Favorite would be Hayhurst
just because I hadn’t heard of him before and introduced me to his hilarity on Twitter and also his book

Yeah, I'm really glad we encountered Hayhurst.
He’s a great guy.
A DRaysBay and FanGraphs writer from Cubs Stats.
We should create a new department called "Baseball Arts"
And bring Dirk and Nando back to head that up.

Best: signing Farnsworth
Worst: Letting Cory Wade go
Don’t understand that one still.
What could be better than Dan Johnson
hitting .108
Let's trade Reddick for Heyward!

Cory Wade was the trojan horse release
Clearly he was paid to serve up DanJo’s HR

I remembered that after I typed it.
Maybe best move then?

Matt Moore extension was the best
Farnsworth for dirt cheap, Peralta for even cheaper and Damon were all very nice signings
The worst was Cory Wade. He could of been there instead of Russell/Sonny/Ramos/JP…
Matt Moore. That is all.
In hindsight, Damon blocking Jennings was probably detrimental.
Damon wasn’t a remarkable value along the lines of Kotchman, but if we’re praising the Farnsworth deal as one of the best of the year, and he brought 0.9 WAR over 50-some innings of relief work at $2.6 million, then I think we have to call Damon, at about twice the WAR for about twice the money, an according-to-Hoyle “very nice deal.”
this one is an easy one
July 28, 2011 (Standings)
Sold Felipe Lopez to the Milwaukee Brewers.
not traded for cash considerations, but sold. I didn’t even know that was possible until we did this.
Signing Kotchman to minor league deal.
For what he provided and what Dan Johnson didn’t at the beginning of the year the production from 1B could have been pretty ugly if not for Kotchman. I expect regression for 2012, but have to give Kotchman credit for what he did do in 2011.
This. Kotch was integral to the 2011 team.

My favorite
was the Garza trade because it added so much talent to the system for players who could be replaced with talent already on hand.
Since I am very optimistic about Lee in particular, it makes that deal all the more pleasurable.
It also continued the Delmon Young trade string which is great fun to follow.
And finally, it proved useful even in 2011 as it opened a spot for Hellickson who contributed to the post-season berth as well as netting Fuld who helped as well and Guyer who got a chance to contribute also.
So for representing the need for immediate help, near-future possibilities and long term contributions as well as depth for the system and a tolerable sacrifice of talent, that was my favorite deal of 2011.

For this year it was Farnsworth, Even more than Kotchman. Our bullpen situation was bleak and Farnsworth provided the stability for the rest of the guys to fall into place.
For the future it’s the Garza trade, not close.
I voted Kotch and here's why
Damon was a solid pick up but could we have platooned the position and got those numbers?
Farnsworth did great but when you hand the game to a CL in the 9th you usually win (90+%)
Kotch solidified a position where DanJo had failed miserably and he also helped the INF defense a strong part of the team

I didn't notice the retaining Friedman option when first looking through the list.
You could never go wrong with this choice.
really close between the Farns and Kotchman signings but I went with Kotch
because even though he had pretty much everything go right for him at the plate, he produced consistently when the offense as a whole was anything but. I hope we go with someone else in 2012 unless he is really cheap but his value to the 2011 team was huge. As far as the future, I have to go with the Moore extension, after his 4th of 5th All-Star appearance when he is still making 4th/5th starter money it will be awesome.
Garza trade, hands down.
Lee and others in return, and opened the spot for Helly’s ROY season.

Agree here...
Put a lot of young talent in the system, and allowed us to get the real future to the majors. Sam Fuld was even a big part of that trade all things considered. When he was good, he was really good.

Garza trade might be a tad overrated given that if we'd kept Garza we'd have had his production for the last year, and also his (still) tremendous trade value at the moment
Still a good trade though I think

Can you expound why?
League difference? Pitching repertoire/philosophy?
by Ben Tumbling on Dec 31, 2011 6:54 PM EST up reply actions
League difference.
To have a year that so easily trumps any prior ones while coinciding with a major change would do it.
Farnsworth was the best signing no doubt, better than Kotchman
With Farns we not only have him next year too but he also has considerable trade value both now and at the deadline
by benderbrodriguez on Dec 31, 2011 4:02 PM EST reply actions
Yeah about the trade value
I’m kind of surprised at the non-talk about trades involving him.
Why is everyone obsessed with Felix?
I would not give up the killer B’s or Montero for this guy! Why the heck is everyone obsessed with him?

I'm thinking he hasn't really been dangled around that much because we know he can be traded at a later date given how friendly his deal is
by benderbrodriguez on Dec 31, 2011 4:10 PM EST up reply actions
and that relievers don't generally lose too much value as time on their deals decreases, unless they suffer a drop in talent level/injury
by benderbrodriguez on Dec 31, 2011 4:15 PM EST up reply actions
I am a bit worried that Farnsworth will regress in 2012 and lose any closer trade value he had gained.

In the spirit of a hopeful new year
Jose Molina. If the framing research is accurate, his signing could be the cheapest wins ever purchased in modern baseball. It’s $4 million per win on the FA market and if I recall his framing was worth 2-4 wins/year. Also, throw-out success rate must be worth 1 or 2 more wins. We’re potentially talking about a $24 million a year value for $1.8 million, right?
by playjoyce on Dec 31, 2011 5:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I think the original estimate was an overestimation since the numbers used were unregressed (ie, not indicative of Molina or Jaso's true talent)
I think the more realistic estimate is that Molina’s glove is 2 wins better than Jaso’s. On the other hand, Jaso has to hit “only” around .260/.350/.370 vs Molina’s .241/.286/.344 career line to make up for those 2 wins. So it’s not a complete slam dunk of an upgrade.
by Ben Tumbling on Dec 31, 2011 5:59 PM EST up reply actions
So 2 wins for framing one for throw outs and one for hitting ( he is a better hitter than Jaso)
That’s still 12-16 million for 1.8 million. Pretty nice. Not sure we could say that about any other FA signings since ’06. Maybe Soriano.
