7/29/2010 OTTOTD We're All Suckers!

The personal details of 100 million Facebook users have been collected and published online in a downloadable file, meaning they will now be unable to make their publicly available information private.

However, Facebook downplayed the issue, saying that no private data had been compromised.

The information was posted by Ron Bowes, an online security consultant, on the Internet site Pirate Bay.

Bowes used code to scan the 500 million Facebook profiles for information not hidden by privacy settings. The resulting file, which allows people to perform searches of various different types, has been downloaded by more than 2,400 people.

This means that if any of those on the list decide to change their privacy settings on Facebook, Bowes and those who have the file will still be able to access information that was public when it was compiled.

Bowes’ actions also mean people who had set their privacy settings so their names did not appear in Facebook’s search system can now be found if they were friends with anyone whose name was searchable.

"As I thought more about it and talked to other people, I realized that this is a scary privacy issue. I can find the name of pretty much every person on Facebook," he wrote.

"Facebook helpfully informs you that "[a]nyone can opt out of appearing here by changing their Search privacy settings" — but that doesn't help much anymore considering I already have them all (and you will too, when you download the torrent). Suckers!"

Right, I watched the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankee affiliate the other night that had

Chad Tracy, Chad Moeller (we got free tacos because he was the K-Man and struck out), and Erik Bruntlett among others. I’ll take our AAA team of homegrown prospect talent, over them getting a bunch of guys that can’t hack it in the majors anymore inflating their record.

He's the only player that the majority of fans have heard of, he's getting up there in years and it's not like

he would be getting a ton of coverage starting in a B-League or riding the pine in the Premiership. It’s a big of a sacrifice, but his game isn’t going to get any better and he’s a great draw.

This man has balls
CLEVELAND — A fan wearing a Miami Heat jersey of LeBron James drew the ire of the crowd at a Cleveland Indians game and was escorted out of the ballpark.

Fans in the left-field bleachers chanted obscenities and pointed at the man Wednesday night during the sixth inning of the game between the Indians and New York Yankees. Hundreds of fans joined in before security led the man out of Progressive Field.

As he left, some fans followed him toward the gate with more derisive chants.

James’ recent departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Heat caused a lot of anger in the city.

Many fans were near the left-field foul pole in hopes of catching the 600th home run ball by Alex Rodriguez.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A hacker has discovered a way to force ATMs to disgorge their cash by hijacking the computers inside them.

The attacks demonstrated Wednesday targeted standalone ATMs. But they could potentially be used against the ATMs operated by mainstream banks.

Criminals have long known that ATMs aren’t tamperproof.

There are many types of attacks in use today, ranging from sophisticated to foolhardy: installing fake card readers to steal card numbers, hiding tiny surveillance cameras to capture PIN codes, covering the dispensing slot to intercept money and even hauling the ATMs away with trucks in hopes of cracking them open later.

Computer hacker Barnaby Jack spent two years tinkering in his Silicon Valley apartment with ATMs he bought online. These were standalone machines, the type seen in front of convenience stores, rather than the ones in bank branches.

His goal was to find ways to take control of ATMs by exploiting weaknesses in the computers that run the machines.

He showed off his results here at the Black Hat conference, an annual gathering devoted to exposing the latest computer-security vulnerabilities.

His attacks have wide implications because they affect multiple types of ATMs and exploit weaknesses in software and security measures that are used throughout the industry.

If it had 3G, there's no way the battery would last that long

Whenever you use the wireless on a Kindle, it sucks up energy like any other wireless device. With the wireless off, it’s like an Etch-e-Sketch and can last for ages. If you want 3G, get an iPad. But if you want a better ereader, you can’t top the kindle.

Or at least, that’s how it was with my friend’s Kindle, which is no longer the newest model.

Nah, just not willing to accept what's being told to me at face value, be a critical thinking POW, you can do it.

Actually now that you mention it, I got an e-mail this morning that we snuck into the playoffs. We won our last 3 games and needed another team to lose their last one to make it. We’re playing the team that we beat 23-7 a week ago in the semis and if we win that we’re in the championship game later that day. We’re pretty ragtag and just go out to have fun, our pitcher is at least 100 years old and he sets his dad up behind homeplate every game, and we’re in the running to win it all. THIS IS SOFTBALL.

And if one has a problem using stats to prove a point, then use your eyes.

Isn't this more likely to have to do with our team speed then our 3B coach's aggresiveness?
Well, as it turns out, Foley is actually one of the most aggressive third base coaches in baseball. As a team, Tampa Bay sees their runners go from second to home more often than all but Colorado, St. Louis, and the Dodgers.

by Sveet on Jul 29, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Here are the send rates for the Rays:

Longoria 0.94
Jaso 0.83
Upton 0.73
Rodriguez 0.71
Barty 0.69
Craw 0.65
Brignac 0.6
Zobrist 0.5
Pena 0.2

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I think most people would have Crawford and maybe Upton as the fastest on the team.

And they’re being sent less often than Longoria by far, and Jaso — although that’s a SSS.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that SSS can have a big effect.

Seems like this would be something that years of data might give a much more accurate view

Great article. I still think Foley should be more aggresive though. Those success rates are too high.

by Sveet on Jul 29, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree on both.

As best as I can tell, Longoria is probably our best overall baserunner without ++ speed (i.e. non CC/BJ division.

Nicely done, good of you to point out that fans expect 100% success and will jump on him if guys start getting gunned.

On a team that is prone to walk and strike out, a little aggressiveness should be in order with less balls in play.
