Jeff Niemann Ineffective Again, Rays Fall to Red Sox 12-5
Tonight's Rays game was one of the more interesting of the season. Not for the outcome - there's only so much interesting in a 12-5 beating - but for the oddities that occurred within the chalked lines.
Lets start with Jeff Niemann. The Big Nyquil was making his third start since coming off of the DL, and this one didn't go any better than the previous two. He lasted only 1.2 IP, giving up six earned runs. Once again his command was off; he walked three batters and constantly missed Kelly Shoppach's targets. While he was off once again, he didn't get any help from the home plate umpire. Take a look at Niemann's strike zone plot:
Talk about kicking a man while he's down. But with the Rays fighting for the division there are questions about Niemann that now have to arise. Is he fully healthy? Is it just a mechanical flaw that's causing his issues? That's for the Rays front office and medial staff to decide. Whatever the issue is they need to find a solution quickly. What do the Rays do if Niemann keeps pitching this poorly? If he gets lit up again there's no way the team can keep running him out there. That would likely force them to insert Jeremy Hellickson back into the rotation, or Andy Sonnanstine if they're worried about Hellickson's innings limit. You only need three good starting pitchers for the first round of the playoffs, so as long as the Rays can make it there they have plenty of time to evaluate what exactly is happening with Niemann.
To say the Rays got players involved in the offense would be a gross understatement. This is the area where even if the team is getting blown out one can find a level of enjoyment. In the 7th inning with the team down 11-2, Joe Maddon took full advantage of the expanded rosters, tying a Major League record by using six pinch hitters in one inning. Dan Johnson for Ben Zobrist, Matt Joyce for B.J. Upton, Willy Aybar for Jason Bartlett, Brad Hawpe for Carl Crawford, Desmond Jennings for Evan Longoria, Reid Brignac for Sean Rodriguez. The results were good too; three singles, two walks, and a foul out.
The pinch hitting bonanza resulted in the most interesting defense you'll see the Rays play all season. Matt Joyce in left, Desmond Jennings in center, Brad Hawpe(!) in right, Dan Johnson at third, Brignac at short, Aybar at second, and Pena at first. If Hawpe and Dan Johnson are in the game at RF and 3B, things are either going terrible, or terribly well. In any case, it filled a blowout with legitimate intrigue. Which is about all you can say for this game.

Does anyone remember when Jeff Niemann had an ERA in the low 2's
and the Rays bullpen was actually good?
Seems so long ago and far away

Did anyone believe that Niemann's ERA would stay that way?
He is pitching himself out of the rotation though.

Did you expect it to double in three short starts?

Ben Zobrist needs to be replaced now
His second half which encompasses 272 PA reads like this 174/323/244
So for those that say i cherry pick a sample size, you can clearly see i’m not, and for those that use WAR as his friend, i’d love to know his WAR during this time span
Make SeanRod the full time 2B and platoon RF with Jennings/Joyce/Baldelli
Zobrist should be nothing more than a defensive replacement at this point

Does anyone know who has WAR as a seasonal split stat? I couldn't find it at fangraphs or b-ref.

From what i've been told it's N/A on a split season but should be

It's not hard to calculate it yourself if you use Dave's walkthru

This is since June 1st right?
Maddon's Mission
Make you want to kill him, then make you want to love him. Sly.

This is half his season as i clearly noted above
Keep dreaming some miracle occurs and Ben suddenly becomes a good player, but then awake and realize it’s nothing but a dream

I am certainly concerned about this season
The only thing he’s done for a few months at the plate is walk, and much like Upton when he was playing hurt, pitchers ultimately figured it out and started attacking him. He’s not even hitting fastballs right now. I suspect he is playing through some injury that he will deal with in the offseason, but he needs to at least move down to the bottom of the order. Hopefully I’m wrong and its a wicked slump from which he will soon emerge.

Off topic, but...
Do you think we could make some money by selling the title, “The Hit Show” to the Blue Jays?
They deserve it.
Isn't it possible
Isn’t it possible that his command was off BECAUSE the umpire was so crap-tasttic. His command seemed pretty good early. Then the ump missed a few calls, Jeff started thinking (which is never good, but with the Giraffe too much thinking is especially bad), and then the wheels came off. That was the naked-eye observation I had anyway.
That said, we gotta keep sending him back out there and hope he pulls it together. A playoff rotation with the good Niemann in it is really important.
I missed the game, but no less then 10 of those pitches called as balls could qualify as strikes. To me it looks like the ump pretty much strangled him out of any chance to pitch well.
If the ump is only going to call grooved pitches strikes, then Niemann’s got zero chance, so you’re probably on to something here.
So I should just change my sig to

This was my thinking
Here’s the normalized map for the entire game:

You can see that the high strike was in play, but anything at the bottom of the zone was getting called a ball. This is for the whole game, not just Niemann, but I prefer the normalized zones, because it adjusts for batter height.
The great thing about baseball is that it requires careful observation not simply attendance and it rewards the analytical person while consistently befuddling the superficial.

niemann really was getting squeezed to shit in the first inning
he made a bunch of pitches to Sloppi that should have been a K looking on a full count and the fucking ump kept calling balls. Of course when you have to pitch it down the plate the lefties will clear the wall in right. Beltre’s bomb notwithstanding, however, Niemann really got screwed over by the ump.
That strike zone really says it all though…what a fucking joke.
Man I just saw a tall super model giraffe lookin ass bitch and I thought I could fuck her an make 1 of them super ball dunkin ass niggas lol
I'm not going off the deep end SF1 style saying we will be in last next season
but unless AF pulls some more magic I’d be surprised if we are going to be as good and in a position to make the post-season and a serious WS run like this year. Not that we can’t do it but this has the chance to be a special year and I’d be disappointed if the reasoning for not sending out the best possible pitcher out there every 5th day is I’m afraid he has thrown too many innings.
I'm wondering if Jeff is more hurt than we thought.
The guy is having a lot more trouble than he should be having. I hope he’s fine and that he bounces back soon.
Shhh, some might attack you for thinking that
I have a scary 2 word thought on Niemann: Steve Blass
For you young’n’s that might not know the name, look up his career stats on BB Reference, and read a little bit about how quickly he totally, completely lost his command…
I certainly hope Hickey is right with the “easy to fix mechanical problem”, but I have doubts. If it was an easy to fix issue, one would think it’s been present siince he came off the DL, so 1) why has it taken 3 piss-poor starts to notice it, or 2) why hasn’t it been addressed yet?
I understand I am not provvy to any inside information, and I am not a pitching coach. But something looks really odd here, nothing adds up. the injury idea doesn’t either – Jeff was throwing about the same velocity as Lester early last night. But if getting sqeezed led to such a meltdown, there are other problems…
Just don’t know.
You could make that argument about any pitcher that had a bad run of 3 starts
Which is pretty much every pitcher, ever.

No use commenting on a massacre..where would you start?
Seeing Sonn. coming in was enough for me..turn the station..
Now we will see how far Maddon carries on with "I’M the boss and Niemann is going to continue to pitch no matter what"!
Oh yea Joe..how about losing a chance for the playoffs and your job at the same time…think about that Joe…there has to be another Showalter out there…
If Rays lose the next two to Bos., the Yankess will kill them in the seven game match up….then out of playoffs…
