Brief Series Preview of Texas Rangers; Carlos Pena in the Starting Line-up Tonight

First two games are 7:10 PM starts; Wednesday's game is a 1:10 PM start.

Monday, August 16: Cliff Lee (2.54 FIP) vs. David Price (3.48 FIP)

Tuesday, August 17: Tommy Hunter (5.18 FIP) vs. Matt Garza (4.44 FIP)

Wednesday, August 18: Derek Holland (5.06 FIP) vs. James Shields (4.54 FIP)

If you're not watching tonight, you're not a fan of fine baseball; on paper, it's one the best pitching match-ups of the season. This series looks to be a test for the Rays. Even with Nelson Cruz currently on the DL, this is a dangerous Texas team and one that the Rays stand a decent chance of facing in the post-season.

***

So far, we know that Carlos Pena is in the line-up tonight, but there has been no announcement about the corresponding roster move. Gabe Kapler is not in the starting line-up tonight against a lefty, though, so it seems likely that the move relates to him. The other likely candidate to get demoted, Sean Rodriguez, is in the line-up. More news should be coming soon.

Update: Gabe Kapler has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right ankle sprain. He will be eligible to return around the time rosters expand on September 1st.

Hard to imagine Texas's lineup being much weaker than this.

Kinsler and Cruz on the DL, Vlad Guerrero in a spectacular slump… hope the Rays can tale advantage this week.

He has turned into a defensive butcher.

Unfortunately the Rangers are probably stuck with him at third because they already made him switch positions against his will twice (from 2B to SS so they could bring up Kinsler, and from SS to 3B so they could bring up Andrus).

Young moved to SS for Soriano not Kinsler

He's awful at defense when playing shortstop.

He moved to an easier position .If Bartlett moved to second I would suspect he’d be above average.

He's been pretty bad at 3B lately, too.

I don’t have any UZR stats to back this up but quite a few balls have gobbled him up that should be fairly easy to handle.

Kapler’s name is not on the list of extra players. Sounds like he gets a copy of the home game.

Can someone explain in 200 words or less, how the use of FIP

doesn’t differentiate more between Garza and Shields. Shields is really only .1 worse than Garza using that measure?

Not a slam on Big Game. Just a question because it would seem that fielding independent pitching would reflect that Garza has performed more than .1 than Shields. I surely must be missing something in the calculation.

by ValricoBrian on Aug 16, 2010 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

Correct, and in any other season we would be hearing about Garza's HR issues

But Davis and Shields have saved Garza from the conversation. Also whats astonishing is Shields BABIP of .341 because remember that doesn’t account for all the HR’s.

On a related note

Is there an xFIP that adjusts for career HR/FB ratio rather than the league average? Seems like it would be a lot more useful.

by sattp on Aug 16, 2010 4:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Because HR/FB isn't something that stabilizes so quickly.

It doesn’t stabilize within a normal season’s worth of pitching. In other words, there can be a heck of a long time before his HR/FB number comes down, but in the long run – as in, looking at his overall contract and value – it will.

I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

by Sandy Kazmir on Aug 16, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I'm not trying to justify creating another stat

But it seems like a logical statistic. Shields isn’t a league average HR/FB guy and it would account for any regression he is due. Am I missing something or does this make a good deal more sense than assuming everyone’s FB are equally likely to be homers?

by sattp on Aug 16, 2010 4:41 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The problem is there's not really any proof that some guys are more homer-prone than others.

SSS and all there is, but how do you hold for talent changes versus luck? I.E. at what point can we call someone’s career rate their talent level? And as their skills erode/change how do we account for that?
