I think most who go to games are more likely to side with the players
“I’m a better fan than you” mentality which we’ve seen plenty of times around here. I am talking about people who don’t go to games criticizing others who don’t, or having their feelings hurt by the comments. I really think you are an extreme minority.

Attendance isn't down, we're on pace to have our second most fans with only the year of inception being higher.
Hell yeah it is.
Any amount of points can be scored week to week. well, besides 1 point. Any number is as likely to be reached as another, since there’s only one of each number, each has the same chance to be hit. IT’s how the syetemof averages works.

2008: 1.7 mil
2009: 1.8 mil
2010: 1.8 mil
What I see is a consistently below average MLB attendance…even with having a winning team for three consecutive years.

I think a lot of it has to do with that every effing time the Rays are brought up, it's followed by attendance. It's an exhasuting conversation that was stale 18 months ago.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.

I thought the same thing. It worked in 2008, the only difference between then and now is about 10 percentage points in unemployment.
Do Tampa fans have a “been there done that” attitude? 2008 was awesome, but I’m still excited for this year. Seems like a lot of people have tuned out already.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
the Rays have given fans what they dream of
a playoff team that can compete with the Yankees and Red Sox. And they still can’t come close to a MLB average attendance. Yes, it is exhausting. And this is the last day I ever bring it up. The point to me is clear. This isn’t a MLB town. And that’s not some horrible slap in the face to St. Pete. St. Pete may be a lot of things (and a great place to live is definitely one of them) but MLB town isn’t accurate…maybe a ST town. And that isn’t offensive to say…not until they are pulling in MLB average numbers.

I personally don't care what the hell anyone says.
I feel justified in the way I spend what little money I have. I’m a fan, I watch the games, I keep up with the team.
I go to games when I can afford the time and money. Thats literally all I can do.
I’m sure everyone else has their reasoning too, and its not my place to question anyone. Unemployment, increasing cost of fuels, location, etc.
You don't know what he's got going on.
If it were a playoff game I’d consider going and trying to take an accounting test on six or so hours of sleep. It’s not, it’s a formality.
I’ve gone to five games this year and I’ve put in countless hours of essentially free PR work for the team and players despite making less than min. wage.
If you want to call me a bad fan for putting my self interests over the team here, then go ahead. I didn’t know fan was synonymous with slave.

That’s the attitude that kills the attendance IMO.

No college is that hard.
Some programs are tough, but if you look in the Princeton book they dub Wake “Work Forest” because it’s supposedly so much work. Everyone still had time to go out and party 5 nights a week. Like I said, UG isn’t that hard. If you have other things going on it probably is, but I just can’t imagine a scenario where going to a few games causes you to fail out. Now if you have a test the next day or something, doy you don’t go.
I don't think the implication was that Dobbertean never goes to games.
And you don’t know if he’s taking a massive load because he can’t afford the debt of student loans over a four year period so he’s trying to get out faster because his parents don’t have any financial security right now.
I don’t know what Dobbertean’s experience is, but when YOU went to college is different than going to college now. Though, yes, most people are the way you described them. But, not fucking everybody.
The implication was that it was an off the cuff remark in jest.
But everyone’s on high alert looking for reasons to jump on people. I guess I should have realized DRB’s coming menstrual cycle and been less offensive.

Anyone see Wall Street 2? or the Facebook movie?
Apparently the Facebook movie is getting good reviews, which means its more than likely a nice shiny turd.
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Well, movie critics are by and large douchebags, so it doesn't suprise me that a movie that's being nicknamed 'the douchebag movie' (The Social Network) is liked by critics.

As for Wall Street 2, that movie was delayed twice because critics panned it in reviews so they went and recut/reshot scenes. At least they're trying to make something likable.

Pinellas County may be more “northern” than say Hardee County, but that doesn’t mean that it lacks enclaves like Kenneth City, Lealman, and Pinellas Park that are very much culturally southern. Certainly moreso than D.C.

I think you are confusing "redneck" with Southern.
Go to Charleston, Atlanta, Memphis. Then go to DC (especially the huge difference b/w NW and the rest of the city). Then go anywhere in Central or Southern FL. Redneck and Southern are two totally different things.

As for FreeZo's opinion that he thought things would have turned around since last year...really?
You expected things to turn around in a year’s time?
You really thought we'd still be drawing 12k in September?
I don’t really remember anyone saying “Yeah, attendance isn’t great now, but it won’t really ever get better.”
I didn't have a specific opinion about attendance numbers, except expecting the economy to turn around in this area any time soon was foolish.

I went to a liberal arts school. We had everyone from Premed to Business school people in the classes. They were the most interesting and hardest classes I probably took. Also, they’ll teach you how to write an argument and defend it better than any classes you’ll take.
It depends on what you do, and how you invest your time.
If you’re going for business, it’ll be easier than something science related (generalizing here, not to offend). if you study as much as you can do do well, it’ll be harder than someone that just gets by. Just passing college and having high honors, it depends what you put into it.
Its fucking STUPID and incredibly offensive to assume that everyone has an easy time with everything they do. I’m not a dumb person, but the post grad shit is kicking my ass. Undergrad wasn’t easy, I had to put in a lot of time into certain classes. But now I have to put a lot of time into everything I do.

Try being a music performance major. Seriously
At least 18 credit hours per semester. Usually anywhere from 4-5 of those are 1 hour ensemble credits, but actually ensemble actually rehearse for 6-8 hours a week. Then theres the 4+ hours a day you need to be in the practice room, working on your repetoire for studio. Oh and those ensembles? You need to practice that fucking music, too. After that, THEN you have to write a whole goddamn piece for theory and learn about music from the year 1400 that makes you want to rape orphans. Oh and don’t forget about fucking hour long recital you have to perform from memory later this semester!
It’s no engineering path, but I always found it funny when my Poli Sci major friends would complain about how much work they had. I’d basically start at 8AM and get done with rehearsal/practice around 11PM every night. I guess the upside to the music path is that I actually (generally) enjoy what I do every day in school.
"If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library." ~Frank Zappa
My cousin did music performance and I'm definitely aware it takes a ton of time.
Its one of those things that you think is easy till you sit down and talk to someone that did it. Then you realize how hard it really is.
And I didn't even add in all the time I spend drinking/doing drugs.
Add that and you actually get about 28 hours per day.
"If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library." ~Frank Zappa
this is supposed to reply up there somewhere, oh well
and I’m not bitching about life being hard, I’m just saying that sometimes people actually have other shit to do besides go to games. I chose to do what I’m doing, and I’m not at all upset that it causes me to miss games. I actually want to succeed, so I’m going to put the work and time into it.
If you think this is somehow wrong, you’re a fucking piece of shit.
Your job is going to be harder than your studies preparing you for your job....

"Not a baseball town" is probably the weakest argument you could make.
I could even argue that it’s a better baseball town than New York.
How many pro players come from this state compared to New York?
How many Little League World Series Championship teams ever come from New York?
Including Spring Training, we’ve had baseball the same if not longer in this area then they have.

Baseball is in the soil here, I agree.
This problem is so convoluted at this point, though. WHY TALK ABOUT IT NOW, FUCKFACE LONGO. Why. Rip the fans in November or after we get rolled in the ALDS.

It's soooo arrogant to say "college isn't that hard."
I don’t know what you guys do after you graduate if you think college is hard. Postgrad in engineering? Well duh. It’s post-grad. How many med school or grad school students do you see out partying 5 nights a week? It was a throwaway comment that sutty got his panties in a wad about. HOW DARE YOU JUDGE ME CAUSE I CANT READ GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously why are you defending the fans here?
Yes, the economy is bad, yes the traffic in the TB area is bad, but the rays are the best team in baseball, and the cheapest ticket in sports. There is no realistic reason not to push 20k fans on weeknights, and 30k on weekends.

I have yet to judge ANYONE for not going to games.
I just said I agree with Longo that it’s embarrassing.
There are probably over a half dozen legitimate reasons why. They've been pounded into the ground over and over in the forty five attendance threads on DRB. Go read them.

Yes I understand this, but it still doesn't excuse the fan base for not showing up to support the team
It’s really fucking embarrassing that the giants pull in 45k a night with a horrible team to watch, and the mariners get at least 20k.
Yes they have new parks, and are in cities least effected by the economy, but come the fuck on. The trop pricing is so god damn low it more then makes up for it. I had row fucking A behind the bullpen, so close i could smell hickey’s hangover, for 40 bucks a pop.

So there was a big drive-by shooting today in the neighborhood I moved out of yesterday. Got out just in time.
Columbia Heights?
I was really surprised to hear about it too. U Street has become so gentrified, it’s hard to imagine this type of thing happening there. From what I understand, the shooting was practically at the front door of Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Where do you live in the District now?
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Sep 28, 2010 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I lived next door to the church where the funeral was on 13th ST between U and V.
I live near the Van Ness metro now. Out more in the burbs, but still a pretty cool area. Wanted to move in to a bigger house, and all the ones we looked at in Columbia Heights didn’t work for one reason or the other. I’m excited to learn the ins and outs of a new area of the city.
The gentrification of U St. is a pretty hot button issue, and I think part of Fenty’s losing to Grey was a perception that he fostered gentrification. Last night the area was so quiet though. I had some more cleaning to do at the old place, and it was the quietest I’d seen it on a Tuesday since the snowstorms. CRAZY. There were 2 news vans parked outside my old house. they tried to get me to talk to them, but I have no desire to be on the local news.
One of my professors lives pretty close to you, I was talking about the area with him some.
Cleveland Park is nice. I like pretty much the entire Connecticut Avenue corridor, it’s a neat urban corridor, but the neighborhoods along it north of Dupont Circle are very quiet considering how connected it is. I like Foggy Bottom, it’s in a really convenient location, but it’s character is largely dominated by it’s function as an office district. The restaurants, thus, are expensive, and things really quiet down at nights and on weekends. The university is the only thing keeping the area from being more than a 9 to 5 district. I think if I had to choose a place to live in D.C., I’d very much prefer either something close to Connecticut, or maybe something on Capitol Hill or in Barracks Row.

CapHill is probs a good spot to live for access to GW too because of Orange line.
If you like night life there isn’t much better than living in the heart of U St. though. Some of the best going out spots in the city all in walking distance (Ad-Mo, U st, DuPont), and the only ones you really miss out on are Gtown (bleh unless you’re in college or a summer intern) or CapHill which is a short cab ride. I’d imagine, though, that youngstar that you are CapHill/G-town/AdMo is the primary watering holes for your age-group. Can’t remember where my cousin said she goes (apart from The Black Cat and 930 in U St).
You'd be surprised.
I’m pretty lame in that regard. If there’s good live music, which places on U Street definitely have, I’m happy to go. On the whole though, that’s not really my thing. One element to it is that I simply don’t have the money to be shelling out for covers, and places that attract the GW crowd have exorbitant cover charges. People make up for it by pregaming, but too many of them make asses of themselves and I don’t really like to associate with that.
Maybe that type of thing will appeal to me when I have more money and a more mature crowd, but the many costs just aren’t worth prioritizing it.

As an outsider living in Calif
I see a bit of hypocrisy here. Most complain about the media views on this attendance issue, but when 3 fanpost start threads about it, the fire rages out of control, and you actually become the same problem that you hate. When you become consumed about an issue you have no control over, you actually divert the energy in the the one thing you actually love…GO RAYS, from a Tribe fan
You know what is good fun
when the dorm has the fire alarm go off 5 times in the span of 15 minutes just to turn off after 5 seconds.

The worst was the fire alarms at like 4 am on Thursday morning.
Going out on Tuesday and just falling asleep to have to get back up was awful with class the next day.

I don't watch Dessert shows.
I don’t bake, so it just bores me. Also, I’m stoned usually and would try to eat the TV. Maybe when tastivision comes along.
We had our first fire alarm yesterday.
Luckily it was at 11am and I was coming back from class when it happened. This being college, everyone actually in the dorm at 11am was asleep. Still, it made my decision to go to lunch that much easier.

It doesn't effect the monumental nature of the event.
I just don’t get how people who have invested so much in teh team get upset that the players APPRECIATE that support and want more of it.
People take it as a personal indictment of their fanhood...raging shitstorm ensues.
Hell, my initial reaction was WTF and I was at the game. It’s taken the shine off it a little bit knowing that the story tonight isn’t going to be about them clinching; it’s how many there were weren’t to see it.
It definitely distracts from the on-field success
And that should really be the focus right now. I’m more of a pessimist/contrarian than SRQ, and it definitely disheartens me to hear that coming from him. Prior to today my biggest worries were allotting postseason ticket passwords to my friends/family, and making banners to say goodbye to CC tomorrow. This just dampens the mood.

Thoughts from a Rangers fan.
I was really interested in coming over and reading TB fan reactions to the Longoria/Price attendance flap, and after reading this thread, I’ve got a few thoughts.
(Feel free to ignore this, encourage me to die in a fire, whatever you see fit.)
-Someone asked the question above why people can’t discuss this without emotion. I’d counter that with the idea that (on a national scale) baseball teams are generally perceived as a reflection of the community from whence they come. When someone tells me that the Rangers suck (they’re usually right, but that’s beside the point), I always equate that with their saying that Dallas sucks. Well, Dallas is my home, and I’m damn proud of it. Beyond that (and this is hard for people to understand sometimes), I think that moreso than any sport, baseball is an inherently emotional sport. You get tied to your team because they’re part of your life at least 162 times each year and, if you’re really lucky, a few times more. That forms a bond, and when you have a situation like this where the bond is strained or perceived as unrequited, it hurts. It’s allowed to hurt. In some ways, it’s supposed to hurt. I can totally understand the emotion involved here.
-What Evan Longoria and David Price said was not kosher. Forget being baseball players; they need to be smart enough humans to understand the perception that will dictate this story. Rich guys complaining that poor people are poor. That’s not necessarily reality, but it’s the narrative that’s been created, and they pushed.
-What Evan Longoria and David Price said was not factually incorrect. The attendance, from the outsider’s perspective that I have, has been low. They’re allowed to speak their mind; they just did so without considering the ramifications of their actions. If you want to be a leader and give “a rallying cry” to the fan base, make a commercial, Evan. Don’t spout off to a reporter about it.
-I’m sorry, TB fans. It seems like you’re being thrust into a really crappy situation, then being blamed nationally simply for falling victim to a really crappy situation. That’s really crappy.
-David Price: stop Tweeting. Just…stop it. Every time CJ Wilson Tweets, I’m afraid he’s going to admit to killing a hooker or something. There’s no upside for a professional athlete to Tweet. Also, David Price: your fastball makes me tingly in my sex-doin’ parts.
-If you guys could go play the Twins in the first round instead of the Rangers, that would be swell. I’d prefer not to get swept again.
