Rays Community Prospect #4
With 53% of the vote, Alex Torres is elected the 4th prospect.
1. Matt Moore (100%)
2. Hak-Ju Lee (100%)
3. Alex Torres (53%)
Candidates: Chris Archer, Alex Colome, Taylor Guerrieri, Enny Romero, Mikie Mahtook, Tim Beckham, Drew Vettleson, and Brandon Guyer.
Chris Archer: With a superb slider and fastball combo, Archer has very good stuff. However, his changeup lags behind and his command has been very poor. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=archer001chr)
Alex Colome: Colome has a plus fastball and a developing curve and changeup. His command still needs some work. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=colome001ale)
Taylor Guerrieri: The Rays first pick in the 2011 draft out of high school, Guerrieri has a good fastball/curveball mix. He has no pro experience.
Enny Romero: Romero has a good fastball, a potentially plus curve, and a developing changeup.(http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=romero001enn)
Mikie Mahtook: Mahtook was a first round pick in the 2011 draft. He plays in the OF and possesses good all-around tools. He has no pro experience, except some time in the AFL.
Tim Beckham: The first overall pick in the 2008 draft, Beckham is the heat of much debate. Some say he has plenty of tools while others doubt it. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=beckha001tim)
Drew Vettleson: The Ray's second first round pick in 2010, Vettleson put up a strong year in 2011. He is an all around player with solid defense and a good bat. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=vettle001dre)
Brandon Guyer: Guyer has hit well despite being a little older for a prospect. He has solid tools across the board and should contribute for the Rays in 2012. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=guyer-001bra)

No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

I could care less about your graduate degree-I was a full professor at Harvard at 34 and am a full professor at Columbia now in a theoretical field whose main tool is statistical mechanics. So can can come down from your high place.

The Torres selection varies severely from the national consensus.
I doubt any will rank Torres in their top 100, but Guerrieri and Romero will find some lists.
I think Torres will be in more list than you think
people got all caught up in Cobb and Moore during the season but I think those who followed Durham and the minors will realize how good Torres is, he would be in the rotation of almost every other team in baseball.
THere is a short writeup here from Adam Foster
about Mahtook in case you didnt see it. He saw him in the AFL. Just scroll down a bit and you’ll see him name.
No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.
Meh
Mahtook reminds me of a rich man’s Jon Jay. In fact, Jay always had a very similar profile – was rated about average across the board on tools, below average on defense (Mahtook’s reputation is better than Jay’s was), and had great college stats. Mahtook’s performance was better, and his tools were slightly better, and he went in the first round as opposed to Jay who went in the 2nd. And while Jay will never be a star, he put up about a 300/350/425 slash line while playing most of his games in center for the world series champions. I wouldn’t complain if we get that kind of performance out of Mahtook, and his scouting reports were a fair amount better than Jay’s all the way around.

And yes I realize Jay is a lefty
So he does have an advantage there

The vote right now is Beckham at 6 and Romero at 9.
10 people voted for someone else. Unless Romero pulls away soon, do you guys want to go into a runoff?
Probably another day to make sure Romero has it.
Again, I hope I won’t be voting for the same players 3 times in a row, haha

The way things are going
I’ll have to vote for Colome 3 or 4 days in a row, even though all three of Sickles, BA and BP had him in the top 4. That’s not why I rate him highly, I just don’t understand why nobody else here does.
