Rays Beat The Orioles And Umpire Tim Welke, 7-5 In Extra Innings
The post comes to you plebeians courtesy of SBN Tampa Bay, destructor of misinformation.
The Tampa Bay Rays (34-30) managed to beat the Baltimore Orioles (30-32) in a late-inning affair on Saturday night, coming up big in the top of the 9th and 11th innings.
David Price pitched well, but proved to be no match for home plate umpire Tim Welke. Though Price pitched 6 innings, allowing 4 runs, his real obstacle was deciphering Welke's zone, which took form of a wobbly ghost:
Welke's zone stung worst in 6th inning, when David Price threw three straight balls to Mark Reynolds, who homered then on the 3-0 fastball. Further inspection, however, reveals the offending 3-0 count was dubious if not criminal:
Reynolds's 6th inning homer -- his second homer of the night -- gave the Orioles their first lead of the evening. The Rays promptly tied the game on a Casey Kotchman RBI infield ground ball single/error combo. The tied game did not last long, as Joel Peralta hit trouble quick in the bottom of the 8th. Allowing two hits and then two consecutive walks, Peralta walked in the leading run for the Orioles, giving them a 5-4 lead going into the 9th.
Then, in a stroke of both luck and magic, Ben Zobrist hit a one-out triple off Felix Pie's glove, and Casey Kotchman slashed an line-drive RBI single into right center field.
With the game tied, the Rays relief duo of Cesar Ramos (1.1 IP) and Juan Cruz (0.2 IP, W 4-0) made the extra innings look easy. In the top of the 11th, Ben Zobrist again sparked the Rays offense, hitting a lead-off double, coming home on Evan Longoria's RBI single. Casey Kotchman then lazered yet another hit, an RBI double this time, into right center field, giving the Rays a 2-run advantage.
Kyle Farnsworth then collected his 14th save, several times making the Orioles hitters look like emo high schoolers, as is Farnsworth's way.
Notes from the game:
- Justin Ruggiano made a near-Bugs-Bunny-climbing-the-Statue-of-Liberty catch, robbing J.J. Hardy from a 7th inning home run and starting a 1-2-3 inning for a much appreciative J.P. Howell.
- Matt Joyce, despite working some good at bats and taking a walk, went 0 for 5. The hitters around him, however, went crazy. Johnny Damon, Ben Zobrist, Evan Longoria, and Casey Kotchman put together a 13 for 23 night -- good for 6 doubles, 1 triple, and a walk from Longo.
- The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees both won today, meaning the Rays remain 4.0 games out of first place and 2.0 games behind the 2nd-place Yankees.

I know this is OT, but just saw Re-Alignment mentioned on the 4 letter network.
15 teams each league, 5 best make playoffs.
This was dealt with in whatever thread this morning I turned into a mini ottotd

this was the first thread that i read as i was gone all day
and had just seen it on bbtn
While I am not so sure Howell is looking too good yet, despite his line
I know that the other JP in the pen is looking very bad. Maybe his arm is tired and maybe that’s because he keeps working long innings. The guys strength is his command, it’s why he pitches the 8th, well walking his 11th and 12th guys, 12th being walking in a run, well, I am not impressed.
The other guys look strong. Juan Cruz has had better command which makes him really tough to hit, Farnsworth has closed out games as calm if not calmer as Soriano did. Sometimes Ramos will throw 1 bad pitch but his outings in general are usually very good. Adam Russell is the low leverage guy and he has looked much better too, I think all the work he gets when the game isn’t in his hands is giving him the confidence to go into high leverage situations eventually. Andy Sonnanstine….
Under construction
anyone have any information on Oscar Hernandez in the VSL? Dude is raking .421/.506/.908 with 11 HR in 76 AB. Kid is 17 years old and that is some video game numbers right there.
I think he has more home runs
than any team in that league. He also has just 12 Ks (6 BBs).
Last year he hit .223/.319/.398 with 4 HRs, 11 BBs and 19 Ks as a 16-17 year old in the VSL.
Somebody else asked about him at raysprospects.
This was Doug’s response:
________________________________________________________________________
“Doug A. Milhoan said…
Nope. Even though he played for the VSL Rays last season he is not listed in the media guide. Which is odd, since many players who have yet to play in a professional game are listed. He hit #11 today, he’s been cooling off a little lately but is still hitting .421/.506/.908 over 76 ABs. That .906 isn’t his OPS, it’s his SLG, his OPS is 1.414."
__________________________________________________________________________
I saw you asked there too. This was on the podcast thread.
The OBP does not really mean much.
On most teams in the VSL, pitchers give up 5-10 BB/9 innings with a few exceptions. And many players have OBPs in the .400-.500+ range. But the next most home runs in that league is 3 (I think) and only a couple of players have that. Hernandez does have more HRs than any other team total.
We have the technology
to help have a better game. I don’t blame price for getting pissed. I would not miss the umpires if a robot called balls and strikes. It is a tough job being an ump, and pitch f/x is making it tougher.
Kudos to Kotch for his 9th inning single
Took a called strike a mile wide. So many times when that happens we blame the umps, but when you hang in there and get a base hit you don’t need to. Well done Kotch.
Also great game Zo, and Peralta has been shaky to say the least out west.

Also glad to see Ruggiano stick around instead of Felipe particularly with 2 LHP in the next two days.

I thought Joe
did a great job putting on the shift in the late inning with Scott. He left Longo closer to third until 2 strikes. This stopped Scott from doing what Cust did out west. In the late innings the shift needs to be modified. Joe and his adjustments are leading the way.
After 40 extra-base hits last year, Zobrist aka the $17 million "Nick Green clone" has 33 extra-base hits in 63 games.

Welke was terrible giving the pitchers 6" on the outside corner v LH hitters
Point here is how a real hitter and Brignac face that challenge. Damon wasted that pitch foul, cause he knew Welke would ring him up, then singled. Brignac the genius he is takes the pitch for strike 3 and then argues with Welke. Brignac is a lost cause and as son as he’s gone the better

Possible flaw in WAR?
How is Zobrist higher then Granderson? It appears solely because of defense, but isnt UZR unreliable for 1 year sample sizes?
33 XBH also helps.

Ruggiano Credit
Have to say that I’ve been very pleased with his contribution since being recalled, especially this past week.
He has 5 starts this week alone and has responded with 8 hits (.421 average) including a double and a home run.
Wouldn’t mind seeing a little more of him. Since his recall he has hit .290/.353/.516 with 2 HR and 7 RBI all at a very reasonable .304 BABIP.
I'm ok with a 1-year deal with an option,
but other than that, no thanks. His track record is against him for a contract over 1 guaranteed year.
