Rays Pound Blue Jays, Ride Zobrist and Hawpe to 13-1 Victory
For starting this road trip off on a bad foot - losing two of three to both the Orioles and Red Sox - the Rays have managed to pull themselves together. They nearly lost yesterday after jumping out to a six run lead, but today's game was a lot less dramatic. The Rays scored six runs in the fourth inning and from that point on, Wade Davis held the Blue Jays down.
Pitching has been the Rays' downfall on this road trip; before today, they'd only once held an opposing team to fewer than four runs. Wade Davis may not have been spectacular today, but his performance got the job done. He went seven innings while allowing seven hits, giving up three walks, and striking out six. He let up one run - a solo homerun by Lyle Overbay in the fourth inning - and made the Blue Jays swing and whiff at both his fastball (six times, 9%) and curveball (two times, 20%). While his fastball's velocity decreased late in the game, Davis was hitting 95-96 MPH for the majority of the game, blowing those fastballs by the Jays.
Offensively, the Rays were led by Ben Zobrist and Brad Hawpe. After earning our scorn with his prolonged slump, Zobrist has been hitting the ball hard over this road trip. He has a .983 OPS and a .421 wOBA over the last seven days, and he cranked out two doubles last night and hit balls hard in his other at bats. And Brad Hawpe - well, I'm really beginning to like him. Hawpe broke the game open in the fourth inning with a grand slam off Ricky Romero, justifying Maddon's decision to start him against a lefty pitcher. While it may have seemed like an odd decision before the game started, Maddon always has his reasons. Hawpe has been hitting the ball well since coming to the Rays and I hope he keeps it up.
- Wade Davis has shown some flashes of ability in the second half this season, and when you look at his underlying statistics, he's had a very similar year to what David Price put up in 2009. Davis doesn't come with Price's pedigree and so I wouldn't expect Davis to become another ace, but as today showed, he's certainly got promise moving forward.
- Desmond Jennings had his first major league hit. In the eighth inning, DJ pinch-hit for Upton and laced a double down the rightfield line. Off the bat it looked like questionable if it'd be a double or single, but Jennings cracked up his speed and motored into second base easily.
- I think Maddon must lead the American League in times that he's taken the DH out of the game. After using multiple pinch-hitters late in the game, Maddon put Hawpe out in rightfield for the eighth and ninth innings. Luckily no balls went his way...

So did I
The only point of worry was when he loaded the bases with 2 outs, but he got out of it just fine. In the post-injury stretch, he’s looked more like Niemann than Niemann has.
Re: sacrificing the DH, I was thinking about that yesterday too. Does anyone do it nearly as often as Maddon, and has it really been that effective? Maybe fodder for a fanpost, though the stats could be hard to find.

hes done it with the game still on the line ( like last night)
but realistically we would only be in bad shape if those games went 3-4 innings extra, and we ran out of pitchers to sub in
Spectacular for him.
It was a solid performance overall. He didn’t induce a crazy amount of swinging strikes and he gave up 10 baserunners, but he got the job done. It was a great start for us right now.
I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

Considering since holding Boston to 8R in a 3G series
Rays pitching has given up 70R in 11 games, we’ll take anything right about now lol.

not in the short series
potential to be 4th starter in alcs if niemann cant find it
I like Price, Shields, Garza, Hellickson for a playoff rotation personally
But who knows if that’s something that AF also likes
Ricky Romero is a very good pitcher
This was quite a big win
The question is... are the Rays in October?!

Dear Mr.Sternfan
At what point did you decide to give up on an anemic offense rant, and start with the starting pitching rant.Give the pitching the rest of the season to right themselves. They may just be doing the rope-a-dope.lol
The Yankees
playoff pitching rotation looks a lot more questionable than the Rays.We only have to be better than our competition to give us a better chance to win.We don’t have to be flawless.
Their rotation really is in tatters right now
It’ll be interesting how they handle the situation

Yeah outside of Sabathia, their starters have not been that good at all lately. They are pretty much pitching by committee at this point.
We have had a couple of those starts lately, but their starters seem to get knocked out of the game early unless its Sabathia.
Their rotation is essentially CC Sabathia & 3 other guys right now
I’m guessing though Pettitte & Hughes are 3 & 4

I think i remember hearing about the game that really caused that ERA.
Obviously the rest of his month couldnt have been good, but I think they let him give up something like 10 runs in 3 innings in that game.
nvm wasnt quite that high
6 runs in 3 innings @ Dodgers and then 7 runs in 4 innings @ Arizona
He was turning the corner in July
Then he punched the door

Rangers blow lead.

Amazingly, only a 1/2 game back of the Evils…and tied in the win column. Sucks I have to travel to Chicago for the series coming up. Should be an electric atmosphere!
Did you really just say
That Mariano Rivera, the greatest closer of all time, blowing a lead is not surprising? I know you’re a Rays fan, but at least show a little respect.
I think he was just mimicking the comment above from Gone Fishing.

Good summary Steve, but I don't think Maddon's decision on using Hawpe against Romero
was that earth shattering or unconventional. I think lefties actually have pretty good numbers against him, especially in the HR department. And, Hawpe’s historically been decent facing left handers.
