Cobb Outdoes Haren; Rays Beat Angels, 4-1
You can find the original form of this recap and all Tampa Bay-related sports news at SBN Tampa Bay.
The Rays (32-29) continued their creep towards the top with their second straight win against the Los Angeles Angels (30-33). Alex Cobb (1-0) pitched exceptionally, twirling a fine 6 and 1/3 innings -- walking none and K'ing 3. The rookie certainly had a California-sized ob-stakle in his way, pairing off against Dan Haren (5-4), who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings of work. Tonight, the Rays became the 5th team to get more than 2 runs against Haren over his 13 starts in 2011. Tonight's victory was no small feet.
Johnny Damon started the game proper, hitting a lead-off triple and scoring four pitches later on a Ben Zobrist ground out. The Rays then loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning, only to have Dan Haren houdini his way out of it. B.J. Upton put the Rays up 2-0 with his 8th homer of the year in the 3rd. He is now on pace to hit ~20.5 homers this year. In the fourth, Damon slapped yet another extra-base hit, doubling on a ball straight-murdered towards center field, sending John Jaso across the plate.
Meanwhile, Alex Cobb's side of the game went so smoothly as to be almost boring -- until the 6th inning, when Howie Kendrick hit a ground rule double to right and Torii Hunter drove him home with a single. The Cobb-related thrills continued in the 7th, when Mark Trumbo led off with with a double to right-center, which slipped by B.J. Upton to allow Trumbo to trudge to third base.
After getting the shell of Vernon Wells to pop out, Cobb left in favor of J.P. Howell, who did his best J.P. Howell impersonation, making Maicer Izturis and Hank Conger look like beer-league softball players, sunburned and ready to go home and watch NASCAR. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Casey Kotchman spurred a hit-fest, skying a double to left and later scoring on a John Jaso single.
From there, the 1-2 combo of Joel Peralta and Kyle Farnsworth collectively said, "2010 was not a fluke," slamming the door so hard Torii Hunter may have gotten a nosebleed.
Notes from the game:
- It is still early to matter too much, but: The Rays have clambered back to within 2.5 games of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The Yanks and Sox are beating each other up this week, so wins mean gaining ground on either or both of them. That would be nice.
- Johnny Damon, Casey Kotchman (SF1/Landlord), and John Jaso had a great day today, going a combined 8 for 12 with a walk. Kotchman still seems to be suffering a little bit from the recent ankle injury, but he ran, hit, and fielded effectively tonight, which is a good sign. In fact he hit a foul homer off Haren at one point, albeit moments before he
struck outgrounded out to second base. - Kyle Farnsworth has walked only one batter all year long. It is just a shame the Rays could not find a proven closer like Rafael Soriano, Ryan Franklin, Matt Thornton, Joakim Soria, or Matt Capps (all relievers under-performing Farnstormer).
- Russ Canzler had a grand slam today, his 7th home run of the Triple-A season. Coming into action today (pre-salami, in other words), Canzler was sporting a .397 wOBA and playing some fine-to-acceptable defense at third base. Felipe Lopez better watch his back.

Great outing by Cobb
And it was really great to see JP to come in shut down the Angels in the 7th. He had really great stuff.

Maddon couldn't of been better with his timing tonight, it was amazing
Because he didn’t see the replay of how bad Alex Cobb missed his spot to Wells, he just saw the pop out. However, as soon as Cobb threw that pitch, Joe came right out and got him.
I think I know the secret to JP’s success by the way, he has looked much calmer on the mound this season and he has failed, tonight he went back to falling off the rubber to make a nasty curve and he got himself 2 k’s. And it was probably a very smart move to take JP out on that high note and give the 8th to the other JP. Farnsworth….hot damn
There is no contest of Cobb vs Sonny, a Cobb vs Davis contest would be closer. However, when it comes down to Cobb vs Neimann, the large dude is going to win. Sonnanstine is so useless, how does everyone feel about Cobb moving to the pen when Neimann returns?
Under construction
I'd rather have Davis to the pen
May be he can regain his velocity and breaking stuff there. But his long-term deal probably immunes him to such a move.
Our best option IMO would be to keep Cobb and Davis in the rotation
And see how Neimann does out of the pen. He blows up by the 6th and that’s when he’s on. He should pitch less innings.
As for Davis, last year he couldn’t pitch in June, I think it was May this year and he will be just fine. We should roll with Price – Shields – Hellickson – Davis – Cobb and that would be for a while because it might be our 5 best options until Moore is ready.
Under construction
How in the hell do you see Niemann as better than Cobb, but Cobb better than Davis?
Niemann is garbage always has been, always will be.

No, I haven't watched any baseball since last year.
I didn’t like the whole pitching philosophy he had earlier in the year but it seems like he’s starting to come around now pitching harder. I’ll be curious to see the results of his next 4-5 starts.

Damon and Kotch, hitting like the true pros they are
Let’s hope Matt Joyce can keep up with Kotch—you know those GB hitters are doomed so it shouldn’t be too difficult
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
This has happened kinda quietly
Of course, Joyce has the highest wOBA on the team over the past 30 days at .453, but minimum 40 PA, look who is 2nd place:
.327/.381/.452 with a .372 wOBA and nearly a 1:1 K/BB
Yep, Johnny Damon
It’s been so long since the club has had a productive DH I’ve almost forgotten what one looks like.
I'm not a fanboy, I'm a _______
Damon throughout his career has maintained a near BB% of 10 and
the low walk total was perplexing at the start of the season. That appears to be on the rise and thus so has the other totals
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
4% in April, 6% since
Still well off his pace from the last 5 years but he’s also making more contact this year than he has in the past. Yet, he’s not giving up the power as he’s just one HR shy of tying last year’s output and he’s on pace to equal his XBH production from last season – a season in which his open market production was nearly $9.5M.

I'm guessing the last two seasons his power and lack of it were dictated by the parks
(Yankee Stadium and Comerica) he played in
The cool thing about Damon he can adapt his swing to the park he’s playing at
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
sure...
Yankee Stadium definitely inflated his HR #’s
Trop & Comerica were practically equal last year in terms of HR park factors but Comerica loved doubles last year so for Damon to be on track to meet or exceed both of those totals says something.
That said, his swing is still the ugliest damn thing I’ve ever seen.

The haters of Kotch have ruined Rays baseball for many
It’s no longer the Rays v -————- it’s become the game within the game. What will Kotch do w/RISP? When will his GB turn into a DP? Every one of his ABs is put under a microscope. It’s sad really is
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
everyone is put under a microscope to look at the process and see what the success/problem is
Opinions and facts do not always come to a common ending point and of course there are always outliers. Again, again, and again, if we didn’t point out the potential pitfalls in a performance, we’d be doing everyone a disservice. In an unusual case such as Kotchman, it is going to get extra attention because of how unique it is for a slow-footed guy to suddenly get this amount of BIP fortune all at once despite very little change in his approach.

Dear Mr. Collete
Maybe it is your approach that needs changing. I think the approach that AF and a few others had on the signing of Kotchiro has worked out fine.
How is my approach different to any other writer here?
It’s the “home of progressive statistical analysis” — if you’re looking for us to just nod in approval at something like this without taking a deeper look into why it is likely very tough to sustain, I suggest you frequent other sites.

Read up on Freezo
His approach was much more logical than yours or RJ’s
I have
Kotchman still has a way to go before convincing most analysts that he is a league average hitter, though ZiPs projects him at a 745 OPS the rest of the way. His power is well-below average for the position, and while groundballs are less likely to go for extra bases, flyballs that don’t leave the yard are less likely to turn into hits. If Kotchman has a chance to be an average hitter, its likely with his current profile, because his already sub-standard power will only decline with age.
/blockquote>That bolded statement is essentially what all of us have said. Logic should be qualified by fact, not your opinion. RJ, FreeZo, myself, Sandy, and just about every sensible Rays blogger has presented an angle to the Magic of Kotchman; we’ll see where the end result is at season’s end.

Only because both sides to this refuse to let it go.
We can’t mention Kotchman at all in a game recap – positive or negative – without a giant subthread developing, even if it starts as mostly tongue-in-cheek. If people want it to stop, then just stop talking about it. I’d really like to be able to write a recap without having to worry about every word about Kotchman being dissected to death and analyzed for subtext.

He ranks 10th in WAR so far in the AL for 1B
Besides, this discussion is about what he will do moving forward, not what he has done.
If you want to get into the pace game he had 12 strikeouts in his first 119 at bats but already has 3 in his first 15 this month (as he’s seen AB vs LHP). If he gets to the same amount of ABs this month as he did last month, that’s 15 strikeouts for June which would be more than April + May.

Um
ST. PETERSBURG | The Rays have been collecting shortstops in the First-Year Player Draft, but their their No. 1 pick is playing hard to get.
So far they can’t even get pitcher Taylor Guerrieri, their top pick on Monday night, to return phone calls. The 18-year-old right-hander, who was drafted 24th overall Monday night, has a commitment to the University of South Carolina that he is taking very seriously.
“With a lot of these guys, it’s just going to be a matter of letting things settle down and we’ll get with them,” scouting director R.J. Harrison said. “I intend to go in there next week or so to meet with the family, really emphasize to them the importance of getting him out playing, and we’ll just go from there.”

Not to get chicken little but I’d really dislike our draft without Guerrieri. What if the reason he fell is that he told other teams he wouldn’t sign?

I was just wondering the same thing.
Perhaps the ’makeup" issues were blown out of proportion and it was a signability issue that caused his drop.

Serious question, why do teams take players that they know are going to college?
As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.
Depends on round/situation.
(Almost) every HSer has a college commit. Some are more serious about it than others. I think teams usually have a pretty good handle on who can be persuaded to deviate from the college route before the draft. But, obviously, things change.
Twitter: @mbleazy
They don't
They might take a flier on someone later in the draft hoping they can pry him away.
see Josh Bell falling to the 2nd rd
It depends when
First five rounds it;s because they think they can sign him. Later on it’s just in case something happens (ruled ineligible for college, family needs the money, etc)

But for some random 30th round HS pick
$1,000 signing bonus plus college paid for probably isn’t worth it. Four years of playing at college is longer than you’d last in the pros, most likely.

There are a lot of questions about this kid, actually. Rumors of character issue are the least of which. How, in 6 months, did he go from throwing 83-87 to 92-98???? His claim of “3 lb dumbells” is a joke.
Abandoning his high school to transfer to a better one for his senior year, in order to begin partying with the SC folks does not bode well either. We will have to pay him a hefty amount more than the slot demands, knowing the Rays they won’t cough up the cash. I’d be surprised if he signed. Refusing to even talk to the team yet is yet another flag.
I don’t like the way this is shaping up. He needs to pull his head out of his nethers, or try again in 4 years after college, where he will be tossing the dice with regards to production, injury etc.

Me
My post higher up was worded in a confusing way
If I was ranking them, I would have Davis > Cobb > Neimann > Sonny. I am a believer in WD40.
What I was trying to say is who the team would pick between the 2 guys and that is Wade Davis over Alex Cobb, Jeff Neimann over Alex Cobb and Alex Cobb over Andy Sonnanstine.
Now while I really think Wade will be much better the rest of the way, if I made the rotation right now, it would be…
David Price
James Shields
Jeremy Hellickson
Alex Cobb
Wade Davis
