Tampa Bay Rays to give away 20,000 free tickets
Just got inside scoop that David Price and Evan Longoria will be making amends for their recent comments about attendance by offering up 20,000 free tickets to the Rays next home game, tomorrow 9/29. More details to come...
CONFIRMED: Marc Topkin confirms the story - http://twitter.com/#!/SPTimesRays/status/25820437773 (2 minutes after I broke it on Twitter - http://twitter.com/#!/zwendkos/status/25820330395)

Silverman: "I don't think we would have" done it if Longo, Price hadn't spoken out on crowd size, but it's more about creating Trop energy
EDIT: TBO.com is reporting this: .
Rumors began circulating almost immediately on Twitter that Longoria and Price bought the tickets, but Silverman said that the team made them available.

So how much do you think it'll cost them? $200K?

I'm sure the team will pay for it or sell to them at a discount
Neither of them makes all that much right now.

The team can't give away tickets on a regular basis
Because then they can’t sell them, but right now, a full seat is better than an empty one either way.

Yep, I know. Wonder if they would deduct it out of future earnings though.

The article makes it sound like it's the team giving away the tickets
Not the players

why can't MLB teams like the Rays adopt a "freemium" business model?
Give away X amount of free tickets to every game (mostly for weekday games with less appealing match ups – 5k? 10k?, none for weekend premium games) and make them available only in person, i.e. you will have to wait in line, thus making it less appealing. They are for the worst seats in the house, and Rays would gain in concessions, merchandise, etc. Plus you encourage people to come back or to upgrade to paid seats in the future. The fan base grows. The economy surrounding the stadium is boosted. Obviously there’s a lot more to it, and I could go on, but in short I think it’d work wonders for the Rays attendance and revenue, not to mention PR and marketing.
this seems like a good idea that just wouldn't work for some reason.

Too "bush league"
Also, I don’t believe the team makes much off of concessions. They get money off the gate, but concessions mostly go to the city.

Price and Longoria didn't give these tickets away, the team did.

Astros
On a trip to Houston this summer I found out that during the summer if you purchase a full price ticket you can get another ticket for a kid for free.
I thought this would be a great idea for a team like the Rays who need to build a fan base and have trouble getting people to the park.
Like

They still need 20K to show up and take the tix. I don't see it happening for all the reasons that we can't get 20K on a normal Wed.
Hell yeah it is.
Any amount of points can be scored week to week. well, besides 1 point. Any number is as likely to be reached as another, since there’s only one of each number, each has the same chance to be hit. IT’s how the syetemof averages works.

It doesn't matter if anyone claims the tix or not, they've been sold at this point.
Whether they are used or not, they’ve still sold these 20K tickets. It’s no different than why Fenway can be half full and they can claim a sellout.
Hell yeah it is.

The only reason to do that is to play up the fact that attendance is low, agenda'd
