Hanley for Hellickson, Brignac, Moore, & Barnese?
In an ESPN article (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/news/story?id=5422673), Christina Kahrl speculates what it might take to land some of the biggest stars in baseball. One of the deals has the Rays acquiring Hanley Ramirez for Jeremy Hellickson, Reid Brignac, Matt Moore, and Nick Barnese. She also proposes a trade that would send Evan Longoria to the Angels for a heap of prospects (NOT inlcuding Mike Trout), but I'm not even dignifying that one with a comment. Here's what she says about the Hanley trade - FTA:
SS Hanley Ramirez to the Tampa Bay Rays for RHP Jeremy Hellickson, SS Reid Brignac, LHP Matt Moore and RHP Nick Barnese.
Nobody can offer as much good stuff in a single package as the Rays can, so why not go after the best rising talent in the game? He's already inked for 2011-14 for $57.5 million, so he'd be the foundation of their lineup for years to come, producing True Averages around .320 through the last year, when he'll only be 30.But it'll cost, and only the Rays might be able to afford the exchange, giving up a pair of five-star prospects and four of their top-10 kids. Hellickson's dominating at Triple-A and certain to star in a big league rotation as soon as he's called up, while Moore's a power lefty at Class A armed with consistent low-90s heat, supplemented with a change and curve that can be plus pitches. Brignac would be a fine replacement for HanRam -- and he's a couple of years removed from arbitration, let alone free agency. Barnese is a teammate of Moore's who adds an element of fun as far as being one of the most aggressive strike-throwers you'll find at any level -- with 16 hit batsmen against just 22 walks in 111 2/3 IP, he makes a point of owning the inside corner, but he has the stuff to have things his way.
Would you take this trade for the Rays?

As tough as it would be to part with four good players
And make a trade where you almost certainly lose on pure numbers, I suspect the value added for Hanley over the next four years would be greater than the value negated by losing those four, especially considering our depth. We don’t NEED any of those guys if we have Hanley, and that’s the kind of deal that adds three wins a year on the hard part of the marginal value curve.

BTW
That proposed Longoria trade is awful. The rest of them are at least somewhat realistic, but Kahrl has 5the Angels giving up a bunch of crap for Longoria. I know I don’t think as highly of Conger, who’s very injury-prone and hasn’t really proved the bat, as some do, but she must really be overvaluing the Angels’ prospects. The deal proposed for Lincecum, for instance, includes players about 10x better than those included in the Longoria proposal.

Mike Trout
would be a MUST include in that trade. I can’t believe she omitted him from that trade… although she is a girl…

What was the Angels deal
Longoria for something like Trout / Conger / Richards / Wood / More??
while stupid given Longoria’s contract, seems like it could bring the needed value
No trout
Longo for Conger, Wood, Bourjos, Richard and Martinez. Basically a busted prospect, three fringe top 100 guys and a high upside high risk arm, a level or two down from guys like Colome.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
To be fair, I think Richards is borderline top 50 (he is in mine), and Bourjos is soundly in my top 100 (as is Conger)
is a stupid trade, because Longo is signed to such a good deal, but if we take contracts out of it I could see that (if they switched FMM for Trout)
Conger wouldn't be in my top 100
But I realize I’ve always rated him lower than most. I think people overrate him because of his name and his background, but the guy can’t stay on the field, is a subpar defender and not a good enough bat to play at a position other than catcher.

He may not be a great defensive catcher, but at this point it looks like he sticks, and he has a good all around offensive skillset
although I understand that someone with injuries at catcher is a worry, I just don’t like dabbling too much in judging if someone is truly injury prone or not, I try not to put much stock in it, sometimes to a fault.
He has good power, decent contact ability, and a good approach at the plate. The injuries, even if they don’t continue, have done one thing, they have slowed his development and he is getting older.
I would rather give up Davis than Hellickson but I still do it.
This would leave the Rays with Longoria, Ramirez, Upton, Jennings, Joyce, Zobrist all under control for awhile and the rotation will be the 5 we have now and by the time we have to move Garza most likely Torres, McGee, or someone else will be ready to fill in the 5th starter role. Yes it is a lot but like Brick said we have the depth to pull off this move and Hanley is young and talented enough that I would do it.
My favorite part
Out of all the stats you can point to to describe Hanley’s talent (not even including advanced stats), she points to batting average. Nothing about slugging, doubles, steals, homeruns, runs. This lady is truly and idiot.
To make matters worse, she isn’t even remotely attractive. If they aren’t going to have a clue about what they’re talking about, at least make them hot.

I might be wrong, but True Average should account for those things as I believe it is BP's version of wOBA

This is correct. TAv is their wOBA. Used to be called EqA.

While this proposed trad would be a stretch (I'd still consider)
Would people consider Davis + Brignac + Colome + Wilking + Cruz
I think I’d do that.

DAMMIT
The best part is that this is an Insider story, meaning people are PAYING MONEY for that idiotic trade idea.

To be fair...
they were stupid enough to pay for “Insider”, so they don’t deserve their money anymore.
I think Insider is a great deal
For like $3 a month, you get access to a whole shitload of content across all sports, plus they send you the magazine for free, which while not great, is perfectly good bathroom reading material. While their baseball insider stuff isn’t great, it’s a lot more solid for basketball and football.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
The recruiting stuff isn't bad either.
While not as good as Scout or Rivals, it still provides some decent writeups and the like.
Tempting, but no
If Hanley were about 4 years younger and signed to a 7-year deal for less than his actual worth, I’d take it.
