So... Who Are Your Top 10 Prospects?

Given that it's only been a week since the last Arizona Fall League update, it's not worth checking in on 2-3 innings or 10 at bats. Instead, a conversation starter: What's your top 10 prospect list look like?

It's about that time, and it's looking like John Sickels will be the first "big name" with a Rays list out, coming within two weeks or so. BaseballAmerica will be tackling the National League first, Kevin Goldstein goes in draft order, and Keith Law unveils his all at once with his top 100.

Jeremy Hellickson, Desmond Jennings, Alex Cobb (innings), and Jake McGee (service time) have graduated. Here's my list:

1. Matt Moore - Duh.
2. Hak-Ju Lee - Still pretty easy.
3. Enny Romero - That's right, I went there.
4. Drew Vettleson - A drafted hitter looking good? Are we sure?
5. Alex Torres - Might be a bullpen arm, but a valuable one.
6. Chris Archer - Stuff is too good not to rank him highly.
7. Taylor Guerrieri - Stuff is too good not to rank him highly.
8. Tim Beckham - Prediction: This thread features a Beckham argument.
9. Mikie Mahtook - Similar to #10, but tools are a bit better across the board.
10. Brandon Guyer

Next five (in no particular order):
Josh Sale - It's still real to me
Jake Hager - Fine, fine
Ryan Brett
Alex Colome
Derek Dietrich

Maybe some small quibbles, but this looks mostly fine. It's not like there isn't just a stew of guys after Moore that haven't differentiated themselves all that much.

I’d probably slide Beckham up a few slots, but I’m guessing you’re just trolling for comments so I won’t linger.

All depends on the priorities of the grader

If you’re someone that likes players closer to call up then I think I’d have Beckham two or three. I’m down on HJL, but it’s not like I know anything. I hope he gets off to a fast start or you could see a lot of guys jumping ship.

You hade Enny rated 12th on your June list

What did you in the second half of the season that impressed you so much to jump him over all those players?

by Sveet on Oct 25, 2011 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

Partly the high strikeout rate, partly the fact he did have games where his command was good

Mostly it’s like Sandy said, no one past Moore differentiated themselves (I like HJL better than him but that aside) so I’m just going with a guy I really like.

I know nothing, but I can play this game.

1) Matt Moore
2) Hak-Ju Lee
3) Alex Torres – That curve ball caught my imagination. The run and sink on it are fantastic. Context matters, but in a vacuum, easily better than Helly’s, in the conversation with Shields’s.
4) Chris Archer – Someone reposted a racist comment from another site criticising archer for Archer liking to read and for his favorite book being a biography of Malcom X. Made me higher on him. There’s a strong correspondence between being a radical intellectual and an ace pitcher.
5) Tim Beckham – Proximity to the bigs is important for me. It takes away plenty of the uncertainty.
6) Enny Romero – See #5, especially for pitchers.
7) Drew Vettelson
8) Taylor Guerrieri – See #6.
9) Mike Mahtook – Hmm. I’d like to have him higher. This exercise makes me feel better about the system.
10) Josh Sale – One bad year for a highly touted high school hitter isn’t enough to hugely change my opinion on him. Still exited.

Not much statistically ...

… but he was a tad better in the 2nd half of the season (.744 OPS). His defensive statistics (don’t have scouting reports) look fine. He was quite young for A-ball also. But, overall I agree: Very bad approach at the plate, no signs of hittability.

He just simply was a favourite of mine since even before he was drafted. His potential seemed to be huge. I give him one more injury free year before giving up on him.

I liked Justin O’Conner as well when he was drafted but his year was much worse than Bailey’s.

I think Durham will be as good as always

Or at least, as good as you can be while graduating Matt Moore. Right now, Durham’s rotation looks like it’ll be a rehabbing Alex Cobb followed by Alex Torres and Chris Archer. That’s awfully good. And hey, Nick Barnese isn’t necessarily done as a prospect yet, either. So those are 4 guys worth watching.

On the field, they’ll have the typical AAA vet depth the Rays always stockpile, plus Beckham and Cole Figueroa in the middle infield, plus some interesting fringe prospects like Stephen Vogt (catching?), I-wrote-him-off-too-early Kyeong Kang, and of course Robinson Chirinos.

TBex, Alex Torres and Chris Archer explode and become elite prospects!!!! ;-)

by BurGi on Oct 25, 2011 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

enthusiasm warranted

the only thing needed for Torres and Archer to become elite prospects is for them to halve their walk rates. I know; that’s easier said than done — but still: Matt Moore averaged 5.1 BB/9 in 2009, 3.8 in 2010, and 2.7 last year. So it can be done.

by AndrewTorrez on Oct 25, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm just as high on Bex as you, I think

A lot of guys get a chance to put up dominant numbers when they repeat a league. The Rays have been aggressive with him from the start, promoting him a league a year without fail. The tools are still there. Contact is decent, and can show signs of improving. I like how he improves from AB to AB in-games. I wish I had more evidence for this, but I’ve heard this from a couple of places. He spent a year working on taking his walks (possibly to the detriment of other areas of his game), and his power potential is starting to emerge. He’s done this typically as the youngest player in every league he’s played in. He has shown flashes of all the tools. Defense, power, contact, patience, speed. I’m excited to see what he does at AAA, now that he’s had a taste of it. Nothing he’s done has been all that exciting. But he’s shown he’s capable of doing anything. I don’t know if that breakout year will come, but he still projects as an average to above average SS in MLB. That may not be #1 overall pick worthy, but considering how many of those flame out, and how hard it is to find above-average SS’s, he has a chance to have a good career in TB.

by raysfaninminnesota on Oct 25, 2011 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the list

Personally, I think I value floor more than you do, though. I think the top 6 are pretty clear: Moore, Lee, Guyer, Archer, Torres, and Beckham, because all six are virtual locks to play in the majors even though their ceilings are obviously different.

Not sure why Guyer is getting so little love; here’s a guy that was a tools-first prospect who finally broke out at age 24 and put up numbers to match. The Rays got him as part of a haul to see if that improvement was real AND promoted him to AAA — and look, it was! I’m an OBP-is-life guy as much as anyone, and Guyer’s obviously got flaws, but at worst you’re looking at what, the next Jose Guillen? And that dude has 6,414 MLB plate appearances.

After that, there’s a gap to the guys with great-to-good upside but who still might flame out in the minors: Romero, Guerrieri, Vettleson, Sale, Colome, and Dietrich (and probably in that order).

Don’t get me wrong — sometimes when you have a player with insane upside in the very low minors but also a huge downside (someone like Manny Machado?), I can see how a player like that cracks the top of your prospect lists. But right now I don’t see anyone in the low minors with that kind of insane upside that outweighs the certainty AND upside of the top 6 guys.

by Transplanted on Oct 25, 2011 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

here you go from :

Colome (BA pre-season):

Scouting Report: Colome’s live arm rivals that of anyone in the system. His 91-93 mph fastball touches 96 and features natural sink as well as armside run. He also throws a tight 11-to-5 curveball that has the makings of a plus pitch. He has improved the consistency of his changeup and used it frequently last season to retire lefthanders. Colome tends to overthrow at times, and his control and command can be erratic. He has learned to use the inner half of the plate by challenging hitters with his fastball, and he has shown some promise in backdooring his curve for strikes.

Romero (BA from July):

Enny Romero, lhp, Rays
Team: low Class A Bowling Green (Midwest). Age: 20.
Results: 2-5, 4.79 through 19 starts, 100 strikeouts, 48 walks, 9 home runs in 82 2/3 innings.
Best Start: April 7 at Dayton—5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts.

Romero throws harder more consistently than any pitcher here, sitting in the mid-90s and reaching 96 mph to give him a true above-average fastball. His power mentality applies to his curveball as well. It’s a firm breaking pitch with solid rotation, delivered from a high three-quarters arm slot in the low 80s. Both that pitch and his low-80s changeup remain below-average offerings, which he’ll need to refine in order to profile as a starter. Romero tends to walk too many batters, regardless of which side of the plate they stand, though righties have struck eight of the nine homers he’s allowed. Lefties have gone 23-for-93 (.247) with four extra-base hits.

Organizational discussion

Here’s everybody I can think of that’s of interest in the organization, ranked (roughly) in descending order within each position. I get 72 players that are at least worth thinking about:

RHSP (13) — Chris Archer, Taylor Guerreri, Alex Colome, Nick Barnese, Andrew Bellatti, Alex Koronis, Shane Dyer, Jeff Ames, Jacob Faria, Joe Cruz, Merrill Kelly, Jason McEachern, Jake Floethe

LHSP (12) — Matt Moore, Alex Torres, Enny Romero, C.J. Riefenhauser, Kyle Lobstein, Braulio Lara, Blake Snell, Ryan Carpenter, Matthew Spann, Felipe Rivero, Grayson Garvin, Jacob Partridge

RHRP (7) — Marquis Fleming, Matt Bush, Scott Shuman, Lenny Linsky, Dane De la Rosa, Jay Buente, Ryan Reid

LHRP (1) — Ryan Carpenter

C (5) — Justin O’Conner, Jose Lobaton, Matt Rice, Robinson Chrinos, Stephen Vogt

1B (6) — Cam Seitzer, Jeff Malm, John Alexander, Ismael Aguero, Henry Wrigley, Phil Wunderlich

2B (4) — Tyler Bortnick, Cole Figueroa, Ryan Brett, Robby Price

SS (7) — Hak-Ju Lee, Tim Beckham, Derek Dietrich, Jake Hager, Johnny Eierman, Juniel Querecuto, Brandon Martin

3B (3) — Tyler Goeddel, Taylor Motter, Leopoldo Correa

COF (7) — Brandon Guyer, Drew Vettleson, Josh Sale, Granden Goetzman, Kyeong Kang, Brett Nommensen, Todd Glaesmann

CF (7) — Mikie Mahtook, Kes Carter, James Harris, Joel Araujo, Ty Morrison, Cody Rogers, Deshun Dixon

DH (1) — Russ Canzler

Anyone I’ve missed? Anyone who should be completely taken off the list? I’ve probably shorted some of the VSL/DSL guys, most of whom I know very little about. But this quick take shows where the organizational strengths and weaknesses are.

I mean, he's on there

but having him between Morrison and Deshun seems to be selling him a bit short in my opinion, but I’ve always loved Rogers so I dunno. If he gets a chance to keep playing centerfield there might be something there, but if he moves to a corner, who knows

Also, I meant Mark Thomas when I said catchers, not Mark Rogers

by Navi's_Navy on Oct 26, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

he's done more statistically more recently than either Morrison or Deshun

although I suppose he also has a bigger glaring issues with the Ks. The fact that he has shown more raw power than he was given credit for a couple years in a row now makes me high on him. Morrison’s performance, coming off injury or not, was concerning. Sub .280 wOBAs this year from Morrison and Deshun don’t really compare to Rogers’ .340 .

Anyone that lists Moore at #1 is listing him too low, but anyways...

1. Matt Moore – Shook his hand in Texas, now beautiful women want to have sex with me.
2. Hak-Ju Lee – Whenever I go asian, I go #2.
3. Tim Beckham – Tim somehow ended up as Scott Cousins secret santa this year.
4. Alex Torres – Niemann’s wife calls him to finish the job too.
5. Drew Vettleson – He’s the Washington HS OF we drafted that knows how to play baseball.
6. Chris Archer – Stuff. Trust the process. Still looking for another bullshit reason to put him here.
7. Mikie Mahtook – with a name like Mikie, we know he’s mentally tough.
8. Ryan Brett – Dustin Pedroia is a poor man’s Ryan Brett.
9. Jeff Malm – Hosmer without the defense, production or potential.
10. Oscar Hernandez – Only a pussy leaves the VSL Babe Ruth off their list.

Like everyone said, everything after the first three for me are completely up in the air and where I have them today as opposed to tomorrow is pretty much arbitrary

1) Matt Moore
2) Hak-Ju Lee
3) Alex Torres

4) Chris Archer
5) Tim Beckham
6) Taylor Guerrieri
7) Enny Romero
8) Drew Vettleson
9) Mike Mahtook
10) Josh Sale

Others (no order): Guyer/Bortnick/Hager/Brett/?? ((I still dont hate Barnese but maybe Wilking around here?))

I'm a great talent evaluator

Moore
Lee
Torres

You can just pick anyone mentioned in this topic and put them in at 4-10.

Except Bex. He’s MAYBE top 25.

I'll admit I haven't paid nearly as much attention this year as I have for the last 6 or 7 years

But I’d go:

1) Matt Moore
2) Hak-Ju Lee

[large gap]

3) Alex Colome
4) Alex Torres
5) Brandon Guyer
6) Mikie Mahtook
7) Tyler Guerreri (love the arm, hate the head)
8) Drew Vettleson
9) Parker Markel
10) Tim Beckham

All that said, there isn’t a huge difference between 4 and 15 probably.

why so high on colome?

He throws about the same stuff as Guerreri

Doesn’t have the mental makeup issues, and while he doesn’t strike guys out like crazy, he’s always gotten decent results overall. Plus, one way in which my rankings have always differed is that I account for trade value. While we mostly look at the hard numbers with some scouting thrown in, that’s not how all teams look at it. and we can probably get good value for him.

Also the same reason I seem to be higher on Markel than everyone else

FWIW, my next few would be Archer, Brett, Dietrich, Goeddel and Gonzalez. And somehow I completely forgot about Enny Romero, who probably should have slotted in at #5.

Pretty interchangeable, IMO

But maybe I just have SNTS. Every single one of Archer’s peripherals got much worse this past year, so I might be overly down on him.

that's what i was wondering, if colome was up that high where the hell was romero?

BTW

Surprised nobody really has Colome in their top 10 even. His stuff is about the same as Guerreri’s, and at least he’s made it through AA without flaming out.
