Trading David Price
If you scoff at the idea of trading David Price, refer back to this FanGraphs post... It's not a crazy idea, really. Shields is cost controlled and a pretty reliable starter.

Yeah, I agree that keeping Shields and trading Price is an decent option....
… and I’m sure Friedman has already thought about it too. Shields’ cost certainty is nice over the next three years and the Rays are under no commitment financially if something tragic happens in the injury department. Price is certain to be more expensive in 2013 and 2014 (maybe 80% of Lincecum money at best) and while the ability to non-tender him is there if they are going year to year with him, going year to year is something the Rays are likely to avoid and Price getting a guaranteed deal over the next three or four years seems likely. With that there is risk, and Shields’ contract doesn’t carry that same problem at this point.
As for the return, I’m not sure there is anything you could offer the Marlins for Stanton. Moore perhaps, and that’s it. I agree that the haul would be significant and maybe a little better, but probably not a lot more than Shields would bring back given the fact that Price doesn’t have the same cost certainty.
I don`t scoff at the idea of trading DP
I scoff at the Marlins giving up Stanton and LoMo for him and Beckham though.

Yeah, that was wishful thinking
Maybe Jennings + Price + Beckham might get it done, though.

I would hope Jennings and Price would be more than enough
even with the money Price will be paid.
Am I the only one flagging this guy?
Seriously, do we have to wait for the money shot or a "F*** THE SOXXXXXX!" before we ban him? Doubleteapot… BAN HIM!!

Jennings would be too much.
Something more like Price + Guyer + something maybe like Colome.
Price and Stanton project to be roughly equivalent in WAR
But I think that Stanton’s power has to be slightly over valued in today’s market. LoMo’s defense is atrocious but at DH in the AL that would be a moot point. So I guess when you look at it, Jennings + Price out to get it done. I’m not sold on Guyer and I doubt many GM’s are either.

Ya I was just saying Guyer because they will lose 2/3 OF so they'd need something.
Breaking it down I Jennings would be worth much more than Lomo.
I don't think this is the offseason to talk about trading our core guys.
When this is our best chance at winning the WS in proably a few years. If that doesn’t happen, I’m totally fine with cleaning out Upton, Shields, and Price as they get too expensive. I think we can expect a big year for Price, which only makes him more valuble for other teams next year.

This is probably what Freidman is thinking
Obviously milking him another year is a good play. But if we could pickup a monster like Stanton or something maybe it is worth it?

Not right now I don't think we need to. We are already loaded in the outfield,
if we trade Price we need a nice 1B involved

I disagree that Stanton's power would rank him higher than Price
David is a left handed ace, look at guys like Sabathia, Lee and more recently Wilson. Outside of Lee, Price is better than all of them when he is on. However, even when it comes to Lee, he is younger and cheaper.
He, by far has to have our most trade value, the only young stud lefty making the same kind of money I can think of is Kershaw and you can bet the Dodgers wouldn’t trade him for Stanton.
Under construction

I have no problem with trading Price
If there was actually an appreciable difference in attendance when he was pitching, I might feel differently, but despite not being our best starter he probably has the highest trade value with a lot of potential trade partners.

Without a doubt
However, by how much is he really our best starter? We can count on a 4.5+ WAR season from Price, and a 4+ WAR season from Shields – both have a track record of staying healthy and while Shields costs more $ now, Price will certainly make a boatload in arb 1,2, and 3. I could see him commanding something like $18 M over those arbitration years. When you look at the Moore contract that was just signed for something under $15 M it seems like he may be a bit outside the Rays’ “Price” range. It would take an enormous offer though to get the Rays to essentially give up a super cheap year of Price. That’s why I put someone like Stanton out there, not that he would be on the block, but just as an example of someone who might be in that enormous range.

Price doesn't have a "super cheap" year left.
He’s arb eligible this offseason and expected to make $7.5-8MM, and over the 4 arb years will cost $45-50MM minimum over the arbitration process.
He is our best starter and it would be nice to have him instead of the 6th starter taking over his spot. He’s not untouchable, but would require a really nice haul to get him with 4 years of team control remaining.
we definitely flubbed the Service Time Champs in 2009 by calling him up.

Was not aware of that
In that case, trading Price now might make more sense if we can get a big time, 4-5 WAR bat that would help now and in the long run, along with some spects.
