An Essay On Sternfan and Contrariness

I've been a loyal DRaysBay reader and occasional poster for about 2 and a half years now. I have come to love the site for it's analysis, but what really keeps me interested is the debate. When I first started lurking here I would get caught up in some random thread about the intricacies of some seemingly esoteric statistic. It really got me into stats and new perspectives on the sport.

Over time I've noticed that there are two types of debates that happen in the comments sections. In the first type, a commenter (often a DRB neophyte) will post a legitimate question or perspective. The regulars and mods will either answer the person or guide them to a site (i.e. fangraphs) where that poster can better articulate their argument. These outside perspectives really help offset the confirmation bias that has a tendency to pervade sites like this and lead to mutually beneficial debate.

The second type of debate is the kind that rapidly devolves into a flame war. We've all seen this happen (bgfour and countless others). It starts with ignorance, which is not the problem, and arrogance, which is. When a person posts something and is asked to back up their stance, in this scenario, rather than admitting that they were wrong or didn't do any research, they just start attacking. Neither party gains anything from these petty fights. It's just yelling across the internet.

This brings me to sternfan1.

Star-divide

When I first started reading sternfan1's posts, they all seemed to be the kind that only ever set off that second type of debate. As I recall, he rarely using statistics to back up his positions. I think some people just got tired of his stubbornness.

But, to his credit, he started doing research, started backing up his opinions with facts. This was sometime last season, if I recall correctly, when his arguments became tolerable and reasoned. Still contrary, but reasoned. I liked those posts, when legitimate debate from a diverging perspective caused some self examination. Those were the good days.

And here we are. I follow sternfan10 on twitter and read what he has to say here. I do it, perhaps out of habit. I know he is going to say something inflammatory, contrary, and reactionary and people are going to argue with him about it. But it's never the good kind of argument anymore. These days, only when there is a chance to cause ruckus or denigrate a player, the team, the stadium, the fans, or the other posters, does sternfan1 have something to say.

So why am I writing this? It really isn't my place to speak up, since I'm hardly a regular poster. I just miss the debates. The REAL debates, when people weren't just trying to be a pain and start fights, but where they are actually trying to GET somewhere. Where coming to a conclusion and hearing other people out LED to some discovery, or at least a new avenue of discussion or analysis.

This isn't meant to be a personal attack on sternfan1. I'm just trying to use you (as the most vociferous of the commenter rebels) to show how good, positive, fresh thinking and debate can really benefit the site and all fans in general, and how being contrary for the sake of being contrary can kill a good debate.

Interesting thought...

and that’s always been my problem with sternfan1. It’s negativity for the sake of negativity. it gets him a reaction which is what he is looking for. He could have made his One Hit Wonder Post and left in the month that he excluded, but it was much more effective in feeding his hunger for response to have some controversy involved. I personally am not a fan of it, but as long as the management tolerates it the best thing to do is ignore it.

Boom. Outta Here.

Banning people for writing about his disruptiveness would be totally bass-ackward

But given the mods tolerance for him, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened before he was banned.

This.

All this talk of ignoring is ironic, seeing as how SF1 ignores any good counterpoint thrown his way.

He’s become a sideshow attraction to this site. Letting it continue is in poor taste if you ask me.

I agree with Vin. SF1's presence has made me not want to read the comment threads as often as I used to read them.

He doesn’t offer counter arguments or come back with anything of substance when he’s challenged. When he gets lucky and says something reasonable, which is rare, he gets praised for it.
However, he’s not making progress in my eyes, even with all the help people try to give him and all the questions people answer for him.
He criticizes the use of stats all the time, even though no one on here ever says a team should be run solely on stats.
I could go on and on but we’ve all read his nonsense and I’m not seeing improvement. Why has he not been banned already?

It’s easier to respond to flame, because you know you’re right. A lot of people just don’t want to get involved in an argument they don’t know they’ll win.

I think you should stay.

I mean today in the GDT you were railing on jennings pretty hard for his 3 ML ABs. That is way too reactionary, but in GDTs thats almost the norm. That is kind of stupid/annoying.

And on days after losses you can be really bad.

But its not your fault that people overreact to your overreacting. Well, it kind of is but whatever.

You’re not a terrible person.

Yeah, there's no need to hijack a GDT when the Rays are down by 10 runs.

We’re all already miserable, we don’t need anyone in there trying to stir up the pot. (See: Toronto game where the Jays hit about 50 homers).

While primarily a lurker [albeit avid reader]...

I am less concerned over SF1’s sentiments than the horrifying race-inspired (then a dose of gender bashing for good measure) GDT thread (on ‘Stallions) intended as funny. I don’t understand this site’s reckless stance on race/ethnicity. It’s not funny, folks. At minimum, such ‘comedy’ is meant for an OTTOTD discussion, not a GDT. I thought we covered all of this last year when anti-semitic comments started to pop-up en masse. :(

Please don’t flame this to justify comments.

Go Rays.

But on the real, yes there is a lot of racist, misogynistic, and homophobic speak here. But it’s funny, and meant to be funny. There is no “hate speech” here, so you can probably unclench gov’nah.

For me the line is drawn between GDT and research/analysis threads

GDTs are supposed to be reactionary. If there wasn’t a reaction, then the thread wouldn’t exist. I treat GDTs as what I’d say if I was around my friends, kind of what just pops into my head type of forum.

I think a good example, that we see nearly every game, is if someone has a poor at bat a poster will say “So and so sucks” or “so and so can’t hit” etc, sometimes the more level headed posters will preface it with “this at bat or this game” but it isn’t always the case.

Either way I don’t mind when posters say things like that. It is a GDT, full of emotion and reaction. Don’t take it so literal. And when someone does a stupid flame war breaks out that has nothing to do with anyones actual opinion.

So next time someone says “BJ can’t hit” when he watches a called 3rd strike you should just let it go. It is just emotion. Don’t take it so literal, think about it for a bit longer. Think about the intent and the meaning.

If a poster says “BJ sucks” in a research thread detailing season long wOBA’s and trends, then you challenge that poster.

To sum up all this BS I just wrote, I think we all can do a better job balancing ourselves as fans and ‘stat researchers’ and understanding when someone else is just being an emotional fan and when they are being their own version of a stat geek.

Go Gators!!
