon had his production been better. Dan Sileo has made the point that a “top” performing athlete may slack but the coaches/players in that situation would encourage not criticize him.

What apparent lack of hustle are you referring to? Do you watch him in practice? Do you even watch the games? He has 25 SB’s… I’d say he’s running his ass off. Other than 1 play this year where he arguably shouldn’t have even been the one to get to that ball, please explain to me where this lack of hustle is.

by Jeffrey Borbas on Jul 16, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

it's offense?

Really? Cause he has the 6th highest wOBA on the team… ahead of Pena… ahead of Bartlett… ahead of SRod… etc. It’s expetations and ONLY expectations. He’s an average player with higher than average potential with a lower than average salary.

by Jeffrey Borbas on Jul 16, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

But it should be about a combination of things since baseball is about more than one thing. Being picked off is another example of not being switched on. We just saw that in the game against the Yankees today at such a crucial time. If BJ was hitting .300 he would most likely be more enthusiastic in the field.

So if they move bj into the three hole

He wont be lazy, he will care and he wont be black?

Of course!

I can’t believe Maddon has not yet caught on to the obvious correlation.

Edmonds=Bossman

Edmonds would have been lazy, black and didn’t care but LaRussa didn’t disrespect him in the lineup and he made gritty over the head diving catches that delighted the fans.

Angels

I would like to see the Rays make a deal with the Angels. Napoli and minors for Upton?

by tkemp on Jul 26, 2010 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

I thought this about 2 years ago...

…and I know we shouldn’t trade in the division. But a three team deal, BJ for Joba trade would make sense on multiple levels for both players. Fresh starts, young talents.

Trade him in a heartbeat

BJ’s drum has been beaten to death in Tampa. It’s time for this feller to move on. If he moves and hits .300 and knocks in 100 runs well Tampa fans can simply say he stunk most of the time in Tampa. Unfortunately, no team will take Upton unless he’s packaged with a prospect or perhaps Jason Bartlett. I can see a BJ/Bartlett package for a contact hitter(Who beats the hell out of me) and the Rays simply wash their hands. Brignac and Rodriguez is a spectacular combo. Bring Jennings up and let him play as late inning substitute. Zobrist can field center and Joyce in right.

Because this is how people remember Josh Hamilton. If I’m trading Beej and Bartlett I want a young stud under team control for 4 years at least. I don’t think the Angels have that player, but Austin Jackson or Gaby Sanchez might be nice players to target depending on what else is thrown in. Jackson would give us exactly what we need (what Beej should strive to be) a contact hitter that uses his speed. Sanchez gives us a 1B for the foreseeable future. Bartlett has no value so it’s basically Beej for either of these guys and maybe a throw-in from each side.

And if one has a problem using stats to prove a point, then use your eyes.
