#Rays Maddon confirms LHP Jake McGee will be used in relief (which helps bid to make team). Had been some talk of starting him at AAA.
This news from Marc Topkin, St. Pete Times. If that's the case, then it changes things a bit from our look at the bullpen yesterday. I feel like McGee is a favorite to make the bullpen out of Spring Training, leaving only one more spot for Mike Ekstrom, Rob Delaney, or Corey Wade. Interesting.

Let's take another look at the pen in late March
i’m convinced new faces will be added either by trade or waiver wire
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
we have the potential to have some really good lefties in the pen by September
Mcgee, Howell, and Torres.
Not if they're at their innings floor

Very very disappointing
But our FO knows best

I'm pretty sure Bender's always been in the McGee for Starter camp.
I like the move though….I just never thought McGee had the secondary pitches to make him into a front of the rotation starter.
I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

I think he did.
After all, Price really has little after his FB. His FB is plus-plus and his curve is above average. Slider and changeup are both average.
McGee’s curve/slider is better than Price’s although Price has a better FB. Lefties who throw hard are rare.
That he start in AAA
I still have visions of him as a left handed Josh johnson

I'm in on this train
I think there’s a good chance something else happens and he gets to start at some point in the future. I could see him being sent to AAA when Howell is healthy if the rest of the bullpen is pitching well.

I just hope we don't Joba him
that dude has been F’d up by all the bullpen to starter to bullpen to starter etc etc etc
Yeah, I'd hate for McGee to get so screwed up he'd have a 2.98 FIP
like Joba did last year

Love the move
Hopefully Cano, Granderson, Gardner, Gonzalev ,Oritiz, Crawford, Drew and Ellsbury will hate it.
If the plan is to use him out of the pen
Then doesn’t it actually make MORE sense to start him at AAA? That way you’re only missing him for upwards of 20 innings rather than 70.
by GomesSweetGomes on Feb 17, 2011 3:00 PM EST reply actions
If they are trying to delay his arb clock
Then it makes sense to keep him down. And this is even moreso if they don’t see him as a starter this year, as its easier to cover 20 innings with a replacement player than 70.
Its really more of a hypo than anything, as we already have 5 capable starters.
by GomesSweetGomes on Feb 17, 2011 3:22 PM EST up reply actions
I can't see a reason to delay his ARB clock if they're planning on using him as a reliever.
There’s no need, monetarily at least.
Besides, the current FO hasn’t been too worried about ARB clocks the last few years. Last time I can think of that happening was when Howell and Sonny were called up.
If John Jaso somehow strikes out, it means you didn’t do your job right as an umpire.
by raysrule44 on Jul 9, 2010 8:37 PM CDT
With pitchers I wouldn't be worried about arb clocks anyway.

Please NO
I hope the organization is smart enough not to copy the mistakes made by the Yankees with Joba and Hughes, especially Joba,

Hughes certainly didn't work out at all.
I don’t think it was the handling of Joba, I think it’s that he’s fat and doesn’t work very hard.

To be fair, Cashman recently stated that his arm isn't the same as it was before.
For what that’s worth.

Obviously he's not going to the '08 version again
But I don’t think that was sustainable anyway.

Our Andrew Bailey!
Too many talented SP, especially with Moore and Archer and the 15131 other good SP in the system right now. Are we going to trade them all? Or the current rotation as years go on? The Rays need BP help, especially at closer, and this move is fantastic.
GO RAYS!
Very good to hear
Almost like announcing he will break camp with the team, unless he has a god awful Spring. I hope he is our lefty, our only one until JP comes back. No Cesar’s please and I doubt Swindle has a chance.
Give the last spot/JP’s bench warmer to Wade
Under construction
What you think the lineup will be Joey?

How does this look for a bullpen?
Late innings:
McGee
Russell
Middle Innings:
Farnsworth
Howell
Roogy:
Peralta
Loogy:
Cabral
Long-man:
Sonny
Then as soon as Cruz is ready, the underperformer will be shown the exit.
If we have JP and McGee, no reason to keep Cabral around
2 lefties who can get righties out, no loogy needed so Cruz can take that spot.
Under construction
I don't think he will be with the Red Sox or Rays
I think he will be a Padre as the PTBNL.
Plus the guy wasn’t even that good in Single A.
Under construction
yeah, I'm not excited to have him on the major league roster all season
When will the Rays announce the PTBNL? Is there a deadline? That trade was a while ago now.
GO RAYS!

They're going to be down one at some point this season
Adams is constantly hurt, Bell is probably going to be traded, and I think at least one of their BP guys will be a starter this season. Can’t remember the name though. So maybe they’re in the market. Who knows?
GO RAYS!
by SandalsNoPants on Feb 17, 2011 3:29 PM EST up reply actions
I don't see how Cabral even has PTBNL value
If he’s traded, the rule 5 rules would still apply and he’d have to stay on San Diego’s roster all year. If the Rays don’t keep him on the 40-man roster, before he is offered back to Boston he’d be exposed to waivers where the Padres could pick him up to put him on their MLB team.

I said Cabral was the PTBNL at the winter meetings...
I’m still holding out that theory ends up being right because I asked that of Friedman in one of the daily wrap-ups but couldn’t get any acknowledgement

will he?

Excited by the announcement
McGee represents a major boost to the pen, perhaps not just now but in future seasons. With the high cost of late-inning relievers, perhaps the Rays now have two cheap arms in McGee and Russell they can grow with (with a third perhaps Matt Bush), providing the bullpen with some stability and longer term success. If Friedman is able to pry someone like Brad Ziegler/Michael Wuertz/Joey Devine from the A’s, then the Rays perceived weakness could very well return to a strength in short order.

I know not everyone agrees with me
But I personally think Brandon Gomes would give us a 3rd very good, pretty young, cheap RP
Under construction
it would be awesome if he pans out
the ability to provide arms in-house can give us, again, longer-term stability. And help with cost control for the next few seasons.

Read on MLBtraderumors that the DBacks might listen to offers for Brandon Allen
Also said we had some interest in the past. His numbers in the minors look pretty good. I’d be interested
Definitely excited about this
Wasn’t expecting him to be in the pen, but I have to trust the front office on this one. Should be a sexy pair of lefties once J.P. gets back!

I don't see the problem
about Jake never being able to become a starter once he pitches out of the pen.Earl Weaver would bring his young arms to the majors through the bullpen. We have already seen Joe do this with Price and Hellickson to a smaller degree.
If Jake can make and help the team,it seems like a win win for Jake and the Rays.
Price and Hellickson only pitched a little in the bullpen.
That is very different than a full season.
I agree that this will
be different. The Reds are going this route with Chapman, and like I said Earl Weaver went this route when his rotation was stacked with 20 game winners.
Joe has stated that we will find another way of doing things to win this year. The use of Jake just might be one of those things.
CJ Wilson would be a better example.
At this point, Chapman may never start (at least for the Reds).
