Rays Community Prospect #6 Runoff
The voting has come down to Mikie Mahtook and Brandon Guyer.
It is a very interesting matchup; the young drafted OF with loads of potential or the AAA OF who is older but also has a very high ceiling. I'm not going to lie, if I believed in Guyer like AndrewTorrez did, there is no way I would not have voted him at #2/3 overall. I'm just not entirely sold that he will hit well at the MLB level. Then again, he does offer more security than someone like Mahtook, who could reach a dead end versus pro pitching. Both have risks, just in different forms.
Mikie Mahtook: Mahtook was a first round pick in the 2011 draft. He plays in the OF and possesses good all-around tools. He has no pro experience, except some time in the AFL.
Brandon Guyer: Guyer has hit well despite being a little older for a prospect. He has solid tools across the board and should contribute for the Rays in 2012. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=guyer-001bra)

I could care less about your graduate degree-I was a full professor at Harvard at 34 and am a full professor at Columbia now in a theoretical field whose main tool is statistical mechanics. So can can come down from your high place.

No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

I will point out that I did start voting for Guyer at #3.

Good cover, John.
First, the Beckham/Mahtook thing, now Guyer/Mahtook. This wasn’t tough to figure out. John.

I guess I'm valuing floor a bit more, and the fact Guyer is closer the the bigs.
Let’s face it, if everything goes wrong Guyer is still a solid bench player, right? Mahtook might never make it past AAA, who knows?

I'm on board with the "closer to the bigs" argument for Guyer
But that’s been taken too far with Guyer vs Mahtook; I don’t think it applies to them at all. If it was Guyer vs Vettleson, yeah.
Barring injury or something disastrous, Mahtook, based on his amateur performance and scouting reports, should make the big leagues at the very least. He’s going to make it like Drew Stubbs or Tyler Colvin did (or whoever first round college bat for illustration). Guyer and Mahtook’s floors are not too far apart.

This!
Guyer is “closer to the majors” because he’s almost four years older!

All I'm saying is I value how colse a player is to the majors a bit more.
I voted for Guyer because we know what he can do at the very least, and Mahtook might not even make it past AAA. I’m not saying I don’t like Mahtook, I’m just saying if the player is about even (Guyer vs. Mahtook) I choose highest floor.

This doesn't apply.
“I’m just saying if the player is about even (Guyer vs. Mahtook) I choose highest floor.”
Guyer and Mahtook are about even right now, DDLR and Guerrieri are not.

As a prospect, that is.

Fair enough
I’m starting to think they’re not as close though. I had Mahtook 1 spot ahead of Guyer on my top 10 I did a few weeks back, but that will change.

Dumb statement, he's still in the system at a higher age and not organizational fodder, which means his floor is higher at this point.

A nice prospect to add to this list would be Alonso
The Reds have spoken to the A’s, Jays, Indians and Rays about pitching.
I AM THE MONSTER - The big SCARY monsta
I love HJL
but I’d have to strongly consider Alonso at #2.
by AndrewTorrez on Nov 25, 2011 5:15 PM EST up reply actions
I would consider, but Lee still goes ahead for me.
If Lee can be an average bat (I think he will be better than that though), he will be very valuable becase of his defense. I expect him to develop into a defensive stud at SS.
If it took Neimann, I would be a happy man
But they have been all over Shields for….well I guess it’s less than a year but it feels like a while now. Where would Grandal fall on this list? Or what if we got the Reds stoned, where would Meseroco fall?
Under construction
It shoule take Wade Davis, but if they took Niems it would be great!

I'm gonna just assume everyone wants our big 4 and they want Alonso
It’s easier that way.
Who do you want at 5? Neimann? Davis? Cobb? Archer? Torres?
first 3 are probably the only guys with a shot in hell, would any of those 3 get us Alonso?
Under construction
