Report: Rays "Favorites" in Adam Dunn Sweepstakes
The rumor...
#Rays acting like don't want as DH only, but one exec said, "they are favorites.
As R.J. Anderson points out, Joel Sherman was the reporter who broke the Scott Kazmir trade so his reports may hold a little bit more weight that others. However, being the favorites for Adam Dunn does not mean the Rays will be the team to acquire his services. After all, the Cliff Lee/Yankees deal was "on the goal line" and when that didn't happen, New York was the likely destination for Dan Haren.
Adam Dunn, the offensive player, fits the Rays profile well. He hits for power, he takes his walks, and he strikes out a lot. Defensively, his numbers show he's been about average this year, but we know better than to put stock in a few months of defensive data. From all accounts - including advanced defensive metrics and scouting reports - Dunn is a terrible defender. While the Rays have an open spot waiting for him as a designated hitter, Dunn is not interested in that - at least he wasn't last week.
I don't want to DH. I don't want to DH. If I have to DH, I'll probably go home. I'm 30, I'm not ready to DH yet, 35, maybe. --CBSSports.com
I don't think the man wants to DH. Meanwhile, if the Rays feel they are getting value in a trade for Dunn and are secure enough to pull the trigger, he has little recourse. He doesn't have a no-trade clause, and I doubt he really wants to go into operation shutdown when he's months away from free agency. On the other hand, according to Sherman, the Rays are "telling people" they are hesitant on Dunn for this very reason. I'm going to blame this on Pat Burrell.
#Rays telling people Dunn's vehement stance against DHing is huge impediment.
One potential fix would be putting Dunn at first base and using Carlos Pena as the DH. This would weaken the team defensively, but since we're getting little-to-no offensive production from the DH spot (sans Matt Joyce), the likely offensive upgrade from Willy Aybar to Dunn would outweight the negative decline from Dunn to Pena. At the same time, I really don't want Adam Dunn in the field during a potential playoff series.
As for a return, we've been hearing the Nationals want a starting pitcher in return. I highly doubt the Rays would give up five-plus years of Wade Davis or six years of Jeremy Hellickson for three months of Adam Dunn and two compensation picks.
I guess we'll know by 4p.m. Saturday. Until then don't believe every thing you hear - or see tweeted.

we know the Nats love Garza, I wonder if they'd like Shields
I’d rather not give up Davis and Hellickson I’m sure is off limits. Another option, maybe they like Sonny and we could maybe build a deal around Sonnanstine and Colome
If Mike Rizzo was smart he'd ask for Shields. Unfortunately for him, Andrew Friedman isn't dumb enough to trade years of Shields for months of Dunn.

I forgot that Shields is cheap
how about Garza, I’ve heard his name come up before. Out of curiosity if you had to give up Niemann or Davis who would it be, not sure which one I’d give up. Maybe Nieman?
Given Niemann's performance in the Big Leagues
the Nats would have to give us more than just 3 months of Adam Dunn.
right, not necessarily for Dunn
but in general which guy would you rather give up. Both good and controlled for awhile.
Wouldnt trade any member of rotation or Hellickson for Dunn
But just talking hypothetical Niemann is under control for longer and is cheaper than Garza. Also Garza is more likely to get you a better return. Wouldn’t be surprised if his name came up in trades after the season assuming he doesn’t re-up long term.

the only way we move Garza I'd imagine would be for a guy like Gonzalez
if we can somehow convince them to take Garza + Pena for AGon
I can't imagine the team giving up 2 current starters to get one in return.
They’ve said just recently that they’d rather move prospects then guys on their 25 man. As for your question above, I’d probably prefer to give up Davis. Even though Niemann is supposedly the worse of the two pitchers sabermetrically, I can’t really argue with the fact that Niemann always gets the job done, and doesn’t look like he’s going to get any worse moving forward.
On an unrelated note, if it’s me, I’m really gun-shy about trading Garza. I think he still has some development ahead of him and he’s going to get better. The no-hitter is not an isolated event IMO, he flirted with it two years in a row and got one this year. Now if there’s no chance of securing him long term, or if someone blows my socks off during the offseason because they see the same thing I do, then yeah I trade. But I wouldn’t try to move him at all for any reason simply to get better now or next year.

McGee maybe?
Anything more than him would be overpaying imo…
This seems like an all around terrible idea.
If he won’t DH then the upgrade is minimal. Pena has really already turned it around at the plate and his glove is leagues butter then Dunn. Then they also want a starting pitcher? I’m sorry but giving any SP of our current rotation or Hellickson is not worth it for a rental. If they scrap together a deal without that then the experiment may be worth it. Better convince the guy to DH sometimes though.
playing defense
I would think we could give him enough starts in the field to keep him happy. Let him play 1st once in a while, let Carlos DH. Hell, I’d rather have him roam around in RF once in a while than having Kapler in the lineup.
I wouldn’t give up Davis, certainly not Hellickson, but Sonny and maybe a Colome and lesser talent – I think it’s worth it.
"In 2009, Dunn was rated the worst fielder in the Major Leagues. He was rated -35 in Ultimate Zone Rating."
Disagree
He was horrible in 2009. He was bad, even for him. But he’s not -35 bad. If a compromise can be made where he gets minority time at 1B and he’s happier that way, then I’m OK with getting him.
If he insists on playing 1B via majority share however, or tries to plea time in the outfield, then yeah, I’d leave him for someone else to deal with.
So I should just change my sig to

lineup w Dunn
Would look really fantastic against RHP. A matchup against the Rangers and everyone except Lee would be pretty favorable, same with the Twins. The Yanks are gonna throw two lefties, but Pettitte is tougher against RHB anyway. Same with the ChiSox and Danks/Buehrle.
Luke Scott please!
I’d think he’d be going for cents on the dollar compared to Dunn and he’s AL East proven.
Totally agree with Luke Scott

But who knows how available he is. I think most people here would agree that Scott would be ideal, but are the O’s really shopping him that aggressively?
Is Luke Scott even an upgrade at this point?
Other than the upgrade over Kapler? Seems much more marginal to me.
Unless someone goes down with an injury between now and the end of the year, we’re going to end up trading one of our six starters for cents on the dollar. Personally, I don’t have a huge problem with trading Davis or Niemann for a rental that provides a decent upgrade, which is what Dunn would be, presuming he’d be happy enough if he’s only DHing 1/2 to 2/3rds of the games.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

Why does everyone keep saying that we should build a deal around Sonny?
He’s not even close to good enough to be a focal point on a trade. If I were the Nationals, I wouldn’t give up Dunn for Sonny in Colome. I wouldn’t even consider it.
He'd have to be starting again, and proving that he can start, before he gets value again. As a long reliever, he's not worth anything. Teams don't trade for long relievers.

That's what I'm saying
He doesn’t have a lot of value at this point. He’s someone a scout would have to heavily assess, because a lot of MLB starters would be thrown out of our rotation like he was. And he hasn’t been pitching lately, so that’d be hard to do.
waiting game
Supposedly they wanted Hudson and something else from the Sox. Sonny isn’t Hudson, probably, but he has proven to be a successful starter in the AL East. But if the other prospects we would give up (McGee, Torres, Colome, guys like that), are better than the secondary guys they were asking for from the White Sox, then I do think that’s a plausible offer.
Our huge advantage over everyone is that most teams want young pitching, and we have an abundance of that at the AA and A+ level. You throw in a Sonny, who would be a decent 4th starter in the NL east in my opinion, and that’s something Rizzo has to consider on Saturday afternoon.
I think if you start throwing in guys like McGee or Moore than the deal comes closer to fruition
But I just don’t Sonny pushing any deal over the edge. But hey, since they value E-Jax so much, I guess you never know…
Moore's ETA
are we thinking he’s a one level at most a year guy? Might he get bumped to AA for a couple starts this season, AA all next year, AAA in 2012, maybe Sept callup in 2012?
He seems to start off so slow it would be nice to challenge him a little in AA at the end of this year.
That seems to be the MO of the front office.
Should arrive just in time for Niemann, Shields, Garza, and/or Davis departure. Who knows though?

McGee: 24, 2.67 FIP, 10.7 K/9, 3.5 BB/9
Torres: 22, 3.44 FIP, 9.4 K/9, 4.3 BB/9
McGee is a couple years older, but he’s bigger and it’s his first full season back from TJ. I wouldn’t be shocked to see both in the bullpen, but I’d expect it to be Torres more than McGee.

Unless there are trades
Shields, Garza, Niemann will all still be under contract.
Which goes to my point about selling for pennies on the dollar. The disadvantage of stockpiling one position is that everyone else can see you’re not getting full value there, and they’ll try to trade for the value upgrade rather than the value of the player. It’s how people get ripped on business deals all the time.

Wonder what he had to say about Joe Inglett the other night
Pitched a scoreless frame while hitting 52mph on the gun.
Whatever it was
It probably wasn’t nearly as funny as him getting angry at everyone on the BBTN set for making fun of Kapler

Oh I know
But his complete inability to make light of what was an amusing event because it was Kapler hitting was ridiculous

Jake McGee for Adam Dunn?
I would be comfortable with this
by StylezMcKoolaid on Jul 29, 2010 11:06 PM EDT reply actions
If we get Dunn, do we drop Longo back to 4th or something to preven the LLL streak
Or just leave it alone?
PIZZA?!?
I would assume so
With Dunn’s OBP skills coupled with the fact that if he were 4, he would be followed by 2 (if not 3) straight lefties.

Doesn't pulling Hellickson after 37 pitches seem fishy to you?
I know he wasn’t traded yet, but maybe they just gave a team a sample today and that team didn’t want him throwing too much for a trade tomorrow?
i thinking you are looking to deep into it
they pulled him to limit his innings

And I think you are too quick to take official team statements at face value
Pulling him in that situation means SOMETHING is going on, wheter its an imminent promotion or a trade or a combination of both remains to be seen. Look at his game logs and show me another time this has happened (that he wasn’t getting lit up). Or better yet show me where the Rays decided on a similar course of action with another pitching prospect at this time of year.

This weekend is the kind of series true baseball fans dream about
Two best teams in baseball…both playing good ball lately…trade deadline looming…HOF player chasing a milestone. Its not October, but if you can’t get up for this you don’t have a pulse.

It's not like he is logging a ton of innings. He has done 152 before
In one month when Durham’s season is done, he will be up with us and be around that number.
Last time I checked
Pena wasn’t doing do spectacular at 1B this year anyway.

Dunn is the one player I will not listen to rational judgement on...
I want him. I want him hard. And I don’t care what he costs. The fact that this guy has only been an all-star once, goes to expose the whole BS process. How has he not participated in a homerun derby? Hee Seop Choi! You have got to be kidding me.
(Yes, I’m being a bit fanatical, but the thought of Dunn in a Rays uni makes me think immoral thoughts.)
He's never played on a winner

I don't want Dunn unless there's no other option
For reasons already stated before. And I certainly wouldn’t give up any of the starting rotation or Hellickson for him.
If we can get him for cheap, I wouldn’t mind it too much, but I’d rather not compromise the team’s defense for someone who is essentially Carlos Pena II (or, if we’re unlucky, Pat the Other Bat).
Nicknames for Benoit-Soriano? How about ‘one and done’ describing the length of time they’re likely to be Rays

Hurm
On the other hand, according to Sherman, the Rays are “telling people” they are hesitant on Dunn for this very reason.
Could management be using this as leverage to get a better deal?

At this point...
…the team “needs” are DH and RP (not named Cormier and Choate), but at what cost?
Any chance we see Torres or McGee take the place of Choate this season?
Hellickson taking Cormier’s spot?
I think all 3 are untouhable cause they could help us this year in the pen (when rosters expand, if not before)
Sonny has trade value out there even though pitching in the pen…teams gladly took Hammel and Talbot to put in their rotations when they weren’t starters for us.
That leaves DH…if Dunn doesn’t want to, aren’t Scott and Willingham under control for another year? Those seem better fits if needed to play D.
On second thought
How bout that Hinske guy…that would book us the trip to the WS with his track record. Doubt Atlanta will deal with us though after we poached Aybar and Soriano from them though!
They didn't want Aybar with his drug problems and the fact he beats his wife
Hinske wouldn’t improve this team at all. And I disagree with everyone saying Sonny has much trade value. In a trade for Scott or Willingham, maybe, but I still have my doubts as to much he actually adds to the trade package. With Adam Dunn, I think the Nat’s will look for more quality players than Sonny. Sure, we only get Dunn for 60 days, but he’s one of the better offensive players in the league, and he has Type A status at the end of the year.
Who do they have in their rotation besides Strasburg whom is way better than Sonny?
they need SPs, Sonny could be like the next Hammel. If he gets traded to an NL team, I fully expect around a 4.00 ERA.

agree and disagree
Hinske wouldn’t help this team…the joke was he’s been with the red sox (07) us (08) and the Yanks (09) the last 3 years and each team went to the WS. Will it happen for the 4th year with the Braves?
We’ve took a chance on Aybar and have got more from him than the Braves ever got from Switzer.
Sonny DOES hold trade value, but agree not in a deal for Dunn.
As for Type A compensation, we already will be receiving picks for CC and Soriano (Pena?), would you give up a premier prospect for 2+ months of Dunn and compensation?
In 2008
I wanted us to get Barry Bonds for the stretch.I will say the same here about Dunn.We are in the hunt,it is time to load the gun.But don’t use to much ammo we already have.
