Rays Community Prospect #5

With 80% of the runoff votes, Enny Romero is elected the 4th prospect for the Rays.

1. Matt Moore (100%)

2. Hak-Ju Lee (100%)

3. Alex Torres (53%)

4. Enny Romero (80% runoff)

Star-divide

Josh Sale and Ryan Brett will be added as testers.

Candidates: Chris Archer, Alex Colome, Taylor Guerrieri, Mikie Mahtook, Tim Beckham, Drew Vettleson, Brandon Guyer, Josh Sale, and Ryan Brett.

Chris Archer: With a superb slider and fastball combo, Archer has very good stuff. However, his changeup lags behind and his command has been very poor. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=archer001chr)

Alex Colome: Colome has a plus fastball and a developing curve and changeup. His command still needs some work. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=colome001ale)

Taylor Guerrieri: The Rays first pick in the 2011 draft out of high school, Guerrieri has a good fastball/curveball mix. He has no pro experience.

Mikie Mahtook: Mahtook was a first round pick in the 2011 draft. He plays in the OF and possesses good all-around tools. He has no pro experience, except some time in the AFL.

Tim Beckham: The first overall pick in the 2008 draft, Beckham is the heat of much debate. Some say he has plenty of tools while others doubt it. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=beckha001tim)

Drew Vettleson: The Ray's second first round pick in 2010, Vettleson put up a strong year in 2011. He is an all around player with solid defense and a good bat. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=vettle001dre)

Brandon Guyer: Guyer has hit well despite being a little older for a prospect. He has solid tools across the board and should contribute for the Rays in 2012. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=guyer-001bra)

Josh Sale: A hyped up first round pick from the 2010 Rays draft, Josh Sale performed poorly in his first pro year at Princeton, with rumors of swing issues (I don't know how accurate they are). He still has raw power though. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=sale--001jos)

Ryan Brett: A third round pick from the 2010 draft, Brett performed well during his first year. He has a good all around game, but his defense at 2B needs work. If he has to move, CF would probably be the spot.  (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=brett-001rya)

While I agree that Beckham is underrated right now

and his status is hurt because he was the #1 overall pick, I just dont by him right now. I would put Guerrier, Mahtook, and Vettleson ahead of him. Thats just my opinion though, dont blast me for it.

No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

I am very surprised at the love Beckham is getting.

Mahtook appears to be the better hitter already and, while he won’t play SS, should be plus in a COF spot and potentially get some time at CF if needed.

Mahtook seems to have every edge on him except pro experience and defense. The defensive gap between a little below average SS and a plus RF isn’t that big though, is it?

by mr. maniac on Nov 20, 2011 6:20 PM EST reply actions

How are you evaluating Mahtook's hitting? AFL? College?

Also, what level is he supposed to start at next year?

AFL.

John and I discussed it in the Rays thread. He said Mahtook is the better hitter at this point. I have a feeling Mahtook will start at A+ next year.

by mr. maniac on Nov 20, 2011 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Personally, I love what I see in the numbers from AFL, but I need more

And hopefully if he starts in A+, the Rays won’t hold him back, and he advances to AA midseason if he’s doing well, or even if he isn’t, honestly, so we have a better idea on him.

And about Sickels, he was a dick about Beckham, so I’m taking anything he says about the guy with a grain of salt.

Looking at their AFL numbers

Mahtook: .338/.410/.544/.954, 21.3% K-rate, 9.3% BB-rate, and .206 Iso
Beckham: .244/.364/.489/.853, 23.8% K-rate, 14.3% BB-rate, and .245 Iso

So Mahtook K’s slightly less, walked a bit less, hit for less power, and had a higher BABIP. I’m sorry but off the numbers I’ll take the younger SS.

by rglass44 on Nov 21, 2011 8:13 AM EST up reply actions

That two-month-younger edge is huge

Also Mahtook was coming off a much longer layoff than Beckham in terms of facing live, in-game pitching. He started slowly but then got into a groove.

And Josh Sale was bad last year becasue of BABIP.

Don’t use the BABIP arguement without seeig the player play.

by mr. maniac on Nov 21, 2011 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

When his BA is almost a hundred points higher, yes.

It is nice to see Beckham taking some walks and hitting for some power, but he is hitting such a low BA that it is partially nullified.

by mr. maniac on Nov 21, 2011 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

SSS for sure.

But I doubt Beckham is really a better hitter at this point anyway.

you forgot, "because Sickels said so"

I could care less about your graduate degree-I was a full professor at Harvard at 34 and am a full professor at Columbia now in a theoretical field whose main tool is statistical mechanics. So can can come down from your high place.

Does Mahtook develop some power on his way up?

If so, I like him a heck of a lot more.

Mikie may hit more than Beckham (who is still slightly younger FWIW), but looks like Tim might develop some power and play average SS or be a super util. We all know how much the Rays value a guy with position flexibility, which is why I think he’s a more valuable prospect with what we know right now.

I don't understand the Guyer love

he seems like a slightly better Ruggiano, I don’t see upside in him .

by Dbullsfan on Nov 21, 2011 4:08 PM EST reply actions

Plus defender at any OF position, great arm, speed, plus base runner, patience, flashes of power, and a RH bat who can hit lefties.

Plus he’s MLB ready and I value prospects that are closer to the majors a little more.

eh

not sure about the patience part.

but as far as Ruggs goes, he probably would’ve been at least a platooner for a handful of teams. Just because he rotted in the Rays system doesn’t mean he would have elsewhere. In his short time up last season he was fine, and if Guyer is slightly better (I think a little more than slightly), I’ll take that with his defense and good speed. Also, Guyer K’s a lot less than Ruggs.

I understand the love, and for me, it was a tough choice between Guyer and Beckham, and for me, they’re probably interchangeable in this and the next spot on the list.

He isn't a plus CF.

And his patience is weak. I would put more emphasis on the power.

But he is pretty much a 5 tool player. His patience issues (although they are not huge) and his age make him riskier.

by mr. maniac on Nov 21, 2011 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

couldn't you say the same thing about Ruggiano though?

maybe Ruggs doesn’t have the BB but other than that both guys have speed/power, hit for average, good defense.
