How Exciting Are The Tampa Bay Rays?: A Statistical Approach
In an earlier post, Steve mentioned that the Rays were one of the most exciting teams to watch. While my gut agrees with this, that isn't good enough: I need statistics to back me up. If we're going to quantify this assertion, first we need to identify what makes a team "exciting."
Here are the factors I identified:
- Fastball Velocity: Hard throwing pitchers are always more exciting.
- Swinging Strike%: The most exciting thing a pitcher can do.
- Stolen Bases: A lot of fun to see.
- Home Runs: Nothing needs to be said.
- Triples: Triples are even more exciting than homers because with triples, not only is there the excitement of the hit, but also the excitement when you realize the player is going for third.
- Ultimate Zone Rating: Awesome defensive plays are awesome.
- Batting Average: Hits always draw roars from the crowd.
- Wins: The most important thing.
In combining these elements, I think I've managed to successfully create the most useless formula in all of baseball history. Let's take a look at how the Rays grade out.
Each of the MLB teams are ranked by their ability in each category using their z-score. For those not as statistically inclined, a z-score is essentially a measure of how far above or below average a number is. A z-score of 1 basically means in the top one-sixth, while a z-score of -1 means in the bottom one-sixth. The z-scores are then added to make a composite team "excite" score.
| Team | 3B | HR | SB | Fastball Velocity | SwStr% | UZR | W | Batting Average | Team Score |
| Rays | 0.6 | -0.1 | 2.8 | 1.6 | 0.6 | 1.6 | 1.4 | -0.7 | 7.8 |
| Reds | 0.7 | 0.9 | -0.2 | -0.1 | 0.1 | 1.4 | 1 | 1.3 | 5.1 |

Well, this turned out to be a surprise. I expected the Rays to do well on the Excite-o-Meter, but certainly not to lead the league. The "excite" scores correlated fairly well with winning, giving an R-squared of 72%, showing that there's a fairly strong relationship between winning and being exciting, but there are other things that factor into it too.
The Rays graded out as above-average in all categories barring home runs and batting average. The category that really sets the Rays apart is stolen bases, simply because so many teams don't even try to steal or have just one player who's a threat on the bases. Every player contributes with the Rays, giving the Rays a whopping 2.8 z-score at stealing, the highest of any team in any category. Probably the most surprising revelation was that the Rays pitching staff as a whole has excellent fastball velocity, which David Price is probably solely responsible for. Overall, it looks like Steve was right: the Rays truly are an exciting team to watch.

I dunno if UZR is a good indicator of "exciting defensive plays"
There are some players who make more exciting catches but don’t necessarily grade out that well in UZR

It's probably the best way of measuring exciting defensive plays

He just gets excited when they lose.
If you replace wins for losses, you’d be on the right track to find his perfect excitement score.
Nice!
If we consider ourselves a master team then we have to act like a master team, not degenerates.

A few points or possible additions:
-Long plate appearances can be exciting when they get to 3-2 with the bases loaded or the like, but more often than not teams that see more pitches are a little more boring IMO. You may want to factor in P/PA as well. This might hurt the Rays, but will likely hurt alot of other top teams as well (outside of the Twins maybe).
-In a similar vein, long games that drag are boring. A factor that should be in play IMO is the length of the games. This could help or hurt us, I’m not sure.
-Pitching changes add commercial breaks and make a game take longer and more boring.
-The most exciting thing in any sport are game-changing plays. Plays that flip the balance of the game on their head (either way). Perhaps a measure for close games or big WPA swings might be a nice addition.
All in all, this was a cool post and great idea. You’ve got pretty much every factor for excitement covered, now we just need to add the “boring factor.” Either way it’s nice to get a post that’s a little different than the normal gamut of DRB posts. Rec’d

Actually I eliminated a lot of the criteria that I originally had because I felt like they were more a measure of not being boring to see than being exciting
Things like zone% (Kaz’s starts spring to mind) and FPCT were originally there but I pulled them out because I felt like higher values were less painful to see, not necessarily more exciting
I have often wondered about tracking long at bats
Figuring that 6 pitches can be considered “normal” I have wondered if there is anyway to determine the number of 7 pitch or grreated AB’s…but I suppose as a proxy average pitches per plate appearance might be adequate to give the same impression.
In a way this is similar to a “power ranking” type calculation. Sure it’s subjective, and in the end “useless”. But “useless” is really in the eye of the beholder. One can say ALL stats other than the absolute basics of wins/losses and runs scored/runs allowed are fluff. But then for us number geeks there’s be a definite lack of something…
All in all, a fun idea.
Great stuff!
One question, though. I noticed there’s a column for Batting Average. I can guess the appeal for that, but I was wondering what your rationale was.
from Cubs Stats and Twitter @BradleyWoodrum
without batting average we would be so far ahead that SF1's head would explode
and for sake of keeping our GDT excitement score high we can’t lose SF1.
You hit the nail on the head
Plus hits are more fun to see than walks
why aren't strikeouts included for pitchers
i know swinging strikes takes some of that into consideration but isnt a called stike 3 more exciting than a swinging strike 1? i do think this is a pretty cool idea though…

Strikeouts are more exciting
But youd have to disect the innings, which ones would be more exciting? A bases loaded 2 outs strikeout is pretty exciting.. Also a strikeout in the last 2 IP of a 1 run game would be more exciting compared to a first inning strikeout
Called strike 3s are quite often a result of bad calls by umps
Plus swinging strikes in things like 1-1 counts are nice too
If striking out was included as an offensive stat
this team would come with a warning label

Any way to iron out ballpark factors?
The Rockies are going to get more triples and the Red Sox are going to have more home runs because of their stadium dimensions.
Also factoring in some kind of clutch run-scoring would help. But still, this is a fun use of stats.

I thought about that to be honest
But I ended up concluding that it’s no less exciting to see a homer whether it’s aided by the ballpark or not
The Reds are way undervalued here...
They get +9000 just for having Jonny Gomes.

Agreed, and don't forget this:
"I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em.
"I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals."
And another +4000 for Brandon Phillips and his trash talking.

According to KK
The most exciting part of the game is watching the fans and ballboys catch foulballs.
This team is exciting... David Price even made Epic Fail

5.5 (8.8-3.3)

So if you use your internal measures of excitement and it rates out above 5.5 you're doing good. Yesterday was a definite 6.7 (would have been higher but game-hour completion rating was an abysmal -2.8)

Can we break this down even further
and build it out to incorporate how exciting a player or pitcher is? This is an important thing to me, I need to know who’s jersey to buy based on this.

Fangraph's Carson Cistulli came up with a system of rating pitchers called "NERD"
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/introducing-nerd/
Rating position players is doable. I’ll get to something like that in the coming months perhaps.
I feel like this needs to be expanded for a point of comparison into every day things.
Like, is mowing the lawn -2.4.
Having sex 6.9 (I’m unfamiliar with the practice and assume it is less exciting than a Rays game)
Freezey Lappers 12.4?

This is a pretty cool way of looking at things.....
….as evidenced by the 59 replies in the ~9 hours since you posted! I like it. One thing it got me thinking about is that in your current version all “exciting” categories are weighted the same. Did you consider weighting some categories higher than others? For example, HR’s are quite a bit more exciting then fastball velocity (my view at least). If one were to weight HR’s highest and Fastball Velocity Lowest, for example, the Yanks would probably close the gap markedly (depending on relative weights of course).
Anyway, good post. You’ve got everyone thinking about stuff they usually wouldn’t….
