The intention is to estimate a direction. Not write history in advance.

Yeah, xFIP has some quirks. Yeah, some pitchers and pitching coaches seem to defy it. That doesn’t make it useless.

Doppler radar does a pretty decent job of showing rain and cloud movement, but it doesn’t tell us humidity or temperature — and, hell, it doesn’t even predict the rain perfectly either. That doesn’t mean we right to say, “Doppler is a stupid instrument.”

I think FIP is great, but as a judge of past performance more than anything. I don't like the idea of artificially normalizing HR rates in xFIP.

If you say it has a better correlation to future ERA, fine, but not so much that it’s any more helpful than FIP or SIERA or whatever
