can someone please tell me why they would prefer to trade Garza over Shields?
It just doesn’t make any sense. Shields stats have gotten worse in each of the last three years in nearly any stat you want to look at (ERA, FIP, BB/9, BAA, HR/9, WAR, WHIP)
If Garza wants to sign an extension (and that’s a big if) that buys out his arb years and 1 or 2 years of FA, wouldn’t that be the best choice?

i still wonder if Shields would get a good return
he’s still got a team friendly contract, healthy, 200 innings eater, and still a good pitcher. I think they’d get a good trade from him. I just think Garza is the one of the two that I’d rather keep.

He’s getting 3.5 (rounded) this year and should be getting no less than 6, 8, 10 over the next 3 by my guess. His FA year is worth something like 13M. So I’m saying he doesn’t sign on the line unless he gets 4/40 plus a high dollar option year. Even in this scenario you’re only buying out 1 FA year with maybe an option for another. Why would the Rays do this?

Why not just use Brooks’ normalized zones. Count up all the games for and against all year ( I believe FreeZo was doing this) and then analyze?
