Shields Throws Another Complete Game, Rays Fall to Yankees 1-0
It's pretty simple. James Shields was very good, but C.C Sabathia was just a touch better. The only advantage Sabathia had was that he did not make an errant throw on a pick off that allowed a run to score. They each allowed four hits and one walk, with Sabathia striking out nine to Shields' five. It was a fantastic game to watch if you love watching two of the best pitchers in the game executing their craft to perfection. If you're a fan of offense...not so much.
The Rays had a few chances to score, with Elliott Johnson and Sean Rodriguez hitting doubles. However, Longoria and Upton failed to drive in Johnson, and Rodriguez was caught trying to steal third for some reason. Those would be the only scoring opportunities the Rays would get. The Yankees didn't get many chances off Shields, either. They had two on and no out in the third, but had Curtis Granderson lay down a sac bunt for some reason. They took the bat out of their best hitter's hands and failed to score and runs that inning. It wouldn't be until the seventh inning that a run would score, and that would be all the Yankees needed.
After a single by Robinson Cano to lead off the inning, Jorge Posada popped out to shallow center. B.J. Upton caught the ball and had a very good chance to throw out Cano at first since Cano had stranded himself between first and second. Upton's throw, however, ended up in the Yankee dugout, allowing Cano to advance to third. Russell Martin grounded out to third, holding Cano on the bag. Shields, king of the pick-offs, had Cano dead to rights at third after he looked toward home instead of paying attention to the pitcher while he was taking his lead. Shields turned and made an errant throw to Sean Rodriguez, allowing Cano to waltz home.
It's unfortunate, because Shields really was terrific in throwing his seventh complete game of the year. He dominated the Yankees with first pitch strikes, throwing them to all but two batters. His curveball was on point, throwing it 24 times for 19 strikes; he used it to get many of those first pitch strikes. That allowed him to mix his fastball and changeup well, keeping the Yankees off balance. Shields' season is another good indicator as to why pitcher won/loss records are pretty much worthless. This game dropped him to 8-7 on the season, and likely lowered his place in the worst run support standings. He had the sixth worst support coming into today's game.
The road trip ends a disappointing 2-4. After the All-Star break the Rays return home to face the best team in baseball in the Boston Red Sox. Here's hoping that series goes better than this past one.

it's just one series
but with the deficit continuing to grow, it’s time to start thinking about whether to be sellers instead of buyers. Can the Rays, with the talent in house and what they can acquire via trade, compete with the Yankees and Red Sox this season? Or should they be focused on putting together the best 2012 team and beyond? It would be nice if both those options would blend together, but with each passing day, that’s looking less and less likely to happen.

how long before Price is arby eligible? He'll go the way of Garza, two years before free agency

from what i can tell he is arb1 after this year

i thought so-he has some kind of verbage in his deal to get there
not good for Rays, he’ll cost a fortuner for the next 4 years

Yup which is why i believe he is gone before or during the 2013 season
unless he signs a sweetheart of a hometown deal

why being a Rays fan is so tough--hell we can't even keep our players through arby

and with that in mind some clown on twitter suggests trading Shields at the deadline

exactly--when $7mil becomes too expensive for an ace type SP--better sell and buy
an Arena Football team

The 7M isn't the problem
It’s spending $$$ and not getting anywhere and losing him to FA.

If you are going to lose Price
better keep shields and hope Moore is a legit ace.
My thought is Price is homegrown and young so pony up the dough and stop being such cheap asses.
Price isn’t your average pitcher
Rays have TV deal coming in 2016 I believe
I can’t wait for that to happen so the Rays can afford to keep a homegrown player or two.

I don't mind selling high on Shieldsy
You will get a package similar or better than Garza. I don’t see this team competing this year anyway so sell Shields at his peak

This team is competing right now
I don’t see them winning it all though.

We will hang in there
by Dome Biscuit on Jul 10, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions
The Rays would need a package better than Garza one
3.5yrs vs 3yrs & cost controlled and he’s a better pitcher.
Don’t see anyone giving that to the Rays.

There was a mention in the GDT about the Rays going after Beltran...
..and it was shot down. But if the Rays determine they are going to make a run, and make a big move at the deadline, it is going to have to be a big bat. Beltran may be exactly what they need. On first glance, he does not fit the Rays financial profile…FA to be, cannnot be offered arbitration(meaning no draft picks), and still owed about 8 million for this year.
But the Mets will except a decent(not great prospect) if they eat half that salary. So, the Rays could get a proven run producer for the middle of their line-up for about 4 million and Sternberg has said they will increase payroll at the deadline if necessary. Adding Beltran puts a switch hitting RBI guy to bat behind Longoria. He could play DH on most days or play RF(where he has played all year) allowing Joyce to play LF(against righties) and let Damon DH on those days. Rays could keep Ruggs to play LF and his RH bat or Fuld if they want the extra speed and defens). They could eve Keep Guyer instead on those days.
It doesn’t preclude moving Upton(for a 1st baseman or catcher)at some point and bringing up Jennings or picking up another bullpen arm.
Rays would have a nice line-up of
Zobrist
Damon
Longoria
Beltran
Joyce
Kotchman
Upton
Jaso/Shoppach
SS..anyone?
And who do you think the Mets would want if they're going to eat half the salary?
Maddon's Mission
Make you want to kill him, then make you want to love him. Sly.
by Jonah Keri on Jun 19, 2010 10:31 PM EDT
For his full salary, they will take a bag of balls.
For 4 million, I would think maybe Torrez, Archer, Beckham, Mcgee, Barnese would be about right
One of those guys would not hurt the Rays system...
…and you have to overpay a little if you think one guy like Beltran can make the difference.
i thought you wanted to send all of those guys lol
by Peter Piontek on Jul 10, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions
not worth it for a team not really with a good chance
sit back and ask the moon for Beej and Shields. Sell them only if they bite.
Move Damon to open a spot for DJ then resign him next year.
Or move DJ/archer for pence.
are you saying one of them or all?
Because if you are saying all, you’re nuts. Beltran is only a rental. A half season. A couple months. So I’m going to assume you mean just one of them. And that’s not too bad. But still a high price to pay for a rental. I’d rather go for a Hunter Pence or someone under team control through next year.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 10, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I've stated it three time already..
One of the prospects I mentioned and some money in return for Beltran(up to 4 million)
Since the FO will not take on his full 8 million left to rent him, this is what it might take.
Pence is nice but he is in his arb years..
Owed 3 million for this season, probably will make 9-10 million next season and than still has one more arb. year after that. Under control for two seasons and will cost two high prospects. That is not the Rays MO or in their budget.
i think we've discussed this elsewhere
but it IS part of the Rays MO when it’s the right guy. The Rays were willing to consider this with Jason Bay. He’s a 3.5-4.5 WAR player. He’s under team control for 2 1/2 seasons. All-Star caliber player that hits both lefties and righties. Gotta give up something to get something.

why would the rays do this?
Really where is the benefit? He’s been hurt until now and the last thing they need is a bloated contract that maybe causes them to lose Price.
Beltran is not hurt and has been a very productive hitter.
Leads the NL in doubles(28), 13 HR’s , 386 w/OBA, 367 OBP
but he's had a history of injuries
and again the Rays chances of jumping into the race is slim. Plusd if they won’t upgrade DJ in the OF why would they trade for Beltran?
I don’t see how it makes sense.
His knee hasn't affected him for three months (played 88 games)and he could always DH
I think he could hold up for 3 months. Perfect SW hitting consistent bat to protect Longoria
you don't have to sway me on his ability
I just don’t see the FO going for him. Then again who knows what the hell they are doing.
Are you sure DJ is coming up?
Wily Aybar is out there. Might be a better option in the opinion of this FO
Absolutely zero chance of that happening
Beltran goes to the Sox/Yanks.
izzit possible
for Shields to get the CYA if he ends up with a W-L of (say?) 15-15?
great game if you like pitching. hard to swallow as a Rays fan.
OT: this MLS game in Portland is packed
More fans there to see soccer than at our home games
Upton is such an enigma
he’s hitting so well right now that he’s the type of guy you keep as a building block. But then he can be so poor that he’s an automatic out (usually after he watches a called strike 3 for the 10th time in 11 AB). But the last thing you want to see him do is reach that seemlingly limitless potential with someone else. But you don’t want to just watch him leave in FA with nothing to show for it.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 10, 2011 5:53 PM EDT reply actions
He's baffling but only 27
I’ve said this a bunch but I’d only trade him if you get someone like Ramos or Norris. I am not sure DJ is an upgrade in CF (and I’m not a Beej fan by any means)
I'd swing for the fences
Braves need a CF, and even if the Rays don’t need more pitching, Julio Teheran is enticing.

Upton is probably the best available position player @ the deadline

and NOT a rental
I think the Braves are a good fit, would love it if Cincy was a good fit (SS is a bigger need, not something we can help with). Texas would be a good fit for Farnsworth. Jurrickson Profar is the catch there. The problem is, Julio Teheran and Profar are great prospects, but do not fit Rays needs. Nonetheless, I think if they are offered in deals, you take them. Maybe Profar and Lee become the SS-2B duo of the future. Maybe you use one of them in a trade later.
But you go with the best available deal, regardless of need. And if Cincy offers Devin Mesoraco for someone like Farnsworth, then do it.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 10, 2011 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions
If asked about Teheran
We would get the same response teams got when they called about Hanson and then Heyward and I think they gave up on even trying for Freeman. Plus, the Braves fell back in love with Schafer. Giants have anyone left in that farm system? Torres has been awful for them and if there was ever a team in need of a bat, its the Giants.
Under construction
Brandon Belt?
I think I could live with that. ESPN has been reporting that Braves need CF, and one they can squeeze into their budget. Honestly, for a gold glove caliber CF that has RH pop for 25-30 HR, and is under reasonable cost control for season and a half? It’s going to cost something near Teheran or Belt, if they want the mid-season upgrade. Hell, it would cost Braves Jurrens or Beachy to get Carlos Quentin, according to reports.

I still don't understand trying to pick someone off third base when there are two outs already
If that play happens before the grounder the Roddy, I’m much more okay with it. But it’s a risky play, if only b/c it’s asking guys to do something they don’t do that often
wasn't Gardner up at the plate as well?

How about Guyer and Lee or Beckham for JJ Hardy?
Shortstop is a gapping hole offensively. Hardy is having a great year but if O’s willing to trade, could Rays keep him more than 3 months? I believe after Sox series we may be sellers rather than buyers and thus trade talk is a fantasy.
oh god no
Way too pricey for a rental the Rays do not need to re-sign

I just hope the Rays find a way to acquire some decent hitting
With the top-tier pitching they have, and with another stud on the way (Moore), a league average offense would be enough for post-season play.

Good god, Upton
I’m guessing he made that throw trying to make up for his other idiotic move of getting doubled up but why do you ever throw a ball like that? 2 Kotchman’s wouldn’t of been tall enough for that and he threw that harder than Aroldis Chapman can ever dream of. When he released that ball, did he actually think it would work out? I know the guy knows how to throw, he got Nunez earlier in the game. Then there is Shields, he was a master, another CG but there are 2 outs and S-Rod has been involved in exactly 0 of your 10 pick offs, just get the batter out. Why take that chance? To maybe save 2 pitches when the risk is losing the game?
That would of been like Price vs Sabathia last season when Reid Brignac, yes Brignac, hit a walkoff homer in the 10th to win 1-0. Shields and Sabathia would of been gone and while they had Garcia getting loose, we could of used Hellickson easily in extras.
Under construction
and by the way
I doubted we would keep Guyer around long but 1 game? And why must you have a semi serious injury AGAIN, Jennings? Ugh
Forget the minors, I still want my frustration taken away, I want Sonny DFA’d so there is no chance I ever see him on the mound again. Either Shoppach who actually can throw guys out but can’t hit or Jaso who can’t throw for shit but at least he makes contact more often. Maybe both should go and take Elliot and Ruggs with them.
Friedman, who knows where this team is going but I think it’s time to finally play for the future. Get Chirinos, Cobb, Guyer and McGee up here to stay, call up Jennings as soon as he is healthy and get rid of all these garbage players.
Under construction
How is it idiotic to get doubled up on a run & hit

His head was down, he never even tried to see where the ball was going, he was running to 3rd no matter what
And then he decides he must make up for it and makes the worst throw ever.
Under construction
His head wasnt down...
That’s why it is more frustrating… He looked up, saw it was hit, and continued to run. We see guys get doubled up on hit and run’s all the time… but it was a complete lack of effort to even try and get back.
