Official September Call-ups Thread.
Check back often for any breaking roster moves as we near the deadline for September call-ups.
**UPDATE**
r_j_anderson 08/27/10 Tampa Bay Rays transferred LHP J.P. Howell from the 15-Day disabled list to the 60-Day disabled list.
This should open up a spot on the 40 for someone (Hawpe?).
***UPDATE 3:57pm***

im confused.
what was jp doing on the 15 day dl?
go away percival
By keeping him on the DL (whether it be 15 or 60) and the 40-man roster...
The Rays are able to swap him for a player of the same position after the September 1st deadline and have them be eligible for the playoff roster.

that's what I meant
he was supposed to come off about now…if he stays on the DL it means another fielder can be added to the post season roster. Or so I understand…
We don't know yet.

So, can the Rays add Hawpe to the 40 man roster (and thus the 25 man roster) after today's game without having to make a corrosponding 25 man move?
Teams don’t technically have to set the roster at 25 until before their next game, right?
If John Jaso somehow strikes out, it means you didn’t do your job right as an umpire.
by raysrule44 on Jul 9, 2010 8:37 PM CDT
probably not Aybar as he hits lefties better than righties
DJ and Hawpe are redundant – maybe its DJ to the DL. Or maybe a reliever to the DL, so that the loser of the DJ/Hawpe battle goes back to the minors when Balfour returns. Reliever not all that needed since McGee, Hellickson, etc will be coming up for Sept callups anyway.

Putting JP on the 60 day has nothing to do with Hawpe
Here’s how i see it—Hawpe up today—Sonny down
After Sep 1 McGee up and gets playoff spot with JP move
Remember the move of a player to the 60 day, has to be replaced by a player of the same position
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
i don't see how you bring up McGee for playoff roster before Hellickson
lefty schmeifty, Hellickson is your ace in the hole and emergency playoff starter if need be
You can have them both.
All the J.P. thing means is that McGee doesn’t have to be on the 25-man roster tonight.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 31, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
But if they both come up post-September 1, how do you get them both on?

Easy.
Sonnanstine down, one of them up. Sonnanstine comes back in a week, no option used.
Then the other up for Howell.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 31, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
So then the Sonnanstine move would have to happen after the game before midnight, right?

Yep.
Players have to be either on the 25-man, DLed, or have a DL exception waiting to happen (i.e. Howell, maybe Kapler/Lobaton).
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 31, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions
So no Sonnanstine on the post-season roster
Shields Price Garza Niemann rotation
Bullpen of Hellickson, McGee, Balfour, Wheeler, Qualls, Choate, Benoit, Soriano
with Davis and Cormier dis-activated.
12 pitchers? Does that seem right?

Lobaton has to be up tonight by midnight for that to work.
Otherwise him to the 60D just clears a 40-man spot, not a playoff spot.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 31, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Kapler for Jennings would work

I think you put cormier (if possible) or Sonny on DL, Bring up Hawpe
then send either Hawpe or DJ back down when Balfour comes back. Hellickson is called up today to be on playoff roster to replace JP. McGee, Jennings, etc brought up as roster fillers for September
Neither Hawpe or DJ can be sent back down.
They’d have to be DFA’d.

SOooo..
If someone is called up today, they can play in the Post-Season. If they are called up tomorrow during the September Call-Ups then they are not eligible for the Playoffs.
But if a player goes on the 60-day DL, then the team can put the player on the Playoff roster regardless when he gets called up ala David Price.

So I don't have to ask here, has anyone written on eligibility lately?
If I read it right, eligible players are those on the 25-man, as well one additional person on the 40-man for each person on the 60 day DL?
At this point in the season does it matter if you put someone on a 15 day or 60 day.
Also, doesn’t MLB frown on “wrongly” designating folks to the DL?
I ran into some unclear language about this.
I don’t think it matters, but not 100% sure.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 31, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks. That helps.
So anyone on the DL and anyone on the 25 man at midnight tonight is eligible. As well as one person on the 40 man for every person on the 60 day.

Key with Lobaton is timing.
If he comes up tonight and goes on the DL, then he can be used as a pawn to get Hawpe on the playoff roster. Tomorrow? Just to get Rocco on the 40-man.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 31, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions
if you are bringing lobaton up just to get hawpe on the roster
why not just call up hawpe?? Why waste a move…hawpe being called up tonight makes him eligible too right? Seems like an extra step not needed
Because they need two 40-man spots and they only have one open.
DLing Lobaton means they lose nobody on waivers and doesn’t require much more paperwork.

so as of now, the Rays still have playoff roster flexibility by sending down sonny
still have Howell’s spot which can go to Hellickson, and Rocco could replace Kapler if he made his way to the 60 day.
McGee will probably get some seasoning in September and challenge for a spot in the 2011 pen? That’s at least the look of it now.
by raysfaninminnesota on Aug 31, 2010 11:23 PM EDT reply actions
Just to clarify for me-
Howell’s spot could go to any pitcher. Kapler’s could go to any fielder.
So we have today’s 25 man plus 2 players to fill those spots I mention above?
