Rays Lose 7-3 To The Indians
The Rays (27-24) dropped game two to the Cleveland Indians (31-18), losing 7-3. James Shields (5-3) took the loss today despite pitching a solid game. He managed 7 innings, while striking out 8, walking 3, and allowing a soft homer (if there is such a thing) to Matt LaPorta.
After the first two innings, it seemed unlikely Shields would finish the 5th inning, much less the 7th. Michael Brantley led off the game with a single and then came home on an Asdrubal Cabrera triple. Cabrera's success was short-lived however, as Shields promptly picked him off third base for his league-leading 6th pick off. The Indians scored another run later in the inning on an unusual double play, where Carlos Santana flew out to Matt Joyce, scoring Shin-Soo Choo while Travis Buck got doubled off first base.
The Rays offense was never able to put together a big inning, though, despite collecting 9 hits and 2 walks. Evan Longoria, hitting lead off for the first time in his MLB career, went 2 for 4 with a walk and a home run deep into center field. Though it was nice to see Longoria putting together a nice day at the plate, he did so while batting behind a trio of players who went 0 for 7 with 1 walk.
The game took a bad turn for the Rays in the 8th inning, as the Indians got the big inning the Rays missed. Reliever J.P. Howell came into the game and, after a long at bat, allowed a seeing-eye ground ball single to Michael Brantley. Ben Zobrist then missed a easy double play ball for his 4th error on the season and Howell plunked Choo in the back. Then Shelley Duncan hammered a pitch to left field, but the ball banged off the wall and B.J. Upton got it in quickly enough to hold Duncan to single while two runners scored.
Kyle Farnsworth then came in relief of Howell, getting the inning's three outs while allowing another two runs to score on a Orlando Cabrera single. The Rays put together a decent threat in the bottom of the 9th, loading the bases and forcing the Indians to turn to their closer Chris Perez. Johnny Damon, batting with 2 outs, slapped a ground ball to Matt Laporta, who mishandled the ball, allowing Damon to reach first safely and a run to score. Unfortunately, Evan Longoria did not notice the nature of the error and chased Sean Rodriguez off third base. Rodriguez was then caught in a rundown and tagged for the game's final out.
The Rays conclude their series tomorrow at 1:40 p.m. ET, sending Jeremy Hellickson to face off against Justin Masterson.
Other thoughts from the game:
- Sam Fuld went 0 for 3 with a walk, but at least to of those outs were hard hit and could have gone for hits. His recent up-tick in performance may earn him more consideration for a return to the lead off spot. Frankly, anything should be better than having the team's best hitter there.
- Casey Kotchman and Sean Rodriguez both had two-hit days. Kotchman also legged out a double in the ninth, his sixth of the season. One of Rodriguez's hits came on a run-scoring safety squeeze, a play with which Joe Maddon seems enamored.
- Juan Cruz had a great showing, pitching a quiet top of the ninth while striking out two batters. His command has been somewhat of a concern this year as he has walked 15 and struck out 16 (if you include today).

Another Zobrist screw up at 2nd, put the game out of reach. For shame. That's 3 big errors in the past 2 weeks?

Sam Fuld did have 'to' hard hit balls though

I hope we see rest days for Zobrist and Upton tomorrow
both had brutal games today
Then you have no talent on the field
BJ had some minor time off last weekend, he can stay in CF. Zobrist could really use a day off, been pretty brutal lately.

that "talent" was responsible for multiple runs crossing the plate
Upton took a bad route on Asdrubal Cabrera’s triple then stood like a statue on Buck’s single up the middle allowing Choo to run to 3B from where he eventually scored. Zobrist…..well to painful to bring up again. Let Ruggiano play LF tomorrow, Fuld in CF, Brignac at SS and Rodriquez at 2B or let Lopez play 2B and Rodriquez at SS.

LOL. I hope so cause that means WS rings for the Rays
I’m just as impressed by the improvement in his fielding the past year. All I’ve been hearing is how the Rays need to move him from SS to another position. 43 errors in 2009, 25 in 2010 and 6 in 45 games this year (a little more than a 1/3 through the season) so at least error rate wise he is holding his own. May not be the most swift guy at the position unlike Lee but if he can hit with a little power I’ll take it. I would like to see better base running from Tim.
Speaking of Lee although he is raking he has 11 errors in 37 games which is a concern but has lots of time to improve.
I wouldn't be too concerned with Lee
I’ve heard he has great range and some of his errors may be due to him reaching balls most wouldn’t and the error resulting on him extending to force the play, where most SS it would have been a hit. Remember Brignac had a ton of errors when he was in the low minors too.
The Longo base running screwup in the 9th was the worst I've seen all year.
not that it cost them the game (Zi tiij care if that), but what the fuck was he thinking?
YOU SEE IT'S THE FAN'S FAULT WHY THE GAME ENDED!!
“It was a weird sequence of events,” Longoria said. “When the ball was hit behind me, when I heard the crowd cheer, I thought [the ball] went down the line. It’s just a bad baserunning mistake on my part. But that’s what I was going off of. … When I looked up, the third baseman, in my vision, was kind of standing in front of Rodriguez, so I saw [third base coach Tom] Foley and he was pointing to third base and so I thought he was talking to me instead of Rodriguez. But that can’t really happen. It’s a bad baserunning mistake.”
STOP THIS CHEERING STUFF. SIT ON YOUR HANDS OR READ JONAH’S BOOK, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF THE RAYS STOP CHEERING!! YOU’RE CONFUSING THE PLAYERS!!
Frig off

i was in section 207 looking straight at Longo, he had his head down and when was the
last time you heard a player basing his actions on the crowd’s reaction??
Face it Longo, you forgot there was a runner (SRod) on 2nd. A real mental screw up.
He did face it
“It’s just a bad baserunning mistake on my part.”
He admitted his mistake, that should be all that’s made of the incident.

Agree.
Rays seem to find a way to lose this year. I cannot understand how Rays keep losing series at home. With Joyce, Shields, and Kotchman having career years up to this point, you would expect better. My concern is when those three regress, Rays may be way out of contention.
Bad games happen.
Early game today, I’m sure the Rays will be right back on it. Shame about the error but it’s one game guys. Chins up!

2 lefties start off the Rangers series in Holland and Wilson
I'm not a fanboy, I'm a _______
A good team knocks Carrasco OUT in the 4th inning
Upton and Fuld swing at ball 4, and Shoppach needs to go and the sooner the better
As BA pointed out when Carrasco turned and bluffed a throw to 2B with Kotch basically standing on the bag, he was scared to pitch, which has always been the MO on Carrasco, gutless with runners on base

Carrasco has a 1.4 G/F rate this year
Rays splits vs pitchers
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=TBR&year=2011#gbfb
groundball pitchers and lefties are terrible matchups for the Rays; Carrasco is one of those, Masterson could do it today, and then back to back lefties to start the Rangers series.
For whatever reason, this team stinks against groundball pitchers so Carrasco having success should not have been a surprise.

exactly what type of pitcher do the Rays mash against?
LH batters had over a 300 BA v him, yet we somehow found a way to keep him in control
BJ Upton is awful and for the few weeks of brilliance he gives yearly v the months of frustration, i for one will be happy when he leaves for good

Plus 2 singles and a hit batter isn’t 3 home runs. The error certainly didn’t help.

It's a valid point and you weren't alone on it, I have no idea why Joe ran him out for a second inning in his second appearance
I think there’s some animosity there. It’s just an idea, but I think they were worried about J.P.‘s shoulder after 2009 and wanted him to get it checked out. J.P. went with rest over the offseason while drastically altering his routine which really pissed off Maddon. At this point, they’re going to make him earn his spot back I just wish they ease him back in

I guess it's just time to face facts that the Rays aren't a good team. Hasn't that been your point for weeks now. When they start playing better, as a team, I hope you point out when they were able to knock a pitcher out
like with Coke in the Detroit series, Buente in the Marlins series, or heck even Verlander got roughed up by us. The outcomes aren’t desirable at the moment, but it’s not like the entire team is playing awful. The margins are just so slim in this new low-scoring MLB that one error or one DP with runners on can be the deciding factor. Truly, I love it as the games are tight and white-knuckle, but lunatics like yourself have to like it even more since there will always be something to complain about.

and about the Phil Coke game? he was removed after 3.1 IP due to injury
He was perfect thru 3 IP and in the 4th we “chased” uim with 2 H and 1 R

Yes, it points out that even if we had chased Baby Carlos victory is far from assured
If you watched the Coke game he wasn’t pulled due to injury, he was starting to get rocked and Leyland needed time to get a reliever ready.
