Shoenfield suggesting Rays as "Perfect Fit" for Carlos Beltran
It's in the last couple of paragraphs. I mean, if he's gonna keep raking and the Rays are within striking distance near the deadline, thanks to June's draft we might be in a position to afford a couple of top-10 prospects and eat half that contract to make a postseason push. We could slot him at DH and move Damon to 1st. History dictates the team doesn't trade prospects for rentals like other teams do, but other teams also don't have 12 of the first 90 picks in an exceptionally deep draft class.

More thoughts.
If the team thinks Fuld can be a productive solution in LF, Jennings does become expendable and Guyer could replace the production that Beltran would bring during his few months here long-term. I’m sure they’d have to give up a quality arm and a lower-level prospect too. We’d no-doubt ‘lose’ this trade in value over long term, but if it helps get the Rays another ALE title, I think they can afford the expense.

His defense is really good. I'd be willing to settle with a below-average bat for it as long as the team has offensive solutions elsewhere.
I know a couple others talked about his OBP; if he can get an OBP around .350, even though that’s weak for a leadoff hitter, it should still be good enough for this team.

Not this year, but the player I'd love to see the Rays make a run at
is Hanley Ramirez. He’s got 3 years at 15, 15.5, and 16 million. High salary…but look at the Rays payroll for the next 3 years. If they trade Upton and add Hanley their payroll would still be under 60 million. Something like Upton, Brignac, and a pitching prospect not named Matt Moore would probably get the job done. It’s a big if, for the Marlins to consider moving him. But to have Ramirez-Longo as our #3-4 for the next three years would be pretty damn sweet.

What do you mean "not this year?" He's in the last year of his contract. He's a free agent after this offseason.
Also, your plan is completely insane. The Marlins aren’t going to be interested in Upton or Brignac.

No he isn't?
That doesn’t make the post above less insane but he’s definitely locked up through 2014

I've watched my share of Marlin games
Man, can Hanley get under your skin fast. Of course I’d want him though.
However, Marlins will just keep him at SS, they wont care for Reid at all and they seem to love their little OF of Morrison – Coghlan – Stanton so they don’t need Upton.
What pitcher? Because if you want them to stay on the phone for Hanley, that name probably does have to be Moore.
I don’t see a fit. But how about a rental of Reyes, hes a FA and the Mets are broke, he will be a lot cheaper and the Mets are much dumber than the Marlins.
Under construction
Even with Hanley being awful defensively, he's still been the most valuable SS since 2008.
The contract is too long and the Marlins have no reason to move him at this point except for that contract. The Rays can’t really afford to pay that kind of money either so they’d have to move him at some point as well. I have no idea why anybody would consider Brignac a trade asset since he can’t hit, and seeing how Upton is going into his final year of arb this offseason, the Marlins aren’t going to be interested in resigning him either. The Marlins would only want prospects in return for Hanley. The Rays would end up paying through the nose.

Brignac is cheap, young, and good defensively
And why can’t the Rays afford it? The way their payroll is set up now, they could. Especially if you subtract Upton’s salary for next year. It’s a financial risk investing so much in one player, but the Rays can pull it off. And if they are not interested in Upton, then you can offer something else. Maybe Upton can be part of a three way trade, and the prospects from him can go the Marlins.
What I"m saying is the Rays have the minor league system to pull it off, without sacrificing the future. No guarantee the Marlins move Ramirez, obviously. But if they do, I think the Rays should give it a shot. The lineup stability of a Ramirez-Longo middle of the order would be fantastic. And to get production out of shortstop would be a added advantage. It’s something to consider.

Yeah, it's an awful contact. It's almost certain that the Mets will be sending some money whatever deal they make to get the trade done.

Also, I'm probably over-estimating what it would take for the Rays to get the trade done. Jennings + a scrap arm would probably be enough, and they can probably pull it off with an even weaker positional prospect.

yeah...not awful by any stretch....
if he’s a 4-5 WAR player this year, he’s earned every penny of his contract…even with the injuries.
