Lobaton to DL; Chirinos Called Up
It's already been mentioned in the threads, but a sprained left knee will end catcher Jose Lobaton's roster time and bring on the glorious new era of Robinson Chirinos.
Cheerios will likely play the Jaso game even though he's a righty, but may earn some more playing time if he starts mashing. In July, he had 4 homers and a .441 wOBA through 43 Pas.

Oh how nice it would be to see you and Chirinos split time and cut Shop already….
Under construction
I'd rather see an equipment bag
propped up behind the plate than Shoppach. At least I wouldn’t expect the bag to be much help. And the bag probably can block home plate better than Shoppach.
Well, hopefully Cheerio can show us more of how the Rays swindled the Cubs. Doesn’t seem the Bartlet trade has been as big a coup, but that’s probably magnified by Brignac’s struggles…
Bartlett sucks and Gomes is awesome
We’ll see what Ramos and Russell become but I love me some Gomes.
Chirinos should start tonight, Cobb is used to him.
Under construction
Ramos is alright
I dont like russell, but 1 pretty good reliever in gomes and a decent one in ramos for a crappy ss? thats called being friedman’d

Gomes from SD?
Forgot that. And Ramos…OK, so better than I was thinking.
And for as bad as Bartlett supposedly is, wouldn’t his average production eclipse what we have now?
not worth 5.5 mil, however
and marginal offensive upgrade wouldn’t be worth the defensive downgrade. 0.8 WAR for Barty so far, -0.7 for Brignac. 1.5 WAR differential between the 2. Neither one is the answer at SS.

Excited to see Chirinos
This was the guy the Rays coveted in the Garza deal. Coveted to the point that Texas, in trying to swing a trade for Garza as well, tried to work out a separate deal to get Chirinos so they could use him in a trade for Garza.

Not trying to demean the performance, but I think in my own mind I'm going to put it on stilts because he threw at Scutaro as well as performing well
against both lefties and righties.

Stilts or not, no way Gomes isn't one of the best 6 relievers in the system.
he belongs here with or without last night but i think he convinced Joe Maddon that he belongs with the big club
by Peter Piontek on Jul 18, 2011 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Not because of last night
but just as the latest example. Still very much SSS, but not faring well against lefties. If he can get both out, and I’m too lazy to check his minor league splits, he’s shown he can go multiple innings, and has good peripherals. At worst he’s a solid middle reliever for cheap.

The key part of all these roster moves is that right now the Rays 40 man roster stands at 38.
An important number allowing them to acquire at least two players via trade without having to drop anyone else off the 40. That flexibility makes trading(adding and subtracting) much less complicated.
reports also have Nationals willing to move Storen
Would a Storen/Desmond, or Storen/Norris, or Storen/Cole deal be enough for Upton?
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 18, 2011 5:53 PM EDT reply actions
I can't see the Nats moving a 23 year old closer of their future.
And Desmond is not much of an upgrade over what the Rays have for their future SS already in their system. AF should be looking to fill needs that are missing if he moves Upton…catcher and 1st base(and are ML ready. I still ask for either Norris or Ramos AND Marrero or Morse. Rays would need to add an arm in the deal…Torres and Cobb being called up may be a good showcase for the Nats.
Nats high on Upton
the report is they are willing to listen to all relievers. I’m sure they’d prefer to move Clippard. But if they can get the CF they are targeting, they’d be willing to move Storen. IF they are, I can see Rays targeting him. Desmond seems just like Brignac, so doesn’t really make sense there. But a Storen/Cole or Storen/Norris if Rays are convinced on his long-term potential would both be great deals.

that's why the second piece has to be really good
rays get 3 seasons of Storen (trade him by arb3), and either 5-6 seasons of Norris or Cole. If we can get them to snort some crack, maybe we can find a way to pry Espinosa in a bigger deal. Niemann, Upton, Torres for Espinosa, and Storen?

Norris has a 3 year decline in OPS
and his BA is really, really low. Like Carlos Pena low. He walks well. Has definite power. But will that hole in his swing keep him from being able to hit up to his potential? He scares me.
If we could pry away Cole, along with Storen, I’d call it a coup. Rays could then slide Farnsworth into set-up role for next year, or trade him while his value is high.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 18, 2011 5:59 PM EDT reply actions
Norris is only 22 and is a very good defensive catcher.
His BA is low but he does have power, makes contact, and has a great eye(KO’s going down/BB’s going up leading to a great OBP). Should improve his overall hitting moving forward.
Norris is much better than the year he is having
