Here's my post-mortem on the Dan Johnson era. I founded the official unofficial Dan Johnson Fan Club some time ago, and secretly, but it looks like it has had its last forum.

We had a pretty good discussion going in the original fanshot, so you may want to check that out first.

If you dislike Dan Johnson, you may want to save yourself the trouble of reading the above-linked unofficial official unofficial Fan Club article. It tells more story than stats -- and there's plenty of Dan Johnson stories to tell.

To follow up on my comparison to Burrell:

I realize it’s a hugely faulty comparison — what with precedent and pay scale differing so dramatically — but my point was more: A few hundred PAs don’t always tell the truth.

I’m not going to argue that Johnson had a great 2011 season or that Kotchman didn’t completely earn his starting spot — both are true things. All I’m going to argue: It would be nice to have Johnson back (on an MiLB contract, most likely).

On Burrell: I know WHY Burrell had a longer leash -- and it makes a good deal of sense.

I just don’t agree Johnson’s cooked like many seem to think he is.

Comment from other thread

.277 wOBA for 2010-11 combined. I think he could fare better than that, but I’m not optimistic about a league average benchmark.

To this point
•Johnson has a favorable contract (he’s under team control for the next two years), but is likely well past his prime — on top of not being really cold right now.

Go with DanJo: Dan Johnson is earning $1M this season, and after being relegated to the LHP platoon role, it seems unlikely he’d get a significant raise in his Arb 2 season. That means he might start earning $2M or so next year, but it seems unlikely he’d be making anything near Kotchman’s salary.

Nonetheless, the contract’s not the issue; the performance is. If DanJo cannot get hot at some point this season (and if he cannot get playing time, it is hard to imagine how he could get hot), then the Rays may just cut ties with him altogether.

An awesome moment to be sure, can be tough to keep those in perspective.

I still stand by that.

And I was right, too. DanJo lost his playing time, the Rays released him.

Of course, he did have a 138 wRC+ (or something in that neighborhood) at Triple-A, so he got hot, but not in the bigs (which makes a world of difference).

And yeah, I probably would feel this way about DanJo regardless, because I was touting and posting his MiLB stats all throughout the second half of the season. I knew he had caught fire, and kept hoping the Rays would give him a shot.

You all say this like it's so final

Aren’t you going to wait and greet the Great Pumpkin? It won’t be long now. If the Great Pumpkin comes, I’ll still put in a good word for you!

Good grief! I said “if”! I meant, “when” he comes!

I’m doomed. One little slip like that could cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by.

Oh, Great Pumpkin, where are you?

.

Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.

Just wait till next year, Charlie Brown. You’ll see! Next year at this same time, I’ll find the pumpkin patch that is real sincere and I’ll sit in that pumpkin patch until the Great Pumpkin appears. He’ll rise out of that pumpkin patch and he’ll fly through the air with his bag of toys. The Great Pumpkin will appear and I’ll be waiting for him! I’ll be there! I’ll be sitting there in that pumpkin patch… and I’ll see the Great Pumpkin. Just wait and see, Charlie Brown. I’ll see that Great Pumpkin. I’ll SEE the Great Pumpkin! Just you wait, Charlie Brown. The Great Pumpkin will appear and I’ll be waiting for him…

I could care less about your graduate degree-I was a full professor at Harvard at 34 and am a full professor at Columbia now in a theoretical field whose main tool is statistical mechanics. So can can come down from your high place.

This is on topic. Dan Johnson is the Great Pumpkin. He will be back. This is my hope. My apologies for having fun with it. Won’t happen again.
