Ashley Agerenza, 19, has been charged with child abuse, resisting arrest and battery of a police officer after an incident outside Extreme Tan and Smoothies in St Petersburg, Florida.

Police said she first took the child inside the salon, but was told she could not leave the baby while she had a tanning session.

She then took the child back out to her car, strapped her into the car seat and turned on the engine, before returning to the salon.

I like how he completely misses the environmental impact high-speed rail has. He wants to spend money on road improvement so we can have more car capacity.

Widening interstates is SO much better.
Some of those projects include the widening of Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County, improvements in Miami, the widening of I-4 in Orange County and improvements to Miami, Port Everglades and Jacksonville seaports.

I do think you should be able to petition to do something about the tolls if you're a resident, but it's not likely to change

You might only drive a couple of miles, but you could end up paying like $2.50 one way. That’s $25 a week down the toilet

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Feb 16, 2011 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

Just don't pay the toll, you most likely won't be ticketed.

I knew a guy who used to just run the toll or pull onto the plate when someone who paid was still on it. Amazingly never got a ticket.

It took me 45 minutes the other NIGHT to get from the Disney point of I-4 to UCF

It took me 75 minutes to get home from I-Drive to UCF on Monday after work because I spent 45 minutes covering a mere 8 miles of I-4.

by Jason Collette on Feb 16, 2011 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

that's a 30 minute drive now. None of the roads have been widened...

yet more housing and business has been stacked along side the roads.

Colonial Drive is still 2 lanes each way as it has been since I moved here in 1988 despite the 5000% increase in population on this side of town.

by Jason Collette on Feb 16, 2011 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

How many lanes is it through there?

Every time I’ve gone down that area when it’s full of traffic I don’t think more lanes will fix it.

Just makes another lane for people to randomly change into and cause 10 people to brake.

by blackraven on Feb 16, 2011 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

HSR is for tourists.

It’s the secondary effects that is what make the project necessary. The windfall of construction around a new station in downtown Tampa could’ve been very significant for this area. Same for Orlando.

Let's just continue to go with Urban Sprawl and put cars on the road.

If the market every comes back, People will be priced to the outskirts of Tampa/Orlando. They will then be getting in their damn cars and driving to work, and all we’ll hear is “why can’t this be fixed, we need transit”.

Also, it’s a good idea to have high density commercial areas that no one can get to (Westshore in 5 years).

The thing with Florida government (and the government of quite a few states for that matter) is they they are retroactive, not proactive.

They will build more sprawling developments and crowd and overcrowd existing roads until the infrastructure cannot handle any more, then they bring in construction crews and further inhibit traffic while they widen roads, create bypasses, etc.

The Transporation Tax was a no brainer for this area.

The same people who voted “NO” are the same people that always ask me what I’m doing to fix the transportation problems. Fix them? WITH WHAT F’ING MONEY?

This rejection of the Federal funds is astounding too. Scott said, before he got into office, that he wanted to return the money even though he hadn’t see the reports yet. So basically, he had formed his opinion, then took every report done by professionals and said “no, I don’t believe you”.

The gubmit has been invading the Transportation Trust fund to pay teacher salaries, well now that money has dried up and guess what, teachers and transportation are about to take a huge hit.

Past, present, future, mistakes have been made.

I think you're confused.

I’m too proud of my area and state to ever admit that anyplace else is better. I wish my home area and state would improve the way they do things in certain areas, but you will never get me to say that another place is better.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Life's a campaign.

And besides, I’m too stubborn to ever grant that place could be better than my home.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

What place?

Every area has it’s charm. If I lived in the tampa bay area all my life, I might never have left it. It isn’t terrible.

I just gave up having to vote against the rednecks, and now I live in a city that’s 80 percent registered D.

by putupyourDUKES on Feb 16, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

That was a typo on my part.

It was supposed to read ‘any place’.

I mean, I could certainly move and find a place that was more politically homogeneous, on the liberal side of the ledger. But I have too much invested in the bay area to ever abandon it. It’s a beautiful area with a lot going for it, I have great friends there, history there, and I feel a connection to it. It’s part of my identity. With that much at stake, I’d prefer to work to improve the area by working with people and representing their interests in making sound public policy.

The area has so many natural gifts that make it such a great place to live, and there’s so much potential for it to be better. I find that is true of the state at large as well. It’s a challenge to affect change in such a closely-divided state, but it’s so important to do so and such a compelling task to set out upon. Florida is by far the biggest swing state in the union; if you’ve done well there, you can be confident that you can affect change for the better across the country.

Agreed.

I love the constant sun. The dark days up here are so depressing. Also, it gets dark so much earlier in the winter here.

I thought I would like the snow, figuring that if it were going to get cold it might as well snow, but it’s just not that thrilling to live in it. It’s actually a major pain in the ass. I can’t believe how I took sixty degree winter weather for granted.

It’s cool to see some of the rivers/glads, but they they can’t compare to regions with mountains and oceans. This is all personal preference anyways.

Ya brunt
Citing concerns that the project’s costs would spin out of control and that taxpayers would be burdened with operating subsidies, Mr. Scott argued that fiscal prudence gave him no choice. The Governor apparently has no trust in the private companies he claims to laud, failing to give them a chance to demonstrate their interest in the project. He apparently has no interest in offering his citizens the opportunity to pioneer a mode of transportation that has been repeatedly scuttled, in Florida and elsewhere, by the distinctively American ability to ignore the potential benefits of intercity rail.

Public transit in the United States needs to have a commuting function to be successful.

That’s where the vast majority of the ridership is going to come from and that’s where the road traffic reduction will be most apparent (thus making it politically popular). If the trolley were linked up to a larger, regional network, it would see much greater ridership as a circulator system downtown to get people to their offices, people to entertainment venues, to lunch, etc. The Portland Streetcar has succeeded on this very idea.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

Obviously.

But overall, ridership on any form or mass transit in the Tampa area is dependent on a denser urban environment. Something that Hillsborough Co. has done a terrible job of maintaining.

Agreed.

Though outside of New York City, even under the best urban circumstances, you need park-and-ride stations to facilitate commuting. I’m all for encouraging density around urban stations, I think that has to be a primary focus, but you’re going to need outlying stations with lots of parking regardless.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Trolley and streetcars were hugely effective once upon a time

Then GM et al convinced everybody cars were better. So streetcars were done away with, replaced by buses (built by GM? Hmm). But buses were for poor people (and who the fuck wants their neighbors to think they’re poor?), so public transportation crapped out, and now we need to pave everything. The end.

by nomoredevil on Feb 16, 2011 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

The thing about public transit networks is that foresight is an absolute necessity.

Very rarely is the immediate cost-benefit analysis going to be favorable for embarking upon such projects. Indeed, it may never look favorable if you look at the investment strictly in terms of profit and loss, while ignoring the social benefits it provides and the economic development it channels. Some things, like enhanced quality of life, are inherently immeasurable.

The thing with the trolley, like most small networks, is that its limited range reduces its utility for most people. The trolley doesn’t serve the downtown business district, only the tourist and leisure areas. If you expand the number of places accessible via the trolley, as is planned, you will see ridership gains along all segments as it becomes a more viable option.

The same principle holds for expanding light-rail, metro rail, or even HSR. The Tampa-Orlando segment itself is more of a demonstration project than anything; it’s not a huge game-changer. But it does provide the starting point for a statewide network and encourages expansion that will increase its utility immensely. The feds were eager to fund the project not because it would attract a lot of riders, at least initially. They wanted to see it funded because it was logistically easy to get started and a good trial project for HSR technology that can be improved upon nationally, and even on future legs within the state.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

It's completely different modes.

HSR and local light-rail are different. Besides, $15 million is not a huge deficit in transit subsidy terms. The Houston light rail line attracts an incredibly high amount of users per mile, and they’re eager to expand the system for that reason. It’s also helped economic development along the corridor it operates on in downtown.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

Of course.

The case against investment in transit of any kind, including HSR, is pretty easy to make because it requires a large up-front investment with little initial return. It’s an uphill struggle everywhere. That’s why Obama’s use of political capital to try and advance a vision of HSR is so impressive, in my eyes. Of all the initiatives he’s pushed, this is the most unexpected (at least in terms of how far he’s taken it) and there’s something positive to be said for his political courage in pushing it.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

I'm unfamiliar with the Houston rail system

But operating one phase of the transit network is not necessarily a bad thing. Especially mass transit. It reduces congestion, which increase productivity and planning/maintenance costs on other legs of the chair. (e.g. roads remain in better repair for longer periods of time, and you don’t need to build as many.) It’s a lot like how the Rays run their baseball club.

Let's play 'identify the speaker':
“This is a huge setback for the state of Florida, our transportation, economic development, and important tourism industry. I have urged the governor to reconsider going forward and allow the private sector to assume the risk and any future costs for the project. I made this appeal to the governor this morning. With the federal government assuming 90 percent of the cost of the project, I am disappointed the private sector will not have an opportunity to even offer innovative proposals to help finance the balance of the costs and to construct and operate this system.”

After the Magic defeated the Wizards, 110-91, at Verizon Center on Feb. 4, Lewis sauntered over to the visitor’s locker room, where Arenas apologized to a player whose championship aspirations were squashed the moment he was swapped in exchange for Arenas on Dec. 18.

Amtrak is a private entity that cannot compete, ironically, because so much public money has been thrown into highway construction, and not into rail infrastructure. Still, there is a very large percentage of freight that is transported by rail, and they’re doing quite well.

This is just Rick Scott's day.
TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Rick Scott welcomed African-American legislators to lunch Tuesday at the Governor’s Mansion, but his choice of words left some feeling more alienated than ever.

In discussing his own humble origins, Scott suggested all black lawmakers grew up poor.

“I grew up probably in the same situation as you guys,” Scott said to the group of 20 Democrats. “I started school in public housing. My dad had a sixth-grade education.”

Guy should do stand-up.
On the health care law: “It’s Obamacare to me. That’s what it is,” Scott said. When lawmakers asked him to call it by its formal title, the Affordable Health Care Act, Scott said: “You know, when I’m on Fox, they never call it that.” Scott was on Fox News again Tuesday, his third appearance in 17 days, and he slammed Congress for not repealing the law. The lunch’s lightest moment came when Scott jokingly called it the “Non-Affordable Health Care Act,” and lawmakers applauded.

So what about rumors that it is haunted and cursed, or it’s the site of Satanic worship? According to The New York Times article, the home has become a magnet for riff-raff – some more raffish than others. The Armenian Power gang used the home as their clubhouse and tagged the home with graffiti. It became a teen hangout spot for weekend raves. It also took turns as a crack house and, yes, a place for Satanic worshipers. No reported murders or aliens, though. Police nailed the windows and doors shut only to have them pried open again for more mayhem. That’s when Devine hired a 24-hour guard to " … run off the gangs, squatters, crack smokers, interlopers, and curiosity seekers."

Breast police report ever

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/file/breast-exposure-bust?page=0

A Florida woman upset that a visitor to her child’s school was showing too much cleavage was arrested yesterday morning after she allegedly took matters into her own hands, literally. Laura Campanello, 43, was leaving a meeting with her 17-year-old son’s guidance counselor at Bayshore High School when she passed a woman whom she believes was too scantily clad. After Campanello asked the woman–who was visiting the Bradenton school with an enrolling student–to cover up her chest area, an argument broke out. According to a Manatee County Sheriff Office affidavit, Deputy Greg Jenkins, the school’s resourse officer, arrived on the scene and advised Campanello that the other woman "was an adult and that I could not tell this lady how to dress.""Oh then I can…just do this," Campanello responded. As detailed by Jenkins, Campanello then allegedly "pulled the front of her blouse down reached in with both hands and pulled both breast out and squeezed them together." The impromptu display in front of several onlookers resulted in Campanello’s arrest for disorderly conduct. In an interview, Campanello, denied exposing her breasts. "I am a proper person," she said, adding that Deputy Jenkins was a "chubby, rude, lewd, and lascivious" man who "had it out for her."

Lara Logan, 39, was covering celebrations for a “60 Minutes” story, the network said, when a frenzied mob of about 200 people surrounded her, her crew and their security team. Separated from the others in the chaos, Logan was surrounded, beaten and sexually assaulted, the statement said.

Sucks.

I always preferred B&N to Borders anyways, but they really are wiping out all of the ones that I would ever find myself going to. The one on Gulf to Bay at Clearwater Mall is done, as is the one on K Street here in D.C., which I would think does good business.

CBS News first identified Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi as “Curveball” in a 2007 investigation of “one of the deadliest con jobs of our time.” Although U.N. inspectors found no evidence to back up al-Janabi’s claims of a biological weapons program, the Bush administration still relied on the bogus evidence to start a war that’s led to over 100,000 deaths.

So why did al-Janabi do it?

In interviews with the Guardian newspaper, al-Janabi spoke about how he sought asylum in Germany and wanted to see an end to Hussein’s brutal regime in his homeland.

“Maybe I was right, maybe I was not right,” al-Janabi said in his exclusive interview with The Guardian newspaper. “They gave me this chance. I had the chance to fabricate something to topple the regime. I and my sons are proud of that and we are proud that we were the reason to give Iraq the margin of democracy.”

I like the plan with the extra boat slips.

But the whole thing is really exciting, I love the idea of re-connecting downtown St. Pete with an active beach — re-kindling Spa Beach’s former glory. The Vinoy Bridge is a great way to connect the northern parks to the whole think and create an activity center all around the basin. I love this idea, I hope it goes through.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Two concerns.

The retail and restaurant options need to have appeal to the local population. The entire plan seems geared to giving St. Pete it’s own, cool version of the Navy Pier. That’s fine, but the Navy Pier is a gigantic tourist trap that sustains itself without much local support. I don’t think St. Pete can do the same given its size, so there has to be something there that will draw locals in.

Secondly, St. Pete has a very bad track record of working to support private development. As great as this looks, it is eerily reminiscent of the failed BayPlaza efforts of the early 1990s. Grandiose, but possibly difficult to accomplish in practical terms. That isn’t to say that it should scale down its ambitions — I love the fact that they’re going for a home run here and not settling for mediocrity, which I was truthfully expecting, but any agreement with a private developer needs to be more stringent than the open-ended Bay Plaza failure that resulted in a lot of public investment with little to no ultimate private return.

Let people drink of the beach

I think the restaurant will do fine as long as it’s decent. The retail is where I think it could fail

I don't mind Baywalk's design.

I think it is accessible and open, for the most part, with lots of retail space. Channelside, on the other hand, is legitimately awful. The entrance ways are not engaging at all — they force you through a dark corridor from Channelside Drive. There just seems to be a bunch of wasted space. It also doesn’t engage the actual channel well at all. It makes about the worst use of the space as possible.

The Jacksonville Landing has a much better design under similar circumstances.

I could attempt to explain this, but after reading a few of your posts in this and other articles, I think it would be a waste of time.

I'm told that the city commission was muttering just that under their breath after the meeting

The caller said the boy, after removing the bulb from its socket, left the building and threw the bulb on the ground. When the bulb broke, the caller said the boy screamed "I am going to deem your kids as a POS"

Doesn't the city have $50 million set aside for an overhaul anyways?

$50 million that cannot be used outside of the downtown economic development zone? If so, for an additional $20 million, this is a bargain IMO.

What's the marginal gain in tax revenue that the city will collect from the site development on an annual basis?

I’d have to see the numbers, but you also have to consider the non-quantifiable quality of life benefit that the additional amenities would bring to the community.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Feb 16, 2011 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody knows that yet of course, it's a initial proposal. There is also ample evidence that downtown St Pete doesn't need more retail right now.

The caller said the boy, after removing the bulb from its socket, left the building and threw the bulb on the ground. When the bulb broke, the caller said the boy screamed "I am going to deem your kids as a POS"

by Top Gun Numba 1 on Feb 16, 2011 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

That's true.

I think the dearth of activity at Baywalk, in addition to all of the streetfront retail opened up in new condo towers, means that St. Pete has a glut for now. Still, by taking the present Pier off the market, the supply of marquee space is reduced, which should help to fill up vacancies as the economy rebounds. They can get started on this project as scheduled, and build the retail components as needed.

Let me rephrase.

I’m more disappointed because a) this is a chance for St. Pete to really make something special, b) I have a really long sentimental history with the Pier, and c) this area has been lacking really impressive modern architecture forever.

There are very few modern buildings worthy of recognition in this area in general. The new TMoA, Signature Place, the North Shore Pool entrance, and maybe a few small others. I’m pissed at this being a wasted opportunity.

Overall, pretty meh.

The idea of having the ocean as a backdrop and the city behind is pretty okay, I guess.

But the bridge they have in there is so boring, the amphitheater is nothing special, the retail buildings are plain and not different from anywhere else in St. Pete…I could go on and on.

I think the bridge looks neat.

It’s new for this area at least, although it kind of looks like the bridge in Chicago to Millennium Park over the train tracks.

I thought the idea of a swing bridge in the Vinoy Basin would be pretty cool.

JP is jacked
Howell put on about 30 pounds of muscle – up to about 196 – which he thinks will reduce strain on his shoulder and could even increase his velocity. Maddon agreed with the first part, and wasn’t sure about the second part, especially since Howell’s past success wasn’t from throwing hard but with deception and movement. "He’s a big part of us, and he helped get us over the hump in a big way,‘’ Maddon said. "And I’m really looking forward to him coming back because he is such a weapon out of the bullpen, here’s a guy lefthanded that gets lefties and the good righties out too, not just righties he gets the good righties out. It will be great to get him back.’’
