Matt Joyce Destroys Worlds, But The Rays Still Lose
Going into this game, I'll admit it, I didn't have high expectations for the Rays' offense. Justin Verlander has thrown a no-hitter this year and been one of the best pitchers in the majors for the past few seasons, and the Rays' offense has barely been able to top three runs over the course of the past week. They could barely scrounge up six hits yesterday against Phil Coke and Charlie Furbush, so it was a very, very pleasant surprise to see the Rays knock around Verlander for six runs in six innings.
That's right -- six runs against Verlander. Who woulda thunk it? When Matt Joyce cranked his homerun to right field in the fourth inning to put the Rays ahead 3-1, I had one of those, "Ahh, this is why I love baseball" moments. Truly anything can happen on any given day. But by the time the end of the game rolled around, though, I wasn't feeling quite so at peace with the world. After gaining the lead in the fourth, the Rays handed back the lead to the Tigers twice, losing on a two-run homerun from Alex Avila in the eighth inning.
To make things even worse, the Rays could have won this game; they allowed a couple cheap runs. For example, in the bottom of the second inning, B.J. Upton dropped an easy line drive that was coming right at him, which would have been the final out of the inning. Instead, the Tigers scored a run on the play and Davis had to throw an extra 10 pitches to get out of the inning. And later in the game, Miguel Cabrera fell behind in the count 1-2 and watched a beautiful fastball go by right over the plate. The pitch was called a ball, though, and a few pitches later Cabrera turned on a hard inside fastball and hit a three run homerun out to left field. Talk about frustrating.
Oh, and the game-losing homerun that Cesar Ramos allowed to Alex Avila? It was the first extra base hit off Ramos by a left-handed batter in the majors. Last night just really wasn't the Rays' day.
Game Notes:
- Matt Joyce was the star of the show. He mashed a homerun off Verlander in the fourth inning, hitting a hanging changeup into the right field seats. That was his eighth homerun of the year, tying him for the team lead with Ben Zobrist. Joyce had three hits on the evening, and one of them came against a left-handed pitcher late in the game.
There was a brief scare in the sixth inning when Matt Joyce got hit in the back of the arm with the ball while trying to score, but thankfully that injury was far milder than it initially looked. Joyce banged himself around all game, though: he also made a few running catches in the outfield, and he hit the wall a bit hard on one of them. He didn't seem any worse off at all, but I couldn't help but cringe whenever I saw Joyce even slightly injured. Right now, the Rays desperately need his bat in the lineup. - Despite his final line (6 IP, 4 ER), there were some encouraging signs from Wade Davis today. His overall velocity was better today, averaging 91 MPH and hitting 94 MPH on occasion; while I'd still like to see Davis throw harder more consistently during a start, Hickey had talked with Davis about cutting loose, so it was nice to see a step in the right direction. Davis primarily worked inside to right-handed hitters, busting them in on the hands with his fastballs, and he induced a lot of weak contact. He still didn't get many swinging strikes or strikeouts (5 whiffs, 4 strikeouts), but he still had good command even with the slightly increased velocity (high strike percentage, only two walks).
Overall, I'm encouraged by this start; Davis was way more fun to watch last night than he has been in a while. His curveball - AKA, his old knockout pitch - was very successful whenever he used it, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we're moving in the right direction with Davis. - Sean Rodriguez had a great piece of hitting against Verlander in the top of the third. He got an outside fastball and ripped a line drive double to right field. When you consider that Verlander is about as difficult a righty as you can face, that's great to see.
But that's not all. Rodriguez also hit another double off Verlander, rapping a hard-hit groundball down into the left field corner in the sixth inning. Can we please get S-Rod some consistent playing time? - Oh, and Rodriguez definitely has the arm for shortstop. He made some impressive throws from deep in the hole at shortstop today, gunning out the Tigers every time. I still don't feel comfortable enough to comment on his range at short, but his arm certainly isn't a concern.
- The Rays have now lost eight of their last 12 games, and as the Yanks and Red Sox won last night, they're now in third place. C'mon Sonny - we're counting on you today.

Great to see Zobrist reverting back to his 2010 situation
and an alleged all star who can’t make a simple adjustment , and continues to suck
Great to see Sean Rodriguez rip 2 doubles against Justin Verlander, the RIGHT HANDED pitcher with 2 NO hitters, but let’s sit him in favor of Reid Brignac or Elliot Johnson

I normally don't bitch about the team saving extra money, but the Yankees are good, but not 95 win good this year.
We don’t know when that opportunity is going to come again to pass them up and snag the wild card, especially when I don’t see us making a giant leap next year in terms of talent.

Has there ever been a team in first in mid-May that just refused to improve the team with three ready prospects at triple-A?

Far be it from me to disagree, since you know what you're talking way more than I...
But Guyer only has 150 PA in Triple-A and Cobb only has 47 IP.
Granted, if it was me, I’d have called them both up by now. But I’d imagine you could make a case that both of them could use more time in Triple-A. Even if there aren’t weaknesses showing in their stats, the Rays may haver certain things they’re trying to get each player to work on right now.

Eh, development doesn't automatically end when a player reaches the majors
It really doesn’t look like there’s anything big they’re working on (like McGee’s velocity). Like I don’t see what adjustments are left for Cobb to make in triple-A given his performance.

I think you can make a case for Guyer playing in Triple A.
But, Jennings and Cobb should be up now.

Obviously it’s a habit he’s acquired over the years, but just taking a little more time between pitches could resolve it.

NIce Recap
Sure, there are going to be a lot more negative comments today than positive, but I was encouraged by some of the same things that you touched on.
- Wade Davis seemed to have more velocity and was a bit “meaner” on the mound.
- Sean Rodriguez had several nice at bats which is encouraging. I still don’t like boxing a 25 year old kid into a part time player based on splits. Maybe last night was enough to give Joe Maddon the confidence to give Rodriguez some extended playing time. Maybe Rodriguez does well enough to stick, maybe he falls flat and returns to his part time role, but either way I’d like to see the scenario play out.
- Matt Joyce continues to impress and his value was never more understood than that moment where he clutched his elbow. If that didn’t quicken the pulse and turn the stomach than your probably dead.
Finally, here’s to hoping that the Rays take this afternoons game and head home fro an off day with a good feeling with Price, Shields, and Hellickson ready to rock and roll against the Tribe.
We'll see. I hope Rodriguez gets the chance to play everday, even if it means SF1 toots his own horn for another month.
He’s been atrocious against lefties throughout his career and his MLE splits aren’t that encouraging, but it’s also only about 450 PAs. Doesn’t it take like 600 PA to tell if someone actually has a real platoon split?
As for Wade, he only handed out two free passes and struck out four. That’s better.

Because you called Matt Joyce a Quad-A player. And there’s a dozen other ridiculous things you’ve said that have no basis in reality.

Wade Davis' FIP over 5 now
Travels at 140,000 mph. Produces 500 megajoules of energy. Originates from the heavens.
Wade Davis doesn't have an out pitch all really good pitchers need
He gets two strikes on hitters and can’t put them away leading to high PC and the hitter seeing more and more of his repertoire, which is never a good thing
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
Well, he's supposed to have that hammer curve.
I only paid attention to the game tangentially last night, so the only time I saw him throw it the hitter fouled it off.
It doesn’t help that he struck out Cabrera and then gave up a 2-run shot when the call didn’t go his way.
@ptSuttery
It was actually a 3 R bomb
And you’re correct, just cause you don’t get a call you groove a pitch to Miggy?
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
In his defense, Miggy turned on a pitch way inside.

I count six strikes here, two of which were called balls.
@ptSuttery
It's possible. Like I said, I wasn't paying a ton of attention to the game.
Balls and strikes plot for Wade:

If anything, it was a tough fastball in on the hands.

He got swinging strikes on 20% of his curves last night.
Granted, it was only something like 2 swinging strikes out of 10 pitches. But yeah, he still seems to have a nice curve…it looked good last night when he could locate it.

by Steve Slowinski on May 25, 2011 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions
It'd be nice if he went to it more, but I said that about Garza all the time and he never really went curve heavy.
@ptSuttery
I understand the coaching staff's "fastball command first" philosophy, but it would be nice to see our pitchers go to their breaking stuff earlier.
Certainly Shields does with his change up. Price can get away with it most of the time because he’s got an 80 fastball coming from the left side, but Wade doesn’t have quite the same luxury.
@ptSuttery
I wish Hellickson threw the curve for strikes with 2 strikes more often.
It fools batters and he would catch alot of them looking.
This is where I was at last year hoping he'd have more confidence in his secondary stuff and then after his DL stint he did go to it more with better results
Hopefully he’s still getting dialed in

Wade
Davis needs to throw that knockout curve for a strike or drop it just below. Throwing a 12-6 curve in the dirt isn’t doing much.
The elevated fastball got him alot of Ks in 09 (up and above the hands), and batters remarked how it was unhittable because of the late life.
Example: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=6514303
I love when he's getting a bunch of arm-side run as it moves more like a two-seamer with the velocity of a four=seamer
I’d love to see more of that 2009 version, but even his better starts last year didn’t remind me a whole lot of that. Maybe he’s just a guy that takes a month or two to get fully stretched out. Maybe his fastball isn’t good enough until he’s stretched out a bit more and even then he has a slim margin for error. I wish he’d not be so exclusive with the fastball because it’s not good enough of a pitch to live and die with it. All of this out there, but I’m still happy that our #4 pitcher keeps us in games, particularly against one of the best in the AL last night.

Longo is struggling too and Zobs helped carry us while Longo was down so I am willing to give him some time to break out of his slump. Besides his slump isn’t that bad right now. It’s the offspeed stuff he’s gotta adjust too.
Who hasn't been attempting something the last few years?
To Zobs credit, I think he was hurt most of last year and played through it. Every hitter has a weakness and most of the time it is the offspeed stuff. For those type of guys, it is more about recognizing the pitch out of the hand. Its very hard to do for some. That is why I hate the guessing approach to hitting. I prefer the look FB react offspeed. But, I see a lot of rays hitters going with the guessing approach.
