New Rays 1B Prospects

With the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California United States of America signing Albert Pujols, it leaves open a couple of interesting first basemen. With Mark Trumbo and Kendrys Morales already on the roster at 1B, the Angels now have an excess. Both players are young, and one of them has been devalued due to a freak injury which did not heal well and cost extra time.

Both players would seemingly be right up the Rays alley as one being under valued and the other being a young star in the making.

Hopefully Pujols can help us out yet.

i'd love to see trumbo come to town for his bat

but how is he defensively?

I also wonder if the rays would be buying high on trumbo here because of his season last year.

Morales, worries me a little bit. Lingering injuries are a scary thing for a team that doesn’t have much money to absorb bad deals.

Fangraphs has his fielding stats

as pluses.

In his last AAA season, he walked close to 10% of his plate appearances which is passable. Whether that can translate to the majors is a question, of course.

Also. his BABIP in 2011 was just .274 so perhaps he is due for a little bump up. His line drive rate was rather low, but I wonder if that is his norm or just a glitch.

Single season fielding stats are very risky

Trumbo did grade out well in his +/- as well from what I can recall. He’s not a third baseman though and I think the pitching staff would scream if the team put him over there on a regular basis.
