Carlos Pena to 15-Day Disabled List; Dale Thayer Called Up from Triple-A
From Marc Topkin:
Rays place 1B Carlos Pena (right foot) on 15-day DL, recall RHP Dale Thayer
There's no word yet on how serious then injury is or how it occurred, but at least it's not another injury to Pena's hand (especially considering that Kevin Youkilis is now out for the entire year with a hand injury). In Pena's stead, Dan Johnson should see the majority of playing time at first base, although I wouldn't be surprised if Sean Rodriguez or Ben Zobrist cameoed there against left-handed pitchers.
A few days after placing Andy Sonnanstine on the DL and going with a six-man bullpen, the Rays have decided to call up Dale Thayer to provide some more bullpen depth. For more on Thayer, see FreeZo's notes on him in the article below.

Diagnosis
The problem is a slight tear in the plantar fascia ligament on the bottom of his right foot, an injury he said doesn’t require any kind of repair. “Now it’s all about how much pain can I tolerate, and I’m tolerating it pretty good right now,” said Peña, who was walking relatively normal.

Having torn my plantar fascia before.
It hurts like no other. It’s the ligament that runs from the big toe to the ankle. Every step that you take stretches it and believe me, it will linger.
It took a good 6 months before I didn’t feel pain. Probably a good 9 before I felt 100% walking on it normal.

Tore it playing travel ball, actually.
I was playing first and had to jump to grab an errant throw. Landed on the base funny and thought I broke my foot.

CC definitely needs a day off with all these games on turf in a row

CC told you that?
If he came out and said he needs rest, I’m cool with that. Otherwise, he can rest all he wants next year when he’s playing for the Yankees…
Even if he didn't specifically say it
He’s talked a number of times before about how the turf does mess with his knees. Personally, I think it would be neat if he were healthy down the stretch, and if that means he has to take a day off now and then, that’s fine.

Fair enough
I remember CC generally being the most vocal about having issues with the turf, and I’m assuming he wouldn’t talk about as much as he does it if it weren’t a legitimate issue.

I never meant to say it was exclusively an issue with CC
Just that it’s tough to play on turf 90 games a year and that if he needs a day off that’s fine by me.

I can understand that
I’d just to see our best lineup out there at all times if possible (i.e. one w/o Kapler). Glad to see he’s giving Joyce the start vs. lefties, how about Brignac? Could play Zobrist in RF, SRod in LF, and Reid at 2B.
I hear they needed to make a separate roster move for Thayer's mustache.

Only if he's wearing really uncomfortably short jorts and flip-flops.

wow...look at that photo TB 15
They would be lucky to get 15 hits in a series let alone score that many runs. The pitcher must have drew a lot of walks that day.
Gabe Krapler has the THIRD best job in the world !!
Rays were silly good in June 2009
The team had like a wOBA of like .370 without Longo being healthy
PIZZA?!?
Losing Pena for about another 10 days sucks
Even when he’s not hitting, he made a big difference on the team.
PIZZA?!?
Just curious
Why not wait until tomorrow when Sonny is eligible to come off the DL?
Miami is in Ohio
Platooning
It’s tough to criticize Madden when he’s 25 games over .500, but this team needs hitters in the lineup every night. Posters are right. They can rest in the off-season. Stop with the platooning! kapler is not a starter!
