He did say that 2 runs wouldn't be enough in the GDT

That was a HUGE win. Boston needed a sweep this weekend, and now the best they can do is gain only 1 game with 3 more being crossed off the calendar.

And BJ was the 1st hero to tie it back up.

But Boston – wtf were they doing? Buchholz concerned about Pena running? Why did Drew catch Joyce’s foul out instead of letting it fall? Why was Buchholz out there to start the 8th? A bunch of questionable moves all around on their part.

Thanks!

by tampa_edski on Aug 28, 2010 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Several things, one at a time

1. SF1 continually insisted we’d be swept, and was more than equivocal regarding it.
2. Him saying it would take ‘more than 2’ to win doesn’t change that. If I threw enough shit on the wall, some of it would stick.
3. BJ has been very good in the 2nd half indeed.
4. Bucholz would have done himself better to focus on the batter at the plate.
5. Drew made no mistake,,,its easy to play monday morning qb there, but there’s no telling what joyce would have done with new life…with the lead you take the out.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 28, 2010 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

My SF Snark and associated remoarks will be ignored...

LOL.

Agree that second guessing Drew’s catch is easy, but I questioned the wisdom as soon as he caught it. A lame Pena scores on that catch 99.999% of the time. The way Buchholtz is throwing the chances of getting Joyce out with a second chance are better than preventing the runner tagging up there.

It is a grey area, and sure MJ could have stroked a hit to tie the game, or even a 2 run bomb, if he’s given another pitch. But those outcomes seem less likely than what happened.

I’m glad that Drew let his instincts take over – it (along with Buchholtz’ poor PO attempt) changed the game dramatically.

Buchholz has a bad habit of being concerned with the runner

At least I’ve read that about him from Red Sox writers

Mike Napoli claimed on waivers by unidentified AL team. Absolutely obliterates LH. Can play C or 1B, but obviously would most likely DH vs. LH. Yes and yes, if it can be done.

by Jonah Keri on Aug 29, 2010 12:09 AM EDT reply actions

Id definitely take him

But don’t know what we’d do roster-wise come postseason, or next season for that matter. Would he be a FA at the end of the year?

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 29, 2010 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Makes $3.6M this year

Arb-eligible at year’s end. Free agent after 2012.

So with likely arb raise after ~25 HR season, best bet would be to trade him at season’s end/

Non-Tender?

even if he’s bumped up to 5mil, that’s still cheap for a lefty-mashing, 30HR candidate who can be C/1B/DH for this next year. Proven power-hitter? Yes please.

by AUSSIExRULES on Aug 29, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not optimistic.

“Yes and yes, if it can be done.” Exactly my thought when I saw the notice, but what chance is there that Boston would let him slip to the Rays? Not only would they be unlikely to allow the Rays to have a shot at him, but they could use him as well given their injuries at 1B and catcher. And for that matter, consider the other AL teams that might want a chance to get him.

Still, yes and yes, if it can be done.

by bobr on Aug 29, 2010 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

On another note

That Kalish catch was insane. He could just as easily have broken his wrist and allowed an in-the park homer. I don’t often applaud plays by the opponent, but I had to on that one, as a fan of baseball.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 29, 2010 12:30 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that was perfectly played

Though it makes me hate the Sox even more. Even when their best players go down, their reserves step in and don’t miss a beat. Where did they get that depth?

by MagicMark on Aug 29, 2010 1:03 AM EDT reply actions

One more thing that might get overlooked

I like that Maddon was aggressive tonight and put Soriano out there with the game tied. He’s been reluctant all year long to use him in non-save situations.

Meanwhile, the Sox kept Paps on the bench and put out a less reliable reliever instead.

Almost a mirror-image of the Yanks game when they threw their closer out with the game tied late and we didn’t. It seems Maddon learned his lesson.

by Landlord on Aug 29, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I do not understand this statement.

The Rays have scored the 3rd most runs in the AL, and per game are barely behind Boston. I do recognize that there have been quite a few games in which the Rays have not hit or scored much, but they have scored enough to be tied for the best record in baseball, and that is not like saying that the Padres have scored enough to lead its division. It means the Rays have scored a lot of runs.

Because of the style of their offense, the failures stand out more starkly. It is based on getting on base, which has a high correlation to runs scored, not high BAs which has a low correlation but which may seem to score runs more consistently and have fewer stinko games. It is also based on an aggressive running game that also highlights the failures while perhaps hiding the successes.

For example, I attended the Friday game. They could not hit Lester, but the run that did score came about due to an error probably caused by Bartlett’s hustle to 1B and aggressive base running on at least one of the two wild pitches. A second run was lost by a running play but its possibility was set up by a walk and steal. People will remember Upton being thrown out and the Rodriguez goof in being thrown out at 3B, but given how Lester was pitching, the Rays’ best chance to win was by patience and aggressive base running. The chances of stringing together 3 hits or hitting a home run were pretty remote. That is not because the Rays struggle to score but because Lester is an elite pitcher who was on his game.

In any case, the Rays do not struggle to score runs, at least not in the sense that their offense is inadequate. It is somewhat erratic at times, and it would be nice to diversify it by having a couple of contact hitters for particular situations, but overall, it is a high scoring team.
